is skype a good idea?

I forgot to add that my daughter is now 15 months old and when she sees the laptop she wants to talk to "Ganny" or "nana". She can still only focus on them for really short stretches of time, but it does keep a relationship going and helps her to remember them.

Skype is AWESOME!! My husband is in the military and we our stationed 5000 miles away from our families.. Without it my kids would never know their grandparents and when my hubby deploys they will still be able to see and talk to daddy. When we first moved my oldest would get upset when we skyped with my mom because she wanted to touch her but over time she has gotten use to it and loves it! I had my youngest while over here and without it she would not no my mom at all! When we get the computer out she gets so excited to see grandma, she is 12 months now and just NOW starting to understand it so at 3.5 months is still young but keep at it because when my youngest was 10 months old we went back home and the only person she would let hold her was my mom because of skype.. Skyping with him will keep him fresh in her mind so the next time you will see him she will know who he is..

I am of the view that to keep a relationship with her dad going she needs to use skype. Buy a teddy and wrap it up and then he can tell her to go and find it and when she speaks to daddy she can hold the teddy for a cuddle. This will give her some physical contact when talking to dad. Skype is great to maintain a relationship. Get him to read her a story and get involved as much as he can. My son is at uni and we have the lap top sat on the table and we all play games together it is such a laugh and helps my son feel a part of the family.

Skype is great, my husband and i communicate with our parents through skype. His parent are in France and mine are in Australia. When my daughter was a baby she didn't understand it and just got fussy but as she got older around a year old she got excited everytime she heard the call tone on skype because she knew grandma and grandpa were going to talk to her and she starts jumping once she sees them on the screen LOL she is 2 years old now and she loves skype as much as we do :)

I agree with Amber, continue with skype, we have been skyping with grandparents since my daughter was born. Our parents are in South Africa and New Zealand as well as on the other side of the U.S. so she gets to talk to and chat with them at least weekly. When she and I went to South Africa when she was 9 months old she was able to look at and hear her daddy online, it was great. Even if your daughter only stays quiet for a little while she will be interacting with him and it will get easier, don't expect much at first, just cuddle her or feed her - do whatever it is you would normally do with her to quiet her down.

My son is older(4), but we love Skype. His dad is active duty Army for the next year and being able to see and hear him helps.

Your daughter probably gets a little cranky because she's still an infant; it's what they do. I personally think that it will be more beneficial for your daughter to continue hearing her fathers voice and as she gets older to see his image. I don't know how long you will be apart, but it will allow them to continue to bond as she grows. And she will remember his voice and know his face.
