So about a week ago I went to have my IUD removed and my doctor couldn't find my strings so she told me I would have to have it surgically removed. I called the specialist office and she told me that I would be given no anesthetic or anything. She said that oh, he'll find them. I had an x-ray done because I was having really bad cramping on my left side..I still am and it showed my IUD wayyyyy to the left by my hip bone. I'm freaking out here. It was the most painful thing I have ever felt getting it put in and now they want to dig in my insides to find these god damn strings. WTF Has anyone else gone threw this?

Don't let the term 'surgery' freak you out. At my OB/GYN, having the IUD inserted is a "surgical procedure".
I had mine put in about 2 yrs ago and it was excrutiating! I had it removed about a month ago and felt nothing. I had horrible cramps the entire time it was in place-- I would compare it to labor pains (of course, I didn't know that the IUD was causing it). The reason I didn't have it removed sooner was bc I also have endometriosis, so I figured that was causing the pain. I have had absolutely no pain since it has been removed. Good luck to you!

Deana, I got the copper one too and my doctor told me 7 - 10 years. I keep wondering about mine. I've had almost constant period-like cramps since I had mine put in over a year ago. And I haven't had a period since I had my son, over a year ago. I assumed it was just because I was nursing him still. hmmm.

I don't know, all I know is these stories slightly freak me out and make me want to make an appointment with my OB-GYN to double check, I think I need to anyway.

I've tried birth control pills, they give me migraines. And surprise surprise, I got pregnant with my 4th using a condom, the sponge, AND spermicide. Condom broke, sponge got out of place. Hello Christiano. LOL Wouldn't change it for the world, but I don't think I could handle 5 kids right now. So the IUD it was for me. I was going to do Essure, but my doctor looked at my chart and said, you're awfully young to be terminating any chance of having another one. I said, I'm 34, that's young to be having babies (I'm 35 now). I went with the IUD just in case there was an off chance that we'd change our mind and want one more.

I'm sorry so many of you have gone through these problems with the IUD. That's seriously scary.

I've used Depo. First year was amazing. Second year I gained 50lbs in 3 mos. Apparently weight gain can be a huge issue on it. It was super nice to be free from menstruating though.

If you are still interested in birth control, but not another IUD, look into Depo or somehting. I used depo for year, only side effect would be my arm would hurt for a day at the injection site. I would have three months of not worrying about cramps, periods, or pills! I loved it! And it never hurts to ask about a local anesthetic! Good luck.

I had alot of health issues. Almost of the things that are being listed were symptoms that I was having prior to insertion. Mirena releases a fake progesterone(horrible with spelling this stuff) and i was needing this. Insertion was 3seconds of discomfort and I've had no problems. In fact I haven't felt this good for almost a year. After reading all this I will book my follow up asap to see location but it's the best thing I've done for myself in years. I was at the point of not being able to function because of my health and now I'm back. I feel great. I have energy, my periods are controllable, I am sooo relieved that I did this.

So many bad storries, never considered an IUD, it seems so dangerous having something foreign sitting in your uterus. Give me the pill any day!! Us women need more choices with birth control!! My fella refuses to have the snip!! So its still the pill for me untill I have the nerve to get my tubes tied, apparently they do it through the belly button now...must find out more about the proceedure....

I hate IUD's.I had one years ago.It was always there and you knew it.The Uterus does not like it either. The enviroment becomes like and infected area preventing pregnancy. And by the way, people have become pregnant with them still in.

wow thats crazy!!!! i have heard of sometimes it will embed itself in ur cervix/uterus, and ur body rejects it, but l kno it sounds scary as hell but youll be fine ive heard of this, im actually on mirena and have ben 4 almost 2 years and i havent had ne probs, but just hang in there if it was to the point where they thought it was gonna be so serious to the point its a risk they'd put u to sleep, so just let them do their job youll be fine, ur overworking yourself, which is only gunna make it worse 4 u in the long run.

