I am a mom with tattoos/piercings. Im not covered, but I have quite a bit of ink. I know they are not completely accepted in the workplace, but I was wondering...Are there any moms with tattoos and piercings? Have you ever been discriminated against or asked to cover them up? What do you tell your children when they ask about your tattoos/piercings?

Keep it clean ladies...this is just a friendly discussion!!

I currently 3 tattoos and 16 piercings. All 3 of my tattoos are fairly small and/or easy to cover up. The tattoo I get most attention about is on the inside of my wrist, it's fairly small and some people don't even notice until it's pointed out. I've never had an issue with it in jobs.
All my piercings are 'non-controversial'. I have 12 in my ears, my belly button, my lip and the back of my neck. Again, I've never had any real dscrimination for them. Customers at my previous job would describe me as "the blonde one with the lip ring" but it wasn't ever really a problem. I get a lot of comments about my neck piercing but it's extremely easy to hide so it hasn't been a problem.

I do have plans to get more, of each, but at this point it's a money issue. I am currently pregnant with my first so I haven't had to explain it to my children yet, but I have thought about it. Piercings to me were always an easier choice because they are not permanent. My thoughts on tattoos are; make sure you love it, and will forever. All of mine have lots of meaning and were drawn up for years before I actually got them done.

Hope this helps!!

I have 4 tattoos, and finally got my ears pierced when my daughter was 2 (now 5) after having gotten hers done, and called all sorts of things like barbaric for making her do it when I never had mine done. lol

I've always been told that I couldn't wear shorts in the summer at jobs like everybody else because of my tats. There was one job though, that didn't care. If we had new ink, our sleeves, or pant legs, could be rolled up so as not to rub on the tat while healing.

My daughter sees my tattoos, in fact, sat on my lap for my 3rd one..she thinks it's a fascinating thing and asked when she could get one. I just told her when she was 18 and she still wanted one, I'd pay for it so long as it wasn't something stupid, it needed to have meaning behind it. She makes do with temporary tattoos, and her favorite thing is when I take water color colored pencils, and draw them on her myself. They only last a day or two that way, but look more realistic...plus, it's "mommy's work" :D

I have a few peircings, but my son is too young to ask. Right now he likes to yank the jewelry. I wonder what I'll say when he does start asking.

i have three tats. One on my leg, one on my chest and one on the back of my neck. All in places that can be covered but most of the time they arnt. I have 11 peircings in my ears, my belly button, and my nose. I tell my kids what they are and i let my son take my belly button ring in and out. its fun for him. He is 2. I dont shelter my kids from it. I was actually talkin to my grandma about this the other day. The way i see it, sooo many people have these things and if u shelter your kids from it, or tell them they are bad, then what happens if an old friend or a family member comes up on your kids one day and sees them. The child will automatically think they are a bad person. Then you have to go back on what you told them and it will confuse them. I dont shelter my kids from anything because eventually they will see everything you shelter them from and they will either see it as something new and fun and rebel against you, or they will have a total shock at what they see.

I currently have 1 tattoo and 1 facial piercing and am wanting to get more. I have been talked down to by some of my family for getting a tattoo. I have my son's foot prints, name, and dob on my foot. It's a very meaningful tattoo because my son passed away 15 days after he was born. I plan on explaining to my daughter when she's older that a tattoo is a permanent thing and also help her make the choice if she wants one.

I have two tattoos, one is of three turtles (I love them and I got three for my baby, husband and myself) and it has his birthday in the middle of the baby turtle. I also have a large peacock on my shoulder, my niece tells everyone that she wants to get a chicken like Aunt Rozie. LOL! I have my tongue, lip, and ears pierced. (6 in my ears, 8 all together) My family doesn't understand why I wanted to get my lip pierced, they think that it is just stupid. I just tell them that it is how I want to express myself... Oh and my baby just turned one so he hasn't had a chance to ask me any questions. When he does, I am going to honest with him and if he wants one I will probably have him watch one being done (and then tell him he has to wait until he knows exactly what he wants.

