I am thinking of opening a daycare in my home so that I can stay home with my LO. Just wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions to get started and if I need to be licensed? And if I do, how do I go about it? I live in Canada if that helps. Thanks!!

Melissa, it depends where you live and what the province law on how many kids your allowed to have, where I live I'm allowed 8 kids in my home. However they cannot all be babies, you can contact your local early education and they can tell you how many kids is the law and what age. For example I can have 2 babies 3 preschool, and 3 school age kids or this is what I have 3 babies/toddlers no preschool and I have openings for 5 school age. There a great book I read that help me understand what I needed to do to start up, its called "home child care: a caregiver's guide by Lee Dunster. It tells you how to safe proof your home to how to keep track of your receipts to working with parents a really good book.

I ran a home daycare for 32 years. I am recently retired. Please contact me and I will help you all that I can. My primary reason for doing home daycare was that I was always home for my own children. It also provided them with friendships that have lasted into their adulthood. For the children who came over the years it provided them with a whole new family setting and they benefited as well. I did the private daycare in my home. Christy in Connecticut

My name is Claire, I am 28 years old, and have been running a daycare from my home for nearly 9 years now. I have a 4 year old and 7 week old and couldn't imagine not being home with them.
When it comes to home daycare there are two options. You can be a private home daycare which means you find your own clients, do your own menus, outings, activities, etc and can have a maximum of 5 daycare children PLUS your own (as per the day nurseries act). If you go registered or licenced, the agency finds you daycare clients, gives menu and planning ideas, craft supplies, strollers, highchairs, playpens, etc for each of your children BUT you can only have 5 children total. This INCLUDES any of your own children that are under the age of 6.
So, you have to look at the pros and cons for each. Do you want your clients, materials and equipment provided and have 5 kids total or do you want to advertize and find your own clients, cover the cost of your supplies and equipment and have 5 daycare children plus your own?
If you have only one child of your own then I would suggest a registered daycare. I live in Ontario and have WeeWatch and Cherish in my area for licenced home daycares.
