My baby is only 9 months. But my doctor was talking to me about when to switch him over. And he says it helps to do half formula and half milk and slowly get to all milk. He says it helps with the transition. Good luck!!

I don't really have time to read through all 1074 replies (I am sure you can relate)...but if no one else has suggested it, I always found pure Pear Juice helped. It has a better taste and color than Prune Juice, but the same result.

85% OF PEOPLE ARE ALLERGIC TO COWS MILK.  mOST OF THE TIME IT IS THE LACTOSE.  i WOULD GIVE HIM LACTOSE FREE MILK..SAME BENEFITS AS FAR AS NUTRITION IS CONCERNED JUST SHOULD NOT CONSTIPATE.  IF THAT DOES NOT WORK YOU COULD GIVE GOAT MILK.  hAS EVEN BETTER HEALTH BENEFITS AND WILL DEFINATELY NOT CONSTIPATE.

If your giving whole milk I would try The 2% instead I think it has less fat to digest.

I breast fed my son and he was terribly constipated and it hurt when he was able to pass stools. The best thing that worked for me was to exercise his bowel. When I was changing his nappy I would bend his legs and work them like he was on a bike (with a nappy under him just in case.) This might sound a bit strange but it really does work.

What else is in her diet? Does she eat a lot of fiber? Fruit? Veggies? Apples and bananas are the best. My children also used to have very loose stools if they had too much fruit juice. Maybe you could increase her juice? We always watered ours down, even when they were older. You could also just increase her water.

I have been there.I have had that problem with both of my girls. I tried more fruits, vegetables, water, prune juice and even used the suppositories for kids and still had problems. I met another mom that her girl also had issues and she was told by a gastroenterologist to use milk of magnesia!! Sounds weird to do that to such a little person but I did that with my daughter and she is good now, it got her thru until she ate better on her own. For a 14 month old try just 1 or 2 tsp a day and see how that goes. Let me know if this works for your little girl, good luck!!!

Any intake of calcium that is above and beyond what they need will cause constipation. So, if she has a multi-vitamin that has calcium in it she should only have maybe one more dairy product a day. Milk is good, obviously, but maybe you need to cut her down to 2% or so. Also, be careful about her eating cheese and yogurt, etc. I had to give my son a dose of Milk of Magnesia for almost a year before his bowel movements became normal again. Try it at night and she'll go in the morning, or at least should. You can flavor the regular MOM w/ chocolate syrup or they have cherry, I think. If she doesn't like that, they make a cinnamon and apple wafer (made by Metamusil). It's in a box, usually on the bottom shelf at the store, along w/ other laxative supplies. Don't give her anything else because it will cause cramping and cause her even more problems. These products will help soften the stool so she won't be so afraid to go. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Same problem with my daughter at 1 year. We moved her to Lactaid and it made all the difference. She doesn't react to Cheese, Ice Cream or anything else. It's a little more expensive, but has a longer shelf live. She's 22 months now, LOVEs her Ba BA and Lactaid is all she will drink.

She maybe lactose intolerent, it can cause constipation. Have her tested or put her onto soy and cut out dairy to see if it works...good luck

Milk intolerance and allergies cause a lot of problems for little ones. And there are two forms of milk problems. The most recognized is lactose intolerance, and the other is an allergy to the milk protein. With lactose problems Lactaid may help the problem and if is a protein allergy you should take your child all the way off.

Both my kids have had milk problems. I think you should remove milk and dairy from the diet for a few weeks, if the problem goes away, you know it was from dairy and then you can try Lactiad, if the problem returns it is probably a protein allergy and you can then try soy or rice milks. For my older boy he is 3 now and fine, for my 16 month old, he has had bowel problems since he started milk and is now taking no cow milk and the problems are clearing up. Good luck.

I did the same thing when my daughter was a baby. In fact I started giving my youngest daughter whole milk at the age of 3 weeks because of the projectile vomiting. Anyway I put a little bit of the light Kayro syrup in 2 of her bottles a day. I also went to WalGreens and got the liquid vitamins for infants (it is by the other natural vitims) and put a drop of that in one of her bottles each day. She did not have a problem one bit.

You may want to use a couple of tsp. of Karol syrup in with the milk. Or give her juice to drink, eating veggies may help as well.

My daughter is the same way and what I do is I put a little bit of Miralax in her bottle everyday. If I dont she has trouble pooping. She holds her ears and starts to cry. The Doctor said that the Miralax is fine for kids. It wont ruin the stomach or anything.

My 3 yr old was the same way. She always ate a lot of fruit and drank a ton of water, but despite that was constipated. There really is nothing worse that seeing your child that uncomfortable and not be able to help. Our dr told us to start her on Miralax when she was about 18 mths, maybe a little younger. It worked perfectly. She is still on it, but not as often. My dr says kids are usually able to go off it between 3 and 4 yr of age. It is not addicted, it is very gentle. Some kids are just prone to constipation regardless of what they're eating/drinking. Good luck!

Give her some prune juice, Do give her a lot at one time, try 2-3oz first.  If it doesn't work then add more.