I have 4 tattoos of varying szes. The biggest one is on my right arm and with the right t-shirt i can cover it up (not that i want to mind you). The place i get funny looks is the school playground by other mums. At work i would have to cover it up as i usually work in an office. My husband has quite a few so my kids are used to it. My daughter is nearly 7 and is already talking about her 1st tattoo. I waited until i was 19 to have my first one and i chose carefully and that's the advice we give her. It would be really hypocritical of me to say don't get one just chose carefully. Nowadays it tends to be more acceptable as there are more of us that are willing to show of their art. The only thing is they become very addictive and i can't wait for more. x

I have 1 tattoo, a dragon on my ankle. I also have my tragus, my ear cartilage, 2 x each ear lobe and my belly button pierced.
I think I will get another tattoo one day,. I always wanted my lip pierced but now with a baby on the way I don't know if I will. Just feel a little funny about it now, no idea why. I guess it's because I am finished Uni and am getting into the grown up world.

DP has both nipples, nose, lip, ear cartilage x 2 and belly button done and he used to have his tongue done too. He has no tattoos and hates them. The girls he has dated before have had their noses pierced but he says nose piercings on girls are disgusting so i dunno how he actually feels about my piercings. He says he forgets I have a tattoo if he doesn't see it.

Thinking about getting another on the other foot after baby is born and hide it from him and see how long it takes him to notice! lol! Wanted one on my wrist but I am a chef and get burnt from time to time so dunno i it's a good idea or if it will just get ruined with a burn

I have a tattoo and a piercing, the piercing was before my baby, that tattoo was FOR her. I waited until I was "old" to get the tattoo and only got it so I would have a reminder of my little sweet pea on me at all times (like I can stop thinking about her at all) My only rule about her getting either a tattoo or piercing when she is older is going to be no gauging (I am a teacher and I have seen the sad hanging earlobes of too many kids) and wait until you find a piece of work that is meaningful to you. Just because you love New Kids on the Block now, does not mean you will want NKOTB 4E on you always (a friend has this...I still find it hysterical)..

i have been told to take my toung piercing out at work and with one employer was even asked to take out a set of earings as they had a two earing policy, lol.
at one job i was forbidden to wear low cut tops incase someone saw a small tatt on my breast, this was a retail chain for underwear not corperate or conservative, mind you i had these tatts and piercings when they employed me

I have 6 tattoos and 3 piercings (currently). I love ink and piercings and plan on getting more. Only two of my inks are visable and none of my piercings are. I'm lucky to have a job that doesn't care about them. My daughter is 7 and asks about it frequently. She's even seen me get one done. She knows it hurts and she's such a princess that she says (for now) that it's "so no for her" just like children since giving birth is "painful" (how she knows that I don't know). I don't see it as a negative and she doesn't either. It's all suited to the person. Yes, I have been asked to cover up, and for the sake of a job I will. I don't hide necessarily or purposefully for her though, because it's something she will be exposed to one way or another. Good communication is the key.

I am tattooed and pierced and I have been asked to cover up. My tattoo is a fairy with clothing on so i couldn't understand why people felt that way. I asked my children if it bothered them and they said no. As a matter of fact my son who is 9 actually said "mom they are just scared because your different" he said he liked me to be that way because it shows him he can be his self and not everyone will accept it but he said everyone does things that aren't always accepted in one place or another. We can't please everyone.

I have both tattoos and piercings. My little one is only 3 months, so we haven't had the discussion yet, but I will tell her what I tell others who ask. . . She can have a piercing when she is diligent about her cleanliness and has a reason other than "I want one because so-and-so has one." Tattoos are permanent. I waited until I was thirty to get my first one. They need to be significant to her and she needs to be 100% certain. . .and aware of what they will look like when she's 80!

Yep. I'm only 20. I wasn't a mother at the time, but I worked at Burger King and I had so many people "call me in" and tattle because I had a lip ring. I didn't take them out EVER even when I was supposed to because to me especially in a fast food place I think you should be able to keep stuff like that. One lady just got on my case for having it and calling me stupid and stuff.
I think some places it's not the best, but with tattoos what can ya do ya know?

Me and my husband both have tattoos. Matter of fact we both just went and got new ones for our baby girl. My oldest son thinks that they are cool and he talks about when he gets his own. But I have told him that he needs to wait and that he will know what wants later. We haven't made it a big deal, but we think that they are just a expression of art.

