I have 2 kids now (4 and 2) and have never had a crib. It was a waste of space. We also co slept/co sleep, so there was never a need. Kids went into a (homemade) toddler bed at around 18mo and now (recently, since his sister has now taken over his bed :P) my son is in a full sized double bed.
If you co sleep and then intend on putting them in a toddler bed, there's no need for a crib. Only get one if you are actually intending on using it.

All 3 of mine was in a bed at a year but if you can't fit in a crib where are you going to put a bed?
You could co sleep if that's what works for you.

we co sleep and then she is going into a toddler bed once weaned. I don't worry about her being in a toddler bed since she already is used to a real bed.

a crib takes up less space than a twin bed.... and in some cases even a toddler bed.... I don't know what you are looking for that would be smaller than a crib... do you plan on leaving her ina bassinette?

at a year my daughter was in a toddler bed and by a year and a half we switched to a normal bed, only got the big bed because her brother needed a new one as his was really old and so we decided to purchase a bunk bed that could also be twins.

I picked up a crib for $10 on Craigslist...but we really never used it. When we moved, I didn't even bother setting it back up. When my boy was about 2, we needed baby gates. I started looking at the PRICES on that plastic junk...and decided to find a better way. My husband took the sides of the crib and mounted them to door jambs in my kitchen. They are now baby gates. We never really used a crib, I never had an instinct scream "OMG, HE HAS TO BE IN THE CRIB!"
