Is it possible for docs to get pregnancy dates wrong?

I am really curious to see if other mums have been giving a wrong date for their birth. I was told I was due in June of 08. I asked for a rescan and then told end of July begin of Aug. (She was a big baby) When I got my 20 week scan I was told she was measuring 2 weeks under her due date, which meant I wasnt due till end of Aug. She was born on 17th Aug weighing in at just under 9lbs. Her skin was all peeling and had that "over cooked" look. My midwife said she was over due by over a week or so. It turned out that the dates I calculated were more acurate than the doctors. I do know that the doctors give 2 week gap, just incase. I do know Im never going to the scan office again. lol. Has anyone else had this problem?

Quoting Krista:

The first scan is generally the most accurate. However, going from your LMP is the best way to figure out your due date.
A scan goes by the size of the uterus.....which generally measures the same as your weeks. That meaning that if you're 7 weeks, your uterus is 7 cm.
And a due date is never a guarantee, but an approximation.

That might explain a bit. I have a tilted uterus. Its sits back a bit further than normal. Maybe they never picked up on it last time round. :)

yes they are wrong more then right. they go by the size of the fetus. I was given dates with my first that just werent possible. Had only just got together with my bf after the dates they gave me. They insisted they were right. I gave birth at 39 weeks and our daughter had the pasty stuff on her that happens when a baby is more then 2 weeks prem.

SO this time around I made sure I always wrote down the dates of my period in my phone and the day after I was due I did a test so I knew exactly how far before the ultrasound. Generally if you find later on about your pregnancy they are less accurate with thier dates. every baby grows at different rates some are born big and some small

I'm not sure if it's true but, I heard doctors have a hard time with the date if you don't get an ultra sound before 12 wks. It could be utter BS though.

my due dateS (yes capital S) changed several times. Due to my irregular cycle we were all stymied. So they made their best guess based on his U/S size.

The dates changed by days to weeks, back & forth. At some point the date just kept getting projected further & further out.

Unless you were using ovulation tests and charting your temperature and all that stuff you could be more accurate than the doctor. You know when you had your last period, you know when you had sex so giving those dates accurately are important but you are right they do add the 2 weeks which I don't understand why they do that either. My kids were both born at 38 weeks and one was 8 lbs 6 oz and one was 11 lbs. can you say big baby? So think they were obviously 2 weeks off both times.
