I had a Mirena IUD and the first few months it was GREAT!! After that I seemed to get a period that NEVER QUIT! I dealt with it for over a year thinking that maybe my body needed more time to adjust to it. It didnt get better, so my doctor suggested I take it out and try a different form of birth control. I ended up getting my tubes tied because my hubby and I decided we didnt want any more kids (we have 2 beautiful kids). This is just what happened to me. I have 3-4 friends that have Mirena and they haven't had any issues, and BARELY any periods!! Good Luck!

Hi! My sister and I both have the Mirena. The thing about an IUD is that it works differently for everyone. Some folks have side effects while others don't. I got mine in January and have had relatively no issues with the exception of wierd PMS and some constant aching (which is getting better). I talked to my doctor just this past Monday about it, and she told me that the copper version actually often causes increased cramping and heavier periods - though it is a highly effective BC method. A lot of women had an issue with the increased cramping/periods, so then the Mirena was born. It releases a very small amount of progesterone into the body which actually decreases cramping and periods (some folks get no period at all). However, the downside is that some women don't react well to the progesterone and they have increased PMS or moodiness. So it's really a toss-up as to what you are willing to deal with. It's really one of the best methods out there - especially because it is instantly reversable once it's removed. It was a very simple procedure getting it put in as well - just a little minor cramping/discomfort that was gone in seconds. The procedure took maybe a few minutes. Hope this was helpful!

I've had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years and I love it. No periods or side effects. It's good for people who have problems with high blood pressure because of the low dose of hormones.

I have had both. Currently, I have Mirena. Love it!!!! The copper one made me bleed for days & days until I was faint it was so bad. I mean it was so bad I had to double up overnight pads!!!! My period has basically disappeared except every couple of months I have spotting for a day or two and that's it. I've gained weight since I had them both put in over the course of 4 years but I'm not sure if it's from that or my affinity for treats. LOL

i have also had the depo but I didn't gain weight. I was lucky on that but then again I wasn't suppose to be on it. I have the mirena IUD. I love it. Both are long term birth control and you don't have to worry about do I remember to take the pill or anything in related to that. I have had mine for over a year now and had no problems with it. I did it due to the fact that we don't want no more children and my husband hasn't had the chance to get a vasectomy, due to being in the military and always being gone. Also don't hestitate to talk to your doctor about it in detail.

Yep, IUD's certainly work. I had one for two years, no babies! However, one month after having it removed, I got pregnant with twins!!!

I had a copper IUD... WARNING.. check your family medical history first! I got a bad infection, I was in a lot of pain and just miserable. Turns out I was allergic to certain metals. I thought I knew my family history and when I asked my mother about it, she told me she had the same problem. Just something she never mentioned to me. It worked fine and I had no problems at first. I guess over time with the metal being there it slowly turned into an infection. I hated having to go back to the pill after the ease of having an IUD but my circumstances just dont permit it. If it had gotten worse I could have lost the chance to have more children. As for the other IUD.. possibly no periods and possibly messing with hormones? Doesn't sound natural at all. I wouldn't want to mess with hormones or even periods since it is what God intended for us. Its sort of like a cleansing and I welcome it.

I got mirena and I love it. I have not had a period since getting it put in 3 months ago. had such minor cramping the first week and that is it. no other side effects.
I just love it. it was so quick to have put in and really didn't hurt at all. well worth every penny! I strongly recommend the mirena to every woman. Just make sure you research your doctor to make sure they have put many in, also ask how many have had to be removed ect. find a doctor with a high success rate and your good to go.

I had a copper one for 5 years. Heavier periods but not too terribly bad. Took it out when ready for baby #2 and was pregnant 6 days later. I'm done having kids and am fixed now or I'd have another. Paid $50 for the IUD, had it put in and was done thinking about birth control again.

I normally have heavy periods for the first couple days and then the are real light. I am not to worried about how heavy the periods are, I just really dont need to gain anymore weight. Has anyone that has had either had this problem. I am getting mine put in the 18th (if they dont cancel my appt again =( ) and I just really need some help deciding as to which one would work better. The pill and the depo shot (which have the release of the hormones) have made me gain weight before and I have heard that the mirena would probably do the same thing?? I dont know!!

I have the copper IUD fitted and have had no problem with it. I had one before my son was born and now have had another one put it. I haven't had my periods yet as my son is only 3 months old and Im breast feeding him but previously I had no period problems at all. There is no hormonal release so other than physically being in there it doesn't muck with your hormones it can stay in there for 10 years.

I have the copper one, have had it for 4.5 years now...love it, love it, love it! My period is only heavy for one day per month and then super-light (almost spotting) for the other 3 or 4. I thought the difference was that Mirena had the same chemicals (basically) as the pill, and that caused me to gain a lot of weight when I was on it...hope this helps :)

I've had the Mirena for almost 2 years now. I spotted alittle for the first 3 months of having it. Now I don't have a period at all and haven't since then. It is great!

I had the copper one for 9 years. I had regular but extremely heavy and long periods. I mean extremely heavy and lasted about 7-10 days. It got so bad I had it removed at the 9th year. As soon as I had it removed my periods are very light and last 4-5 days. I also had a little bit of difficulty in the removal as it had shifted up and the string was not where it was suppose to be. I have talked to people who have the mirena and are very pleased. I would recommend the one with the hormone over the plain copper. I hope this helps.

I have the Paraguard IUD and I like it a lot. Insertion was a breeze and I only have to check the strings 1x/month.

I also had the depo and gained weight, stopped it only becasue of the bone loss issue. I've had the mirena since may 09. I was told the copper pretty much stops the egg and the mirena stops it, keeps the uterus lining thin and is hormone balanced. (the hormones help with PMDD and lighter periods) Pretty much the copper is just to keep you from getting pregnant, the mirena helps with other things!

i to was on depo and because of bone loss stopped. I have the copper IUD and the only down side to it is I cramp the first day of my period.other than that I love it. I have had it for a year now.
