Only a couple of months after getting my Mirena IUD I went for a check-up and the doctor couldn't find the strings! I had to get an ultrasound to check to see if it was still in place. Luckily it was, but I still feel weird about it. Has this happened to anyone else? He also said I may have to get surgery to remove it when the time comes. It is a little scary, I want another child in a couple of years.

I have mirena, and I got so worried about it for a few weeks and sometimes I still do, but I think anytime you have something unnatural in your body you are bound to worry about it. It will be fine though!

I have had mine for 3 1/2 years now. I had the worst time when I got it placed, my uterus kept expelling it because my cervix did not want to close after having a nearly 10lb baby. We tried in the office three times, and when we thought it was placed properly I went home only to expel it there a few hours later. I finally went in and had it surgically placed, and they did a little house cleaning because I was still bleeding a lot from the baby(this was four months after he was born and I was still bleeding like he was a newborn). At my first follow-up appointment, we found out the strings were gone(poof, vanished), but after a quick ultrasound we found out that it was exactly were it is supposed to be, and the strings are coiled up in there with it. They did mention that I may have to go back in during day surgery to remove it, since it can barely be felt at the cervix, but I have no plans of having it removed in the near future.

I had an IUD once but it didn't get lost it got knocked out of place and I ended up pregnant and unfortunately I miscarried do to what happened with the IUD. I personally found it very uncomfortable and painful during intercourse and not only for me, but for my husband. I only had it in a short time before it was moved, and it is possible that the doctor who did it didn't put it in properly. It is a scary thing, I hope all goes well if you do need it surgically removed.

Hi, that also happened to me. He had to replace my IUD at that time because it had moved out of place somehow. Now I have no problem with mine. I plan on having another child in a year or so also. But first my twins need to get a little older....lol

I lost my string and went for an ultrasound they still couldnt find the string, went for an xray n found the IUD on the OUTSIDE of my uterus, it actually perforated my uterus, i had 2 go in for keyhole surgery 2 have it removed, ive since gone back in for day surgery 2 have a new one inserted (they r makin me go thru day surgery now as its the safest way for me now)...i dont understand y u need 2 have surgery if they found it on an ultrasound, they would only need 2 operate if the same thing happened to u like me...you'll b fine 2 have kids after my surgery im still able to have more kids if i choose 2..

I had that string vanish on me once- I freaked, then called for an appt. with my gyno., got checked out and she founf the string and pulled it out. I was nervouse to have that happen again, so I asked for it to be removed. I only had it in for about a year.

I got another IUD a year or so later and have had no problem with it for over 3 years...

No worries. Sometimes the string comes loose, sometimes it just gets pushed up. My doc couldn't find mine at one point. He got me all worried. Did an ultrasound, and saw it was there. The next visit, he was able to see it. I've had Mirena for 2 yrs, just had mine out. Well worth it. And if it does decide to come out, you'll notice. If/when they take it out, it's not that big of a deal. If the string is there and just pushed up, they just grab it and take it out (don't feel a thing). If the string isn't there, they can still take it out without too much of a deal. Sometimes they say surgery and not really mean the "under anesthetic, slice you open" surgery, but more the light sedation (to calm you) and a local anesthetic for pain.
Like I said, no worries. I've had it for 2 yrs and LOVED it!! I actually dislike not having it (since my periods were non-existant with it) but we're trying to get prego.

It happened to my friend. They told her she'll have to be put to sleep to get it out.
