I have been fighting to get all the nits out of my 10 yr. old's hair. I can't see them all and the combs just slide right over them! Have spent days trying to get them out because her hair is sooo thick! I can't do it anymore! Is there anywhere I can take her to get some help getting them out?

I used baby oil - and a lot on my daughters hair (long blonde) when she had this problem. Use alon with a fine nit comb - and comb, comb, comb - you should get all and the eggs this way. I guess the oil smothers them. You will have to shampoo a couple times and still your child may look greasy for a day or two of washings - but it will get rid of them.

A friend of mine does a weekly vinegar soak with her 3 daughters. Soak the hair in white vinegar, wrap in plastic wrap (or a shower cap) and leave on for at least an hour. Wash and condition as usual, rinse well, and comb out. She tells me it works to kill any in the hair, and also as a deterrent. She said the vinegar will literally dissolve any nits or bugs present.

I have found, with my children, prevention is the best thing! All I do is take a regular spray bottle you can buy at any dollar store, fill it halfway with water, halfway with a leave-in treatment conditioner (just to help your hair, it does nothing for the nits) and a few drops of TEA TREE OIL (available at most department stores and Walmart, in the supplement section). There is something about the tea tree oil that lice don't like. We shake up the bottle, spray our hair every morning, then style it it. After about 3 weeks of using it every day, your hair is more resistant to head lice. You HAVE to do it every day, and keep it up; if you miss a day, you have to start all over again. We have done this for the past 5 years, and I have never had head lice since then, and my girls have only gotten them again when they quit using their spray.

treat with a shampoo (ask at the pharmacy which product is the current to use as the nits do develop resistance) then use conditioner, a really rich conditioner, the oil idea is the same idea it's not that it suffocates the nits but the hair becomes too slippery for them to cling on to. And of course the comb you need to comb and comb and comb. Once you have got rid of them you can make a mix of essentiel oils (lavender, geranium and tea tree) and put a drop on the nape of the neck once a week as prevention. I offer this advice as both mother and pharmacy tech who was responsable for keeping on track of anti nit campaigns in the uk. Good luck

We have been through this three times. The only thing you can do is be patient and diligently work on them. I usually ended up pulling them out with my fingernails. I think if you take her somewhere, they will probably want to cut her hair. It just takes time, and patience.

I dont think in general you can take kids anywhere to have people take the nits out for you, but i can give a quick fix solution :) Smother your childs hair, to the roots, in shampoo, or oil, doesnt matter which type of oil, then wrap their scalp in cling wrap for an hour or so. The oil smothers the nits so they cant breathe, and then they comb out with ease, and both the nits, and any eggs, will be dead. Just keep in mind you will also have to wash any toys they have played with while they had nits, if theyre fluffy, like teddy bears, and any bedding :)

Dont know where you are based, but here in australia you can get a special solution from any chemist/pharmacy including the special fine toothed comb But according to a morning show that I saw - you can use any conditioner. just load your child's hair with it and then use the fine toothed comb to slide out all the lice and nits. wipe them all on a paper towel or facial tissues - (make sure you kill all the moving ones) place in a sealed plastic bag-straight to the bin.

According to one of the mum's from my son's school, there's a mixture of lavander oil plus something else with water that she sprays on her child's hair everyday-and that it has kept the child from ever catching lice again. It was on the school newsletter, but i still have to find it. I'll post the actual formula when i find it.

you can buy various special combs!! I have one i think it's called nitty nora lol it has really long prongs, ideal for thick hair, and also has spirals round the prongs to make sure it gets all the lice and eggs! Wet her hair and comb through while wet it;s alot easier!! Also there is a comb that has a small electric pulse through it this kills the eggs and lice on contact! Obviuosly do that on dry hair and it wont hurt your daughter!! I think all these combs can be purchased off the internet so just google them! hope this helps i know how horrid it is when a child gets nits!! I've got 3 kids and they have all had them!!

Not sure, you can ask at your county health dept. Will the shampoo take care of any you miss? My son hasn't had it yet, but I remember being sent home from school and being treated when I was a kid. Those combs are awful!
