What is the most durable, near unbreakable, type of crayon? i am sick and tired of finding little tiny pieces of wax around the house!!! I have heard good things about the Melissa and Doug triangle crayons.

Any suggestions?

I dont know of a durable or unbreakable crayon but I do have a wonderful way to reuse all of the broken crayons for the kids to use again! :) Take all of the broken crayons and make sure all of the paper is off of the crayons. Take a muffin pan and put in the paper muffin holders you use when you bake cupcakes. Take the crayon pieces and put them in the muffin holders either by all of the same color or mix and match and make multi-colored ones as well. Once you are done putting the broken crayon pieces in all of the muffin holders put the muffin pan in the over on 250 degreeas and keep an eye on them for 5-10 minutes until the crayon pieces are completely melted. Once the pieces are melted take the pan out of the over and let is cool. When they are cooled off you can pop them out and you have thick crayons in multi colors and shapes for the kids to use again and color with. Let me know how it works for you?

If you can't keep up with the mangled crayons and need a good deal - hit the school sales NOW! Crayola 24ct for 15cents - 25cents depending on your store and locations. I got the 64 ct for 1.64.

AND there are fun projects you can do with the mangled crayons too. My favorite is collecting leaves and flowers and pressing them between wax paper then added the broken crayons and melting them... even it doesn't turn out pretty its fun for them to see what happens.

Keep an eye out in the Target $1 section and they often have twistable crayons. Unfortunately, my daughter has figured out how to mangle them all!! Apparently, the repetition of mangling crayons is "investigation", but I still find it annoying. I've taken to keeping the crayons she get at restaurants!

HAHA I tried the twist crayons, my little stinker figured out how to get all the "lead" out...he is in his "I break stuff" stage. He's not allowed to touch much...Oh and now we do color wonder, he may think he's Picasso, but I think he needs to stop coloring on my damn wall...LOL Thank God there is Mr. Clean magic ;D

The twist crayons are nice, they didnt have them when mine were little. I always bought all different kinds of crayola crayons for them. The fat crayons are what I preferred and if they broke, usually in half, i would tape them back together. As they got older and kept breaking them or leaving them around to get broken I took them away completely. Gave them colored pencils which took longer to color and had to be sharpened all the time. I was ok with it but the girls really wanted their crayons back. They were given back with a talk about taking care of them and warned they would be taken away again. They were pretty good about it. I went through fewer crayons, messes, and whining! A combination of the both is nice if your child seems to be artistic. They can use the colored pencils for areas the crayons are just too big for.

All the other options, odd shapes, ball shaped and such I'm against. Even having your child use the over sized crayons for too long. As a teacher I have seen many children have problems holding pencils and controlling them properly.

Yes, but they are definitely a fall hazard. I got some good floor clearance the last time I stepped on one. I skidded clear across the living room floor (laminate flooring) and stubbed my toe on the coffee table. That crayon was swiftly delegated to the trash after a round of cursing and hobbling. :P

Why can't they invent a tube you drop a standard crayon in and you can twist it up and down? gawd that would be awesome!!!!

I got my son these crayons from Crayola. They are called mini twistables and they are wonderful, especailly when my youngeer daughters who are 2 and 3 try to color. And they are nice cause you don't need to sharpen them up you just twist them up or down when you are done with them.

I also have to recommend the twist crayons I just don't let my 2 year old see me twist it up so she doesn't know how to get more out if she does break it but they are really durable

Crayola makes a twist crayon that is like a self-sharpening eye pencil: plastic casing with a crayon inside. Works pretty well. My husband and I have both stepped on them and they haven't broken. :)

I've heard good things about the triangle crayons as well. For a cheaper solution our dollar store sells really thick crayons that the kids seem to have a hard time breaking.
