in the hospital to induce they use a drip called pitt aka pitossin sp? to bring on contractions, the natural way to do this in nipple stimulation usong a breast pump. but it will only work if baby wants to come, sex is also good.

Ask to have a membrane sweep. these help a lot, and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, nipple stimulation. This worked wonders for me, especially once i was in labor. But it got me to 3 cm by the time I was 38 weeks. You can also try looking up accupressure in pregnancy on you tube. The only one I did was the ones on the feet, it doesn't help bring on ;abor but helps bring the baby down into the pelvis. Other than that, walking, sex, spicy foods. I've also heard that rasberry leaf tea works but I don't like tea so i never tried it. Good luck and congratulations!

Honestly, in most cases, there's a good reason why you're not dilating or going into labour. The baby probably does need to hang out in there for awhile longer.

That being said, I definitely wouldn't do the castor oil -- ick! But walking and pineapple juice definitely won't hurt you. And orgasms, even if they don't work, are certainly an entertaining way to pass the time while you're waiting!

Ask your midwife about accupressure, some are trained in it and I have a few friends who have done this and been in labour that day or the next.

Chinese Acupressure. There are points on a womans body above the ankle and side of the knee that natrually release chemicals into our bodies which pushes a woman into labor. A lot of prenatal massage therapists know which points on the body to avoid pressing too hard. =)

Castor oil is ok just take in moderation, and be ready to go to the hospital, I've had 6 kids and my last one I used castor oil, because she was getting big and wanted to get things moving along! It cleaned me out which was good because I always get constipated after birth, once labour started I only had 10 contraction and she was born! She was 10lbs home, water birth! I felt so good my husband went to bed I stayed up with the other 5 kids and fed them breakfast! I took 2 tbsp in juice and after a few hours it felt like things were slowing down I went to rest in bed and as soon as I closed my eyes t it started.

If this is your first baby, it may be a little tough...but as previous posters said sex and walking worked for me the first time, I was a full 40 though and I think I had my membranes stripped. Talk to your doc about getting your membranes stripped as well, if you really want to try to get him/her to come while your hubby is home.

Do you have a midwife? Usually to induce they do an herb combo called 5W by nature's sunshine. Otherwise, what worked for me [i was almost at my due date and they were pressuring me to just plan a c section instead of vbac] and I drank Red Raspberry LEAF tea like it was the only beverage out there. Make sure and try and relax. Oxytocin and calm are friends. The more nervous and anxious you get the more closed up your body's going to get.

please don't do the castor oil. I've only heard a couple times that it worked, but people said they were quite uncomfortably crapping themselves for a while before labor. Not my idea of a good time. ugh. but many have said it just made them spend time on the potty and didn't start a thing.

Most ideas for natural induction are based on old wives tales - which have some merit because they did work for someone. Personally, I think it's proabably coincidence more than fact, but who knows. As far as the castor oil is concerned, I have yet to find a credible doctor that advocates that; it causes the mother to become dehydrated and possibly tired at a time she needs to be neither. However, the sex thing is true. The suppository that is given to women is prostaglandin which is a major component of semen. If you want another wive's tale: try massaging the area right behind (toward your heel) the "bump" on your ankle. Massage therapists won't massage that area during pregnancy. I don't know if it works, but I never turn down a foot rub! Good luck!

With sex elevate your hips afterwards by putting a pillow under your bum for about 10-15 minutes. This allows the semen to sit on your cervix and let the hormones soften and ripen it up. To go into labor I had sex (LOTS of it!), walking, and I had an exercise ball that I would sit on and rotate my hips and bounce on. It helps shift the baby into a better position to drop into your pelvis. I've definitely heard fresh pineapple can help, canned stuff won't do it because the canning process kills the enzyme that is supposed to start labor. Also relax! Being stressed out won't help things along either.

Hmmm...I've never heard of the pineapple juice thing. Yeah, I agree with Kate...I think the baby is going to come when it's good & ready. It won't hurt you to TRY certain things like sex, spicy foods, etc...but definitely do NOT do the castor oil thing. It's not worth the risk. Hopefully everything will work out for you. Good luck.

I do agree though I dont think it is a good idea you would be exhausted when it came to the labour but it depends how it reacts with your body. The midwife told us the diarhea is over by the time you are delivering because the pressure of the babys head pushes everything out before hand

are you a midwife Kate? I think they could get in alot of trouble if they told someone wrong info and it harmed the baby. I wouldnt do it either however I did alot of research into it after being told to use it. For me its not really worth it the idea didnt appeal to me at all even to bring on the baby but for some it works great and they highly recommend it

No, it's not fine to use. It can be dangerous for mom and baby. Not to mention I, personally, don't think the idea of pooping until you finally go into labor is the best way to go about child birth.

ps saw other comments castor oil is not dangerous the midwives told me its fine to use , however I personally chose not to do it because of all the down sides the cramping not being able to tell if ytour in labour or in pain from castor oil and the risk of it not working at all

hi I had to be induced the hospital gave me lots of ideas to bring on before my induction date. None worked but they told me fresh pineapple (lots of it) sex, castor oil , laxatives (theres certain ones suggested to me to get but cant remember the name now) spicy food fast walking and most important take prim rose oil capsules 4 a day rasberry leaf tea every nigt with a cinimen stick theres so many others but Ive forgotten now.have you got a sweep done? Docs did my sweep at 39 weeks can you ask them to do it so its done right

Your body won't go into labor until it's good and ready regardless of what you do (this includes a hospital induction). You can try sex, walking, spicy foods, pineapple juice...DO NOT DO CASTOR OIL!!! It's dangerous for you and the baby: you could become severely dehydrated and over tired from the constant diarrhea and the baby could pass meconium in the amniotic fluid from the stress.