My daughter is now 15 months old and from the time she was about 10 months old and started predominantly eating solid foods, she became very constipated. She would scream everytime she had to go and it broke my heart. Her doctor suggested watered down orange juice and to make sure she got plenty of fluids, and warm baths that helped some, but only if she had to go while in the water. Nothing worked really well until she told me about PlumSmart plum juice. You can buy it at the grocery store - it is very sweet and my daughter loves it. As long as I give her at least 1 to 2 cups a day she has not had any problems going for the past 6 weeks or so. Hope you find something that works for your little one!

I didn't figure out that I was lactose intolerant until I was 22 years old.  Every since eliminating dairy from my diet, I've learned that going number 2 isn't painful and doesn't take 20-30 minutes.  I was born in the late 70's, long before lactose intolerance was on the radar.  I encourage you to remove dairy - especially cow's milk - from your baby's diet.  In order to see any real results, you'll need to remove all dairy for a minimum of two weeks. If things improve, you'll know the culprit.

I nursed my 2 1/2 yr old for 13 months.  Even after I slowly transitioned to cow's milk he was always constipated!  I switched to soy and it made a huge difference.  Some types of soy even have fiber in them.  And lots of water too!

My daughter did the same thing (she was almost 2). She had to be on M.O.M. everyday (prescribed by her doctor); without her daily dose, she wouldn't poop. Now she is fine; I guess, she eventually grew out of it (she is now 6).

My son had this problem and the doctor recommended using mineral oil once a day.  He was four at the time and I just put one tablespoon of mineral oil into his juice.  This seemed to help.  My son is now 13 going on 14 and still has this trouble when he doesn't get enough fiber.  So now instead of mineral oil, he just eats more fiber like an apple a day.  You know what they say about an apple a day.

My daughter went through the same thing.  We really increased her fruits and veggies and any bread products are whole wheat/whole grain (i.e. nothing white).  We also try to limit cheese.  This really helps.  When she's supper stopped up prunes also work.  If she's crying while trying to go, we put her in a warm bath.  That can help sooth a sore bum.  Good luck!!

my daughter went through the exact same thing. Even adults have a hard time digesting milk or milk products. What I did for my daughter is monitored how much milk she was getting. She now mostly drinks soy milk and we haven't had any problems in over two years because we try really hard not to give it to her. by the way this is very common I have two girlfriends whose kids also had this problem.

I would suggest nothing other then SOY MILK if so mix water and soy toegther or cow and soy together no syrups or fruits or anything like that... no pumping of sugar to a little baby is ever good.

Try putting a little brown sugar in her milk this should help to loosen her up. The milk may not even be the problem, when my oldest was that age she wasn't pooping either it was because one time it hurt so she started holding it in because she was scared it was gonna hurt her. She wasn't constipated the doc said just backed up.

Also do not let anybody make u feel bad for putting your daughter on cows milk at 1. She is your daughter and it is your choice. My first son was 3 months old when I put him on cows milk. At 1 month he was goin thru 2 cans of Good Start Concentrate in 24 hours plus eating pablum in the morning and at night. I switched him to the Follow Up, by the time he was 2 months old he was goin thru 2 cans in 24 hours and eating pablum in the morning, fruits and veg at lunch and pablum at night so by three months I said this is it staight to homo, and he is nine years old today and feeling good.

Your her mom don't let anybody tell you how to raise her :)

our ped. recommends putting 1Tablesoon of prune juice in babys bottle as many times as needed.  Once a day usually does the trick for us.  It has really helped my little guy.  I am sure you could add it to a sippy cup too.  good luck.

Have you treid any raw milk products sometimes kids are sensitive to things in processed milk.  My children are allm on raw milk and my son had major issues on processed milk but is now doing awesom on the raw.  Also ask your Doc if she could be lactose intolerant and try her on Digestive Advantage.  We refused to use chemical means to induce pooping we use Acai juice which works for all of us a tablespoon or 2 a day and we feel so much better

Milk is not necessary if it's causing her problems. If she eats other sources of calcium all day( cheese, vegs, yogurt, etc.) she'll be fine. Apple or other juices diluted with water helps my kids.

We tried Karo Syrup and everything you can think of! Another mom suggested 1 teaspoon of milk of magnesia and a teapsoon of mineral oil which lubricates the poop and makes it more comfy for them to go!...just stared trying it but i am so hoping that it will be a winner!

I switched my son over before he was a year old... I breastfed til he was 8 months and then formula... when I was ready to start giving him cows milk I started mixing the formula & cows milk... at first 3/4 formula & 1/4 milk then about a week later went about half and half and then again about a week or two later switched it to 3/4 milk and 1/4 formula and then a week or two later he was on straight cows milk and we have never had a problem with him pooping... this way it is allowing her system to adjust slowly and get used to the cows milk... I hope this helps, my son is 22 months old and I know how heartbreaking it can be to hear your child in pain or discomfort... take care

Put 1/4 cup kondramil in her milk once a day. You can do it more if she needs it. As she gets better put less and less in. When my daughter was two she decided she didn't like to poop so she was not going to do it any more. She could go 5/6 days before she had no choice and by then her bm was so large that she was in pain. The Kondramil makes the bm looser so she had no choice but to go. It should work the same for your child.

Try goats milk. It's more nutrious than cow's milk and doesn't have all the hormones cow's milk has these days. It's also really easy on their stomach's. Also, make sure she is drinking lots of water and eatting her vegetables!

It seems your baby might have cow's milk allergy which can cause constipation. You can see your GP and see if you can try Neocate ( milk for cow's milk allergy kids).
