If your baby says DaDa before MaMa, were you/will you be jealous?

With my first go round I was extremely jealous only because they were well over a year before saying MAMA but I got over it especially when my last baby was born and his first words were MAMA.  I really think you grow as you have more children and realize its just apart of their individual development and that regardless of which one they say first the bond they build with you and yours is one that is unique and unbreakable!!  I love my kids and I know they love me...no one can take that away...:D

I was told that usually your child WILL most likely say dada first rather than mama because it is just simply easier. I have known children who have said neither of the two first.

My 7 mo old daughter can say dada, but not mama yet.  I'm not jealous, I'm pretty ecstatic that she is learning to talk!

My little guy said Mama first. My husband wasn't jealous, but he was sad it wasn't Dada.

My little guy is 19 months and still only says dada. Drives me nuts, I want him to say mama :)

Well, my son's first "name" for anyone in the house was "Meow" for the cat. And I certainly didn't think he loved the cat more than the rest of us. lol!

I had also read that Dada is easier, so I expected it. It didn't bother me at all, though it did allow for some humor. "Sorry honey - you're going to have to change the poopy diaper... he distinctly asked for Dada." lol!

I don't think it should matter to you...don't mean to put a sad spin on this...but my daughter is 4 and doesnt speak at all...doctors feel she'll never talk...so at this point whether she says dada/mama or kiss my butt...I'd jump up for joy.,...soon enough you'd be wishing he/she was calling on his dada more...i have another child and my son calls me for everything...which of course i love!

I wouldn't feel badly about your baby saying DaDa first. It is easier for a baby to make the 'dada' sound over the 'mama' sound, so don't take it personally :) Just enjoy all of the cute little sounds they make at this age ;)

Haha No I won't be jealous. My first two said Dada first, I don't expect this one to be any different. In fact my oldest said about 10 words before Mama!

My son is only 3 months old. I don't think I would be jealous if he says dada before mama but I really would love it if he says mama before dada... I'm working on it though... everyday I'm spending a few minutes with him "teaching" him I'm his mama :-)

I wasn't jealous when she said "dada" as one of her first words. For the longest time, "dada" meant pretty much anything that she thought was cool, didn't matter if it was me, Daddy, that shiny thing on the floor, etc. I was just agog at her reaching one of the next milestones in her development.

No because dada is easier to say then mama, and most babies do say dada first.

No I wasn't jealous. It lasts only a short time and as they get older the name they will use the most is Mama. They one they will come to first is mama. They one they will tell their secrets to is Mama. There will be some days when you wish you could change your name to dada. :-)

Both my kids said mum first yeah for me but it drives my hubby mad because they take a while to say dad my youngest 9 months still won't say it and now she laughs at him when he tries to get her to say it. I think she thinks dad is a funny word. I am glad they said mum first but a 2am I sometimes wish they said dad. Just remember they love you no matter what they say first and lets face it if you say mum alot to them they will pick it up quicker.

MY SON ASID DADA, BEFORE MAMA, AND HIS DADA WAS A DEADBEAT WHO LEFT US!! IMAGINE HOW MAD I WAS.. LOL THEN I REALIZED IT WAS JUST EASIER FOR HIM, AND DIDN'T MEAN HE WANTED HIM OVER ME.

My daugther actually said mama and mom before dada. It's kinda funny really, if she's with someone she doesn't want to be with (oddly enough.. my mother in law...) she turns towards me and starts going "mama mama mama". The first time she called him "dada" was when he was changing her diaper a few weeks ago.

I was jealous. Mostly because I am/was a single mom and the baby's Sperm Donor was not it th picture and I was just positive that I being the main caregiver would of course be rewarded with mama before dada. I got involved with a wonderful man around the time language skills kind of began and of course he became dada and was rewarded with the moniker before I got my mama. Jealous Yes, unhappy No. I was just happy he was developing normally and that he was talking!! ;0)

I felt a little jealous. I mean after all your with your child everyday and everynight being the one who is there all the time and then they say dada. I think that its natural but they always end up saying mama and when that starts it never stops. lol

This is exactly how I feel =)

My son actually said MaMa first  but my daughter started saying DaDa a few weeks ago. At first it was just noise and now if Daddy leaves the room she actually gets upset and starts saying DaDa. MaMa is definitely harder to learn because you have to use your lips to say it and usually don't get that right away.

I'd love to say "no, not at all!" But yes, I'd secretly be a bit jealous. And I know what Courtney says is true about language acquisition, but I'd STILL be a little jealous (secretly of course ;-) )

not when she was babbling, but when she was clearly saying daddy and even kitty but not mama i was a little hurt. but it seemed like she wanted to perfect it before moving on to other words because she skipped mama and went straight to mummy!

not only is dada easier to say, but really how natural is it for you to talk about yourself and say mama all day long. Definatly not as easy as it is to natter on about daddy coming home later from work.

No the D sound in Da Da is easier for a baby to make than the M from Ma Ma has nothing to do with whom the child prefers they will probably call everyone even the household pet Da Da at first!

I took a linguistics class in college and learned that it is natural for a baby to make the dada sound before the mama sound. It was true with both my kids. If I didn't know that ahead of time, I may have been jealous, but I wasn't.
