My little boy has had diarrhea for just over a week now and is really tired and cranky all they time. He also has a rash on his tummy which seems to be really itchy. I spoke to my doctor over the phone the other day and he just advised me to give him water and really plain foods. I have been doing this for a few days now and nothing has changed. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do. I'm getting very worried that it may be something more serious causing the diarrhea. All suggestions are greatly apreciated.

If this tummy upset has not cleared up after a week then there is obviously something more to this. At two your son might be getting his molars through which do cause an upset stomach. Check inside his mouth to see if the very back teeth are through. I would however strongly advise you to see a doctor for a second opinion. In the mean time try and get your son to drink dioralite to replace salts and sugar that he has lost. Fluid is very important so try and get him to drink a few sips every 15 minutes or so. The fact that he has a rash could be his teeth or a sign of a viral infection. It is not normal for diarrhea to last this long so it needs investigating.

I would take him to the emergency room, if his doc won't do anything. He could be dehydrated, and his potassium could be low. If his potassium is low, it could do all sorts of bad things including making him tired, and have muscle aches and cramps. Also, once it gets so low, it is incredibly hard to get back up by food and drink alone, and he would need IVs. Once he does start feeling a little better, the BRAT diet is best. That is just bananas, rice, applesauce, and (white) toast. The rice and toast should be plain, and the applesauce with no sugar in it. The common things like jello, and popcicles that a lot of people give to kids with upset tummy, could actually make diarrhea worse, because of all the sugar. Also, he should really be drinking pedialyte, because it will help to replace some of the electrolytes that he will lose in the diarrhea. I just had my 5-year-old in the hosp. two weeks ago, because she was having terrible diarrhea, and had pneumonia, and this was all stuff the doc told me to do for her, and it really helped her out alot.
