I had the Mirena IUD places about 10 or 11 weeks ago and got my period right away. It was QUITE long, too. More than twice as long as my usual period. Anyhow, how long does it take for the bleeding to stop altogeher, meaning NO MORE PERIODS!!!?

I have had my Mirena in for about a year and half to two years. I still have my period at least once every month if not twice. At the beginning, it took about 2 months for me to get on a somewhat regular schedule. I would cramp a couple days right before it started. I would sometimes get my period twice a month which only gave me a week free of bleeding--it was VERY frustrating. I would also sometimes bleed after having sex--it was like it kickstarted the period.

My periods into the 8-12 months range were very irregular. Cramping was horrible (no prior hx of bad cramping). Sometimes I wouldn't even have to wear a pad or tampon because it "wouldn't leak out". After the year mark, I started reading that if you take Aleve, it will decrease the flow, and some times make the periods shorter. Ever since I start taking Aleve, it has been lighter, but still lasts for 7-10 days. Before having the Mirena, my period were normal and lasted 4-5 days, with no cramping.

Pro: The only reason I still keep the Mirena is because 1) I hope that my period will stop one day. 2) Its a whole lot cheaper than taking pills orally or using the nuvaring. 3) When I first put it in, I wasn't planning on having any kids for the next 5 years.

Cons: More cramping than usual. Longer periods. More irregular periods. The string on the Mirena was irritating my partner, so i had it clipped. Now I have to go in and pay for check ups if I am concerned about it being moved, or dislodged, or other problems. There is now a "lawsuit" going on against side effects from the Mirena.

I'm sure it's different for everyone, but I had mine put in about 17 months ago, and my periods just stopped in the last couple months. They will be long to start, but then they get shorter, lighter and eventually cease altogether

Is there a difference with this IUD. I had an IUD for five years and never stopped getting my period. In fact i would also bleed when ovulating?

I had the Mirena put in and I never stopped my period, instead they became very irregular. I also started losing clumps of my hair so I had to have it taken out. I now have the Copper T.

You have had the Mirena in fora very short time, I had mine put in at 9 weeks post caesarian- I had a history of very heavy periods prior to insertion. It took me about 4 months before I noticed a big difference then over time my periods stopped. I am in my 4th year post insertion - I do not have periods, and look forward to getting it replaced next year. However you must have been told that not everyone stops their periods altogether? there is always a small chance that you will just have very light periods. Just be a little more patient. Take care

20 percent of women will still experience a period every month after 1 year. So you may still get a period. Mine still comes *i have had it in for almost a year and a half* but it doesn't come very heavily. It lasts about a week, but it's sooooooo light, i hardly notice. Also I skip a period every now and then. But give it about 3-6 mos. you should find that your periods become very light and may disappear all together.

Its different for everyone, i had mine put in in March of '09, and right away i stoped bleeding. I spoted a couple times but other than that nothing! I do find it sometimes hurtful to have sex and after i might spot but like i said its different with everyone. If you feel its not normal contact your doctor!

I had a mirena for 2 1/2 years and loved it. I still had very light periods with it that whole time. Then I started bleeding and it wouldn't stop for two months. They removed it but it continued and I was really sick. I'm not saying this to scare you, just means that its different for everyone. My twin sister and I got them a month apart and she never had any problems or a period and she just got it removed and a new one put in with no problems so far! I also could not conceive for about 6 months then it happened in one try on accident when we had stopped trying. Good Luck!

yeah, i didn't know about that when i first got it and then all of a sudden i was bleeding. i called the doctor and they said it could last up to around 2 months...mine lasted for 2 months and a few days :-/ it was pretty annoying...but after that i've only had my "period" (2 days of spotting) once and i've had it for about 9 months. IT'S AWESOME!!!

I first had the device put in December 2004. I bleed for three months, then no more bleeding, ever! I love it. I didn't even know I was having a period. never got any PMS, never any spot bleeding. I replaced it in August 2009 and my periods have been lighter and lighter each month. I would say by the looks of how my period flow is going each month, I should not have any periods in about two more months. By the looks of everyone's posts, everyone is experiencing it a little differently.

I've had mine in for 18 months and I still get break through bleeding. But only for a day once a month. I would rather have the 1 day a month verse a whole week monthly. I still do get PMS as well, but it isn't as severe and nothing a little chocolate can't fix ;)

It's different w/everyone & not everyone stops. I had mine for about 6 mos. & my cycle was odd most the time, then got lighter & shorter. Be careful w/it tho...I had mine taken out tho bcuz neither I or my doctors could find the string for about a wk, & they told me that it could've gone up into my uterus, which they would have to do surgery to get it out & could cause damage. But they finally found it & I had them take it out so I wouldn't have to worry about it again. We've been trying to conceive our 2nd baby since Jan., but they say fertility may not return for up to 1 yr. I think, so I'm hoping it's not permanent.

I've had mine in for almost 2 years now and I still have occasional bleeding but it only last for about 2 days. I think eveyone is different as to when and if they stop bleeding.

I had it done July 22 and i had my period and then spotting until the middle of august and no period for september but had one in october lasted a week. My doctor said by the first year women reported not having one after that.....And still waiting to see what november will bring. I think it depends on our bodies. Up until the middle of august i was fed up with it b/c of always bleeding/spotting but now i guess i can handle every other month just hope it does go away by next july. Hope i could help have a nice day.

I had a "heavy" period the first couple of months & then it tapered down...you *should* stop having them about a year into it :) Seems like a long wait, but trust me, it is worth it!
