I had one for a year and a half. I experienced a lot of pain during sex, when my bladder was full, or it would just randomly ache. The wire tended to poke my husband, and I hated it. I just didn't want to have to worry about taking the pill. It was VERY convenient. I have a friend wo has it and loves it, the only "problem" is that she stopped getting her period.... but I wouldn't really call that a problem. Her boyfriend doesn't like the wires either.

I have one and I love it! I am terriable and remembering to take any pills and I am too old for Depo anymore. I love my children and do not think I am done having them yet however I am terriable fertile and since I have had it inserted I have had no issues. It was uncomfortable to put in and I had some mild cramping for a few days aterwards but other then that- no problems. I would reccomend this wholeheartedly!

I got one a few months ago, not for contraception, but because I needed something to help regulate the hormones and menstrual cycle. Before the Mirena I had horrible cramps and bleeding so severe I had to have blood transfusions twice. In less 3 months everything has gone down to very mild cramps and bleeding. I know a couple other women with the Mirena as well and they say that after a few months your period starts to taper off until it only last a day or two. There are no long term effects, when you are ready to get pregnant (if its before the 5 yrs) you just get it removed and you can be pregnant in less than two months.
While I've only been on the Mirena for a few months I completely love it already and tell all my friends they should get one if they want on birth control.

One thing that the packaging doesn't describe is that Mirena (and some BC pills) thin the uterine lining which is the backup method to prevent you from becoming pregnant (the thinning of the lining is mentioned, but what that does isn't). Basically, what this means, is that if the sperm and egg were to meet and create an embryo, the embryo cannot attach to the uteran wall and your body will abort the baby. Thought you might like to know, just in case that would bother you. I had one for a year before I found that out and had it taken out immediately. As for the pain, it hurt pretty bad for a few hours after it was put in, but then I didn't feel it again - which is more than I can say for my husband. There is a wirey string (VERY short) that remains outside of your uterus (so the doc can take it out) and that poked him more than once...

For the most part, I can say that it was the best way for me as far as a contraceptive. I really haven't had any issues with it and actually forget its there. It's convenient because you don't have to remember to take anything. As far as side effects...I have had some weight gain but don't know any birth control that doesn't play some factor in that!

I never heard of anything like the infection Tiffany went through with Mirena. I know a few moms (5) who have it and I am planning on getting one after I give birth, The effectivity is better that tube ligation after 5 years so I am going with it. The hormone is release locally ( in the uterus) so to me it is better than taking a pill and you don't have to think about it everyday. Finally if you want more kids, as soon as it is out you can start TTC. It is a perfect fit for me.

I thought it was a good idea, but mine perforated the uterus at placement and it was not discovered until over a year later when I decided I wanted it removed and it wasn't there. The one thing I can strongly recommend is having it checked about a month after placement to make sure it is where it is supposed to be.

I had used Mirena, and I liked the convience of it. However I did have a bad reaction with it. I had such severe cramps I was brought to the floor with tears streaming down my face. I would just double check with your doctor to make sure that he/she would recommend it for you. Good Luck
