Is spray butter safe for my toddler?

I've heard that its better to give my toddler regular margarine but others say its ok to use the popular spray butters. What do you think?

Again... ditto Sherri. I was raised on margarine and can not stand the taste of butter. My friend only has butter, so... I never eat toast at her house. ;)

I have never had it ever even as a child so having it later on in life I just do not care for the taste of it what so ever.

Yea, I don't understand how butter can taste nasty...unless it's spoiled? But, I guess it's a personal choice.

However, I don't feed margarine to my kids. Kids NEED fat for healthy brain and eye growth. Fat DOES NOT make you fat: sugar DOES. Having fats in your diet is GOOD for you! It makes your hair shiny, your skin glow, and it triggers an "I'm full" reflex that carbs just can't. Don't skimp on fats in a kid's diet.

Based on the average American diet when you say on toast or in baking that adds up to much more than once in a while.

I seriously cannot conceive of butter being nasty tasting.

But anyways, to the OP why not coconut oil? Why does it have to be something full of manufactured chemicals? It's like rubbing your hand lotion on corn on the cob.

The spray butter is great for corn on the cob in the summer that is all I have ever used it for.

Because butter is NASTY tasting Lisa. Also if you only use margarine once in a while since the only thing we use it for is baking or toast. I am not concerned especially since I was brought up on margarine my whole life. I make up for it otherwise by eating well.

Just read posts and looked it up and there is no such thing as low fat low cal butter it isn't butter... And I wouldnt hive it to my kids....the propelsnt in the aerosol would put me off, when I bought a new (expensive) saucepan I was told not to use cooking sprays in if as the propellant sticks to the coating and damages the pan, if it wrecks a saucepan im note going to eat it....
Do you just spray it on the bread???? If so that seems pretty weird..

God no. Margarine, spray margarine, whatever the heck it it's called, is chemical crap that will send your daughter down the long road to heart disease. Run away.



Grass-fed real butter or coconut oil are your best bets for fats.



then again I guess there are much worse things I could give my son, right?

Never said margarine was butter Kate. Just saying if you use margarine in your house it is no different than using the spray.

Since we personally hate the taste of butter in this house we only use margarine my kids don't know anything else.

Paula, turn the bottle around and read the ingredients list. If it doesn't say "cream" don't give it to him.

Polysorbate 60



What is it?

Polysorbate 20 and the other Polysorbate ingredients (Polysorbate 21, Polysorbate 40, Polysorbate 60, Polysorbate 61, Polysorbate 65, Polysorbate 65, Polysorbate 80, Polysorbate 81, Polysorbate 85) are a series of general purpose hydrophilic, nonionic surfactants. Ingredients:

Nah it sounds fine (now I understand more), a little on toast or whatever isn't going to harm him, if he was eating it from the bottle then yes there'd be an issue.

Lol, this is getting funnier...The spray butter I use is fat free/low cal and it tastes very good...I had just heard it's not the best thing to give your kids too much fat free/low fat foods but then again I guess there are much worse things I could give my son, right?

Aerosol can is completely different than a pump mist. All it is, is melted butter. Not sure why a stick of butter is not disgusting but melted butter in a bottle is??

It doesn't come out of a spray can it comes in a bottle with a spray pump. It is not aerosol.

I'm in Australia so I've never seen it, let alone heard of it. Can I ask then, if it's that good why are you worried about giving it to your child?



Personally I don't believe anything that comes out of a spray can or tin can be all that healthy for you...

I wouldn't suggest any fake butters. The chemicals in it are often worse than the fats in regular butter.

Go with your gut...not a great idea. What about peanut butter toast? Is he over a year? Or honey on toast...once again if he is old enough, scrambled eggs, harboiled eggs, oatmeal, fruit, or just some dry cereal.

I'm just trying to find out some other ideas to give my son that are more healthful. I'm not a health nut by any means but I do try my best. Breakfast seems to be my struggle. He likes something for a while then pushes it away. Some have suggested giving him toast with butter and I'll I had was spray butter and wasn't sure if that was the best idea.

Margarine is actually terrible to eat. It is actually best just to have butter, just don't be excessive with it.

Well, real butter maybe? Maybe I am not understanding what products you are speaking about. Where I live we buy organic butter - from cows milk - and use that.

Having two family members battling cancer - and a friend, has made be very aware of these issue

Thanks for the reply JuLeah. I don't use it very often but the times I have it concerns me. Can you suggest any alternatives to put on dry whole wheat toast or pasta besides sugary jellies and creamy sauces?
