Let him sleep on his tummy?

My 15 week old son falls asleep on his tummy with my husband or I... when we try to lay him down in bed on his back he startles awake and cries until he is picked up again on his tummy. He can definitely pick his head up enoughto look around and change the direction he is facing... do I let him sleep on his tummy and sleep thru the night or do I force him on his back??

Quoting Leslie:

have you tried proping him on his side with a rolled up recieving blanket?  That's how my daughter slept best when she was little.  Then when she was about 6 months old she started sleeping on her belly all the time, nothing we could do to stop her!

i love the little tutu your daughter is wearing where did you get it, we were looking for one for her year old pics.

My little one would natrally turn on her stomach to sleep and if we turned her over she would cry, until she could turn onto her stomach again. Part of it was to do with the colic and it eased it a little. If he can turn his head and or turn over himself then I don't see any problem. Give you sleep and your son.

no if in the night you see he is on his tummy roll him back over onto his back but dont keep checking all night or anything but if you see him on his tummy just roll him over. Babys this age are much safer sleeping on their backs , they sholud be ok to sleep on their tummy at around 1 year old.

Try holding him so that he falls asleep on his back. I would lay my son on the bed next to me and rub his tummy while he fell asleep. Once he is old enough to roll over to his stomach then he can safely sleep on it.

this is, of course, a controversial question.  i've looked into it, and personally am okay with my baby sleeping on his belly (he's 15 weeks old and has been sleeping on his belly for over a month now).  i've found research that says using a pacifier reduces the chance of sids.  i've also found that a study showed first born boys are more susceptible to sids.  i think there are so many factors involved that it's hard to make the blanket statement of putting them on their back.  but in the end, it's your decision and i would encourage you to do what you feel is right.

once they our able to roll over on their own then it is fine for them to sleep on the tummy but until them it is not best.