The mirena was toxic to my system and I have found through research online that many women experience terrifying side effects. I had cramping, bleeding, arthritic aches so bad in my joints that I found it painful to walk around the block, depression, bloating, weight gain, and the final straw was an episode that literally felt like a massive heart attack. I contacted my dr after 8 months of having these horrible symptoms and demanded that they remove the device. The physician insisted that the symptoms were not related to the IUD however, w/in 2 weeks, I felt better and the symptoms began to go away. If you are unsure of what you may be experiencing, I urge you to do some online research. Curezone.com has a Mirena Side Effects Support Forum with hundreds of pages of posts from women around the world who have had issues. Yes there are those who have not, but from what I did hear from another doctor, sometimes the combination of hormones and type of hormones w/in the mirena can be toxic to certain women. If you don't feel well, trust your instincts. Get it removed ASAP before you have worse things happen.

I love mine, my husband doesn't like it at times (IYKWIM), but I love the fact I can't remember the last time I had a period. First 12 months was awful until it settled down. This is the best thing I've done. I was on low dose pill and felt like I was pregnant every month, so I stopped thaking the pill and DS turned up.

Cindy. I had tried every other kind of birth control before having my IUD put in. I was on the shot, it made me gain about 15lbs from just the first shot. I was on the patch, it always fell off! I've been on the pill so far it works the best if I remember to take it...which is how my daughter came about lol when I have it removed i'm not going on anything, I think we're going to try and get pregnant again! I hope to god this hasn't done anything to my fertility!!

Went to the hospital and they removed it. I had had it already for two years, and it just fell out. Dont think ill ever get another one,

i have had a very pleasant experience since i had mine placed about 7 months ago after the birth of my 1st daughter. my doctor gave me a pill to dialte my cervix before i had it inserted and i only had mild cramping almost like a mild contraction when it was being inserted. i had minor cramping for maybe 2-3 hours after having it placed. i have not had a period since about a week after it was placed. my husband has only felt the string once and that was about a week after i had it put in. i have been very happy with it and i check for the strings about once per week. i think each persons body reacts different so do your own reasearch and talk to your obgyn and choose what is best for you. i think there can be pros and cons to every form of birth control and or medicine.

I have had nothing but problems with this stupid thing. I bled for 6 weeks after having it inserted!! Then after that I have gotten my period every other week. So I get 2 periods a month! that last about 8 days! Not only that but hair loss, horrible cramps, back aches, migraines..you name it, I've probably experienced it. It hurt more than labor having it put in. When I had it put in she hit a nerve that dropped my blood pressure very low and I couldn't sit up for 3 hours! I hope to god that, that doesn't happen again!!

If you want pain relief get it! If no-one will listen, find an independant clinic or something.
I have had one in and had one taken out without pain relief, I will never get one put in again, ever! It stopped working after 5 years, and I kept having miscarriages, the drs didn't listen to me, saying no problem with it and it is good for 7 yrs. I had changed dr too! Both said it was ok. It was a family planning clinical nurse who finally sided with me, saying it had stopped working. So my body had gone through hell!

Hi Katt,
The same happended with me, when they inserted it they cut the strings too short and it pulled up in your cervics. This was my 3rd IUD and it never ever happend before, they also told me I might need surgery to removed it etc.I went in on the 10th to see the gynoc. and she was just great. She got it out by "digging" a bit with her tools :( it was VERY painfull but its out finally.I am a bit in pain now, like period cramps but aparently it will go away in a few days. But the amazing thing is there was no bleeding afterwards.

to anyone thinking of getting an iud, do your own research. every womens body is different. my iud is the best thing ive done. i dont have cramps, i dont get a period and i dont have any worries after sex. my husband loves it because we can exsplore more without getting pregnant. make your own decisions based on whats good for you dont let other peoples horror stories persuade you to noy o whats best for you.

im sorry to here that you having such a hard time. I have had my iud for 5 years and i just got it removed and reinserted last month. the first time i didnt even feel it but this time i developed fibroids and it hurt like hell. my advise to you is go to another obgyn. my friend had to get hers removed surgically and they put her to sleep. the reason it might have moved is because your uterus might have shifted which was her problem. get a second opinion before you put your self through the pain of surgery without medication.

I have had mine now for a little over a year. I didnt experience much pain getting it and my annual visit is next week. If they cannot locate the strings then I think I will schedule to have it removed ASAP. I have had no problems with it however have had longer periods than normal as of late? Some of these posts sound awful... I wish you the best.

I had mine for 5 years no problems :)

it hurt going in but thats it, like another mom said the only bad thing about it was My husband could feel the stings during intercorse, and I also got pregnant immediately after

one of the responsibilities of having an IUD is checking WEEKLY to make sure the strings are there, If not a trip to the doctor is in order.

