You should at least wait until your child has learned to brush their teeth because you don't want them to have a tooth decay at a young age.

ok so you can take it or get over it....I don't care for a response to my post.
It is every persons choice what they give their child; breast or bottle, junk or healthy food. Do what you want and stand behind it. I don't remember what age I gave my child chocolate but he had a reeses really early on and by 4 months he knew what the wrapper looked like. My son eats everything he gets. The only thing he will not eat is saurkraut. He eats fruit and veggies EVERYDAY. He does not get junk EVERYDAY. He is not obese. I am not obese. I want my child to experience life and not have a complex as he grows older because he could not experience candy and sweets. He will eat what is put in front of him or go hungry.
Simple as that. It is what my parents did and it worked for my siblings and I. It will work for my kids. So like I stated before, rebuttles are not needed and IT IS EVERY PERSONS CHOICE TO FEED THEIR CHILD WHAT THEY WANT. Their is no reason to talk down about someone's choices in parenting unless it will seriously harm that child. I have never heard of a kid dieing from eating a piece of chocolate.

i gave all my boys a little bit of milky bar when they were about four months.
REALLY??? Babies cant digest dairy until twelve months and it is not recommended they go onto solids until 6 months, why would you feed them chocolate at 4 months?
I would hold off giving babies/toddlers/children chocolate and lollies for as long as possible, it is not a nutritionally appropriate food for them.
Considering the obesity rates around the world we should be teaching our children about healthy food choices. You have the perfect opportunity to teach your children the right and healthy way to eat so they can make healthy choices which will enhance ther lifestyle for years to come. Not to mention the damage that can be done to those new sensitive little teeth.
When I was a child dried apricots and sultanas were my treats, I only ever had sweets if it was a birthday party or Christmas.
i would check the bit about not digesting dairy until they are over a year, my health visitor said 6 months is fine 2 give dairy, most jars of baby food that are for 6months and over contain dairy if you read the ingredients, i have given my daughter drinks of cows milk, shes not keen on it tho, she loves her baby milk, personally i give my daughter a little bit of chocolate every now and then, i try not to give too often tho as it does cause her to want more and more, i think iff you want to give your child a little bit and they are 6months+ then its probably fine, im saying 6months plus as then they can kind of chew a little, i tried my daughter on a tiny bit of chocolate button at around 5months and she just swallowed it, lol, now when moves it around in her mouth a bit 1st

Thankyou everyone for your comments, although i do feel some of you think im sitting here stuffing her face with chocolate, apologies if i was not "specific" about why i was asking and i agree the question was poorly worded... Em was given a milky bar selection box which for the record I have eaten, i had no intention of feeding it to her at this age but was asking a general question... Emily has a very healthy diet and is currently thriving... thanks again for your comments...

I am so confused by alot of answers on here. what age did a lot of adults first have milk, choc and other such things? and when were a lot of the adults first given solids??
I am 29 and I started having solids at about 4 months and had had tastes for at least a month before this and I am totally fine there is no damage to me. And my daughter, who is a very healthy and well developed 2 year old, was also on solids by 4 months and was allow a small amount of choc every now and then as part of a balanced diet. she will quite happyly choose fruit over junk now and I have very few upsets from her about food because she knows that choc is allowed as a treat it is not a bad food or something to be denied. I am in no way saying give you child loads of choc but also don't deny them totally.

That seriously has to be a joke. Why would anyone give an entire chocolate bar to a 10 month old? Next they'll tell me that they light up a joint and pass it around to the kids before bed.

I allowed my babies to taste milky bars that I had chewed and placed on their tongue at around 6 months as a wee treat after the dinner solid. But only a wee a bit not a full bar until they were arount 10 months and holding food in their hands.

Could someone explain to me the benefit to a child's health that comes from giving them chocolate at a young age?
And what are the possible negative outcomes if I don't give my baby chocolate?
Because I am incredibly confused by the assertion that giving a baby chocolate is a good idea and needs to be done.

