For good information on what substances are actually safe, go to http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. I used this to find the companies Deep Steep and Giovanni, two of the safest skin care makers out there. Just because loads of companies use a substance, that doesn't make it safe. And a lot of these substances have been *known* to be unsafe for decades, but they kept using them because no one was calling them on it! Now that people are becoming more educated, consumers are voting with their money. There are scores of much safer baby product companies out there making millions because J&J is counting on consumers to be lulled into thinking they're safe.

I just want to make sure everyone knows that almost EVERY product in their home uses these chemicals. Problem with the internet there ends up trends of outrage to one company, without any real research people never find out that the very chemical use they are all outraged about is actually in almost everything they use daily. Baby or not. BTW almost all baby wipes use that chemical.

Amanda, yes you are correct, this is in a lot of products. The problem is that an infant's skin is 100 time thinner than that of an adult, and therefore these products transfer through the skin easier. That fact, 100 times thinner is taken DIRECTLY FROM THE J&J baby products website. We all should avoid these products, it's harder to do than you realize. However, J&J should have removed this chemical from their baby products when the did so for other countries. It's unacceptable to know there is a safer formula out there and not provide it to the US.

I am with Amanda on this one. There are a million things safe today that tomorrow will say causes cancer and everyone will be up in arms about it. If everyone is going to bash J&J they better look at every other product they use as well that contain the exact same ingredients that no one is even blinking an eye at.

Amanda, understood, but until people start making a stink about it, it will not change...you want to endanger your child just because its in everything else? That makes it ok? The problem with this is that they HAVE another safer formula, but no one in the USA is calling them out on it, so they continue on their merry way.

It's really such a shame...I grew up with Johnson and Johnson, and always thought it was great, I have used pretty much ONLY Johnsons And Johnson, because I thought since its been around forever, it was safe, and trusted, safe and gentle on baby's skin, and of course the no more tears! I am deeply saddened...though I wonder if my doctor didnt know this already because my sixth child has a reaction to Johnson and Johnson, and my doctor told me to stop using it...

Keri, I never thought of that! I am going to pull it out of my recycling bin just in case. Although since it's not going to be a recall I doubt their money greedy company will allow such a trade-in.

If they pull it off the shelves, I wonder if they will allow trade-ins on bottles already bought...I have sooo many due to a great deal @ CVS!

Before everyone gets all up in arms almost all body products use these chemicals!

quaternium-15 - foundation - liquid and powder, eye make up, Deodorants & Antiperspirants, Adult shampoos, wipes, facial cleaner, body soaps, Mascara, baby oil, baby sunscreen, laundry soap, nail polish, adult sunscreen, bubble baths, Moisturizer, and the list goes on and on.

As a nurse I was aware from many years ago and made the decision on the birth of my first child not to use any of their products nor talc powder as when it is inhaled it gels in the babies lungs, all products I used were natural and costly I have since they turned 5 gone onto using the products that are sls, sles, and propolene glycol free and paraben free. At the end of the day it is your informed choice to make and depends on what you can find locally that suits your situation. Best of luck.

I used to use Mrs. Meyer's Clean Baby but I can't find it any where any more. :( So now I use California Baby. :)

Amazon often has specials on the Burt's Bees baby products -- and my baby smells like honey after using their baby shampoo/bodywash! :D

Thanks Elizabeth! Absolutely frustrating that J&J of all companies would knowingly harm babies. We've been taught since we were babies that this "tear free" well this tear free formula has me near tears. Unreal.

Good article, Stacey. I'm in total agreement with every single word you say.

I don't use baby shampoos or soaps anyways. From the day they come home they use adult body wash and shampoos. I see zero reason to spend extra money on baby only products.

I'm furious about this too. I grew up in the UK hearing that the Johnson and Johnson brand was the kindest thing out there to babies' skins etc. Now that I have a daughter, I never thought of using anything else and I'm totally disgusted to find out that they KNOW they shouldn't be using these chemicals.

The fact that their UK products are without these chemicals (according to http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/articl...) but they're not prepared to remove them outright from the US market is ridiculous! They already have the formula they need.

I will be switching to another brand after doing research to ensure I don't pick one that does the same thing.

i had heard about them using the formaldehyde releasing chemicals while i was pregnant...i decided then that i wasn't going to use their products on our baby. i went with Live Clean Baby products instead and i love them!

That's lovely. Is it in ALL Johnson and Johnson shampoos? I have recently switched to another brand, but I do have bath bubbles by them. Is there some sort of list?
