I want to start potty training my 18 month old.

He is pulling his willy out the top of his nappy and weeing on the floor or himself, and he knows when he needs to go. He's too little for the toilet, but he seems to think the potty is just a funny looking seat, and I don't know how to encourage him in the right direction.

You start going without diapers/pull ups at night when you get up in the morning and he's awake and is dry regularly. That's a brain development issue, and length of time to learn it can take up to the teens.

Excellent! Shannon: I'm from Perth, Western Australia. Brandi: I'm regularly cleaning up wee and sometimes he poo paints, so I'm cleaning that up too, using jocks shouldnt be too far different. He definitely thinks potty is a toy. So you would put them in nappies or pull-ups or something still at night time to start with right? When do you start going to jocks or just pjs at night?

I had a similar problem with my little one and he played with his little potty chair more than anything. I finally decided to buy one of those small potty seats to go on the big toilet and a stool. He learned in no time and now we're doing the same thing with our daugter. I don't think 18 mos is too little if he's ready. Go for it! It's so nice to be diaper free. Oh! One more thing. I put my kids in underwear right away. Yes it's messy and a pain, but the sooner they learn the feel of underwear, the less likely they will be to want to wear a diaper anymore.

My aunty put a cork in the toilet so my cousin would aim for it and not wee on the floor - they don't flush - it worked great! I supposeI'll just have to try and work out what's fun to pee on when you're 1 and a half? :-)

I say go for it!! My son is 3 and he uses the training potty but won't use the big one. If your son already "knows" to go then maybe when he grabs himself, grab him and tell to pee in the pot! I put cherrios, any cereal and had Jack try to pee on them. Silly I know but it was fun to him and it encouraged him to use the potty. Good luck!

Yeah, I haven't really pushed him, but i do think it's time to be more accommodating. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into the step thing, real toilet might work better coz his daddy leaves the door open. I think that's how he knows to pull it out the top to wee.

Amy has a good idea. I would try that, but go with the flow, if he senses stress he may stop any progress made. Be patient and give lots of praise!

A step stool in front of the toilet might be the way to go. He does sound ready to try, and it would allow him to use the real toilet vs one he thinks of as a toy.

I put Cash's nappies backwards so can't take them off, occasionaly he manages anyway though. We've got a potty, we've had it for a while, he will sit on it while he's playing, but he doesn't seem to understand that wees go in there. When I say he knows, I can tell he knows because when he has nappy free time he'll grab his winky and whinge, or he'll say 'bubbies', which is what he calls nappies or bring me a nappy. But if I try to get him on the potty when he does it, he won'tsit on it and he'll hold it til I put a nappy on or I'll turn around for a second and he'll wee on the floor. He knows it doesn't go on the floor too, he'll grab a towel and mop it up and go 'oh no.' I just feel like I'm missing something that will give him the idea that's what the potty's for.

We are going through the same thing. My son takes off his diaper and pees on the floor. We are going to go out and get his own little potty. I would suggest the same as they are shorter so he can sit/stand to do his business. I think if they understand when they have to potty and you can understand too, you should try potty training (age makes no difference in my book) One thing to consider is pull ups just for accident proposes.
