Lactose intolerance?

My 8 month old recently had a mild virus which gave him nasty diahhroea, and awful nappy rash. my doctor suggested that because of the virus he might have gotten some slight lactose intolerance, I put him on lactose free formula and it cleared up in no time. I've tried to put him back on normal formula and he wakes at night, is irritable and gets the nappy rash back. Anyone know how long this "short term" lactose intolerance should last?

He had normal formula for 2 full months before this started..........

My boys' pediatrician suggested Isomil when they were you son's age, because they were colicky and a bit lactose intolerant. It worked fine for them. Then, we eased them both to 1% light milk at 3, depending on the doctor's recommendation. You may have to consult with your pediatrician with your son's tolerance for dairy products as he grows.
