I collect Precious Moment pieces or Lenox pieces for my 18 month old daugther that are special for the year, they are beautiful and not too expensive.

My family also does the ornament idea. It's fun to pick out a new ornament each year with something the child is interested in that year. Always remember to put the child's name and date on it. We give each child their ornament on Thanksgiving Day that way they have it to decorate the current year's tree with. Since this has been done for all the kids on my side of the family, some of them are now 18 years old and have quite a collection. It's fun to look at them every year when we decorate and remember.

A really neat thing my friends mom did with them was each year they handmade a christmas ornament, obviously the first one was their handprint and then each year after that was a unique piece of art that they were so proud to pull out and hang on the tree every year. They would make them on christmas evening and hang then on the tree when they were done. It was really neat to see the progression of the pieces even up to when she started high school and got to completely create it on her own. A great project for when the christmas toys start fights or have to be taken away as punishment for hitting your little brother with it. (sound familier anyone?) Plus the bonus of this is it is very inexpensive! hope this helps!

oh, I've heard of some of my friends that saved one of their childs special shirts throughout there life and make a blanket for them....I think that is such a cool idea but nothing you could do for the now....definitely a long-term project :)

Well this doesn't come around only once a year but you can do it that way...I bought my newborn daughter Miranda a James Avery charm bracelet (small enough she could hook it and wear it as a toddler on special occassions but large enough that it fits her with room to grow still at 7. I don't by charms yearly, I add them on special occassions or achievements....she has a bootie for when she started walking, a puppy because she loves her grandma-ma's dog Duncan, a school house when she started Kindergarten, a girl with a little brother when Noah was born, etc...Just an idea

I think a Christmas ornament is nice b/c she can have her own collection as she gets older. My Mom started this when I was little, and when I had my first tree, I was able to have so many treasured ornaments from when I was young to when I became an adult. She's started the same for my daughter and I know she'll treasure them always!

I buy my kids Hallmark ornaments for Christmas every year. I pick one out that will remind them of something they did that year. My grandmother did that for us growing up. It was the only present I got to open on Christmas Eve and I still remember how exciting it was to see what she picked out. I remember a couple of years ago when she stopped. I was so upset I had to go buy one for myself.

I went to a Build-a-Bear shop in the mall and made my own teddy bear while I was pregnant with my son. Then, for his first birthday, I made him another one. They're all customized.. you get to choose the type of animal, their clothes, etc. They are kind of expensive, but I think they're worth it. I plan on getting one for my son every year for his birthday.

I just read an article about parents who do things like this. The one that sticks out to me was a family who buys Christmas ornaments for their kids, but they are things that mean something to that child for that particular year--like a favorite toy, food, vacation spot, etc. I am thinking of starting that for my kids.

A friend of mine has a blanket his mom made him of a shirt from each year of his life. It has the "My First T-shirt" to ball teams to his Senior year of high school.

My in-laws have bought my kids a special ornament every year, with the thought that when they leave home, they'll have their own all ready to go. You could pick kid-friendly ones the first few years (as in soft, non-breakable ones)....My kids love pulling them out and hanging them up on the tree or get a miniature tree for you child's room and add little things every year.

What about the teddy bears with the year on the foot? They come in many sizes so you don't have to have a room full of large teddy bears.
