Is it normal not to chew at almost a year old?

My son will be 1 next week, he has eight teeth and was weaned at 4 months old. He loves his food and will eat almost anything however he does not chew his food. When he has food with little lumps in it he just swallows it. I we give him food that he needs to bite and chew he moves it around his mouth then spits it out. He can it things like a whole banana as it is mushy.

Is he just slow and how long do you give him?

i liked reading all the posts since my daughter who is 2 years and 4 months just wont chew her food she just swallows everything...and i think its because of me...coz i dont chew my food properly...only if its bread or if i conciously make an effort to chew do i chew other wise i just gobble my meal to just get over with it...i think its some thing to do woth not liking food. and its just some thing that we have to finish!...my younger daughter has only 8 teeth and she chews food very nicely with her gums...and loves to eat...so i think its partly heriditry not to chew food or just not a great eater?

It could be a texture issue. I have a friend whose son cannot eat rice because he doesn't like the way it feels on his tongue. A little at a time and he should get used to it :)

My daughter won't eat anything that has been in the freezer longer than two days. It drives me nuts, but ..... preparing two dinners every few nights may be the only thing that gets me into heaven!

My son is now 14 months old and has finally gotten the hang of chewing... I think it was around one when he finally could eat a dry cookie without choking. But even now, he still isn't eating everything. He can't chew meat unless it's really tiny pieces. But he doesn't really eat our food yet. He has weetbix for breakfast, yoghurt (SOMETIMES a sandwich) for lunch, and mashed/pureed vegies for dinner.
I think they'll learn at their own pace, just don't give up trying. My son had a full mouth of teeth and wasn't chewing while his little friend who was the same age was eating everything with NO teeth! But Jamie hasn't been overly interested in our food, so he's not WANTING to try new foods all the time either. But I just persevered and all of a sudden he was chewing some things! It was a great victory for me!
Just keep it up and he'll learn in his own time :)

My son is almost two and will still swallow his food with-out chewing if at all possible! I put it down to laziness! I managed to get him to chew some foods by feeding him healthy slop then a small piece of biscuit or a few shreddies with cold milk. He still won't eat meat or chewy fish but other than that he eats normally. Don't panic he'll get it soon i'm sure hope this helps you.
