I introduced solids to my exclusively breastfed baby a couple weeks ago and her bowel movements have changed tremendously. She got constipated last week after she tried sweet potatoes of all things. It makes me nervous about what I give her. If I am making baby food at home, what can I do so she doesn't get plugged up?

I used to add in a drop or two of flax oil as all solids made one of mine constipated.  Are you still nursing?

Hi there!

I experienced the same with my children. I avoided sweet potatoes for a couple of weeks and rather gave butternut, or apple. To ease constipation I gave cooked pureed pears. When giving sweet potatoes, thin it with water, or mix with a fruit, as it is a very dense puree. Hope she feels more comfortable!

you can try giving her some diluted apple juice (50/50 baby apple juice with water).  check with your pediatrician for the amount they'd recommend, but it usually is no more than 4 oz a day.  that's been working for my daughter.  stool consistency & frequency will change once solids are started, but as long as she is going every 2 days or so & her stools aren't hard & pellet-like, she's ok.