WOW ! most of you are acting like she going to give her baby a whole bar and have at it !! I have a 6 month old at home (not that i give her all kinds of chocolate or anything) i havn't even giving her chocolate yet but i have giving her a sucker to suck on when she was 4 months. it was only a tiny one and i took it a way once it got down to small. But like i was saying, a taste of chocolate is not gonna kill, deff. not EVERY day. if i were to give my lil girl some chocolate today i would take a tiny peace maybe half the size of your pinky nail and the i would mush it up and give to her. THATS not going to kill her.
Regardless of how much she wants to give her I dont see that as the point, the sore spot on this one for me is that babies bodies are not designed to deal with processed sugary foods, it can have long term negative effets on their health, in the sense that you are giving them a taste for these crap foods so they grow up wanting more, which leads to poor eating habits, tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc. Also there have been studies which say children who are introduced to these foods are more likely to suffer with obesity.
There was another comment earlier abut people being mean in their answers, and by that I presume you are possibly talking about me, I dont feel that I am being mean, just honest; I feel strongly about childrens nurtition and it frustrated me to see fat children scoffing down mc donald, lollies and chocolate, because it is not their fault they are overweight, it is not their fault that they will get teased at school, that they may end up with an unhealthy body image and eating disorder, rotton teeth and all of the other health concerns which go together with obesity, it is the parents fault, it is totally irresponsible.
I cant speak for any other countries but in Australia there is so much information on healthy eating, it is important parents educate themselves as it is such an important issue which will have huge impacts on your childs quality of life.

Well, what are we supposed to think? All she said was "when can you start to give them chocolate?" She didn't specify how often or the quantity, but when you say that you're "starting" to give them something, it implies that this will be taking place on a regular basis. It's one thing for a baby to have a tiny taste of it on his tongue, but no baby should be eating chocolate, let alone regularly.

12 months, a bit of chocolate as a treat is not going to harm a baby, just don't give him a bar a day or you are making a rod for your own back.

We started treat night, Sat night, which is the only time my kids get treats, at 2 years old. Only 2 squares @ 2. 3 @ 3. 4@4. My 15 year old gets 6.
They think it is special because it is only once a week.

I let my son try a piece chocolatey candy when he was about a year and a half. It was halloween.
One time he considerably younger and we were at a bookstore/coffee shop and he was BEGGING for a taste of my coffee. I knew he would hate it and put a drop on a spoon and let him try it. It was a DROP and he did hate it, and happily went back to his bottle and cheerios. But the old man next to me made a comment, He was NOT happy. He acted like I fed him cyanide, lol.
Yeah, that's going too far in the other direction. A drop? That's nothing.
And it's one thing if, for the amusement of your relatives, you let your four-month-old have a tiny lick of chocolate, just to get the taste on his tongue. And even that is doubtful, as so much chocolate contains trace amount of nuts -- you're taking a risk. But to actually let the baby ingest it? No. Not good.

definitely NOT four months... my pediatrician specifies absolutely no sugary treats until after 1 year of age, if even then.
As pointed out by others, there is little to no nutritional value in milk chocolate, and it's up to you, as the parent, to develop your child's taste preferences. Introducing junk food so young is very likely to lead to life long struggles with weight, and various health issues.
It may be "cute" to give a baby chocolate, so why not beer too, or a joint? (complete sarcasm here!!) It's just not appropriate food for a baby, period.

I am so dumbfounded at this question and some of the responses, I cant stop thinking about it, Im a pretty open minded person and not much shocks me however I just cant understand where the need to introduce crap non nutritional foods in to such a new little vunerable person who is totally reliant on you for a healthy upbringing would come from???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This is coming from someone who would live on Milky Bar given a choice lol. I would say never, or hardly ever. My twins are now 16 months (13 corrected) and will eat absolutely anything. But I hardly ever give them sweet stuff (apart from fruit which they get every day). They get totally hyper when they eat chocolate and it's a nightmare getting them to sleep that night. So only really on birthday and Christmas lol.

With my first two I did not give them anysweet like that till they where over one. With my youngest he was about 6 mon. But i must say my girls love to eat normal food like veggies, meat and healthy food. my son does not have a veggie he will eat besides french fries. Some people say the sooner you give them sweet stuff they want it more. I am not saying that is true just what I have gone through. I have been very firm wihit my son to get him to eatthe food my other kids eat but he wont.