I had an IUD for 2 years. Never felt the strings. When I went back for my six week checkup they did an ultrasound and said it was in there, and I wouldn't be able to feel the strings. This past October when I went for my routine visit, my doctor suggested we get another ultrasound just to make sure it was there. We did and she said it was there, but to low and I could get pregnant. I went back the next day to get it replaced and they tried for 45 minutes to get it out and couldn't find it. It was more painful than childbirth with local anesthesia. We did another ultrasound and was told it was not in there that what they saw the day before must of been clotted blood. Since I was sure I had not lost it, they scheduled a hysteroscopy in the O.R. and didn't find it. So we did an xray and it was in my abdominal cavity. Scheduled a second O.R. trip for laproscopy and got it out. So a painful doctors appt, two surgical procedures, and $7,000 later I am IUD free and plan to stay that way.

Aw that sucks. I had one (copper IUD) for 5 years. 5 minutes to get it in, 5 minutes to get it out and rarely thought about it in between. I was pregnant within a week of removal. It's not always bad.

They could not find my strings and I had to have an internal ultrasound for placement. It showed that it was tipped and had grown into my uterine wall. I had to go into the office and have it removed, not surgically though, and they pretty much had to pull it and rip it out of me! It was very painful!! Stupid me though, I went back and got another one put in. Since then I noticed that it was causing weight gain, mood swings, and a lot of periodic pains in my uterus. After all of this I have made an appt to get it out for good!

my sister in law just went through an ectopic pregnancy, because the doctor that inserted her IUD actually went through her uterus-she complained about the pain when he inserted it, she couldn't even stand up. when she went back for her check-up, she still had pain. she almost died because of the ectopic pregnancy and now i'm telling her to sue her initial doctor.
i check my IUD on a weekly basis, the moment i can't feel it, i call my doctor-this is something not to mess around with. women, if you can't feel the strings, you need to tell your doctor-it's as simple as that and as precious as your life and future children's life.

I have had my IUD for almost 3 years, and I guess I should've done more research too. I haven't had any problems but, after reading all of this I'm afraid to get mine taken out. I can say I am one of the Mirena users that can say that I don't have any complaints. This is one birth control that has actually worked for me.

My experience has been nothing but positive. I had it placed in after the birth of my last child over 4 years ago. I was going to have my tubes tied but had complications during the c-section. This was the next best thing since I did not want to take the pill. I had my annual in Feb and the placement and strings were fine. I will have it replaced Feb of next year when it "expires". The only problem I had after it was placed was that it took me over 6 mos to regulate. No pains and no cramping. Now its a crap shoot as to whether I will have a period month to month. I will go 5 to 6 months with none. Drives husband nuts because he is always worried that there is a possibility that I could be pregnant.
Best of luck with your situation! I feel for you.

I had my IUD taken out when I couldn't locate my string and my doctor was no longer able to find them. So they first did a xray to make sure it was still in my uterus. Once that was confirmed. I went into the office you can take motrin or vicodin before hand if you have any and you think you need it for pain control. They first put you in stir-ups then they place the speculum in so they can visualizeyour cervix and look for the IUD. They will have to dilate you some so you will have quite a bit of cramping so just be aware it may not be pleasant if you do not have a high pain tolerance some people end up needing to be put asleep to have there IUD removed in this situation. Once you are dilated the doctor must then use some other instruments to locate the IUD which can cause more discomfort. I was able to tolerate all this without needing to take anything for pain. Once they locate your IUD the MD will pull it out, then remove the speculum and clean you up. If they are unable to locate the IUD or you cannot tolerate the procedure they will most likely set you up with a date to have it removed in the hospital under sedation. Hope this helps. I hope I didn.t scare you with the explanation of what to expect. But mine went fine no problem just some discomfort. But then again I do have a high pain tolerance.

I had a lost IUD also and had it surgically removed. I was put under a mild anesthetic when it was done. They replaced it with a new one after so I felt no cramping the second time around! Now that I have my second one, it seems like the side effects aren't as bad. It has been a blessing for me! ;-) It is really common for them to cut the strings too short and not be able to see them. I always had to have an ultrasound to have it checked out. Your situation is a little different since it's showed up by your hip bone (ouch) but I am sure they will give you something for pain when it's done. If not, then request it. Good Luck!