I've got both. My mom likes to go the whole "you're body is a temple" route with me. I tell her I'm redecorating. Having different views than her, or anyone else, is only human.
I've been asked to cover, remove, hide, take out, you name it. I'm not covered in tattoos. My tattoos are not offensive, derogatory, vicious, etc. I'm not covered in metal. The most "hidden" one I have is my belly button, and it will be seen at the pool this summer.
For my kids, I will probably choose the art discussion. It is a form of expression. I've chosen tattoos that have significant meaning in my life (memorial, life experience, beauty......). I feel that it is important to be able to express yourself. I don't think that lying to my kids about them, or trying to hide anything from them is an option. My mom chose to keep me in the dark about so many things that I eventually lost trust in her. I don't want that with my kids.
There are pros and cons to everything. Make them aware, and let them make their own decisions.

Well just to clarify. I have a butterfly tribal on my wrist which is the only 1 visible and thats the one I was told I would have to cover if I got a job. But every other place I have worked including my current job which is at a nursing home I was told as long as its not offensive it didn't matter. My other one is the drama faces on my upper arm and no one can see it unless I wear a tank top as well as the 1 on my calf I have to wear shorts and on days I can wear shorts to workI have long shorts that I wear just in case because its a celtic cross with a dragon in it. I do plan to get more including my boys names and a couple others but along with what others have said its because of money that I have not gotten anymore. I have been debating on getting piercings. I want my tounge and my ears all pierced but Im allergic to nickle so its kinda hard to get the piercings.

[deleted account]

I have been asked to cover up the tattoo on the back of my shoulder a few times by my principal.....thank god I carry a sweat shirt with me at all times. When I was younger my supervisor always asked me to remove my extra earrings because it was against work policy to have more then one. Now I've noticed that as long as they are covered in the work place they are acceptable. Never been descriminated against tho for them.....mine are mostly music related so. As for telling my child....both daddy, mommy and the dog have tattoos so I'm guessing I'll tell her what my parents did. You can wear the temporary tattoos until you decide if and when you are ready for a real one and then we will discuss the guild lines for getting one then. Personally I'm more worried about how I'm going to tell her about mommy's fake boobies.....yeah I'm think and you can feel that they are not really real but DH doesn't complain.

I have 3 tattoos and my boys ask about them but its nothing major I just tell them its paint and they are okay with it. I have only tried to get 1 job and was told I would have to cover the one on my wrist if I got the job. Non of my tattoos are offensive so I really have not had a problem with them.

I would cover my body in tatts if I could afford it,lol

I don't think tatts are for everyone, many regret it so I would feel it's important to have a keen understanding of my kids personality before I'd support their decision to get a tattoo.....in saying that I would'nt prevent them, once they're over 18 lol....piercings are not as permanent so they can go gung ho on them if it's just for the sake of fashion!!!

I asked her if when she gets up and puts her jewlery on does she take out her earrings or put them in?!? Why should I have to take out my jewlery to go to work? If I do everyone else should to!!

Three tats and multiple piercings. None of mine show (except my ears) , so its never been an issue at work, but I thought of that up front. I have a tat on my lower back, one on my pelvis, and one on my nipple. I have both nips pierced ( and adore how they feel!), and my clit too. I am a single moim of a 16 y/o daughter. She loves my art! FOr her 14th birthday I took her to have her nipples pierced too. She has nice small gold rings in hers to match her Mom's now. More later I'm sure!

I too have a total of 5 tattoo's and plan to get more, my children take a part in choosing tat for me, and we talk about tattoo's, and how some people don't agree with people that do have them. We also talk about placement, because you do have to take in the factor of getting a job. Put them wear they can be easly covered for a job.

I have 2 tats (thirds on its way once I'm done breast feeding) and 11 piercings. I have never had isues at work. But then again I work at a factory. When It comes to my children getting piercings or tats I think I'm going to fallow the rule my mother gave us. You can have a few piercings in your ears, but no tats or body piercings until your 18 and old enough to have thought about that these are with you for the rest of your life.

I have a rather large hamdryad tattoo on my back, it is basicly a wood nymp that is part of a tree.. most peole call her a "tree lady" she is all natural (her breasts are exposed) My mother complains to me to get the breasts covered with some ivy or something. but at my sons age it really is not aproblem. All of my friends are tattoo people so they don't mind. and my sister in law has a son and he really doesnt say anything about it.. people really enjoy my tattoo more than they discriminate against it. but if in the future when my son is older and I am in a swim suit around him or friends if it ever becomes uncomfortable for him i will add the ivy.

Both me & the daddy have tattoos. & so do all the grandparents (her papa has 16!!!) so she thinks their awesome & covers herself in temps to be just like all of us.

Job interviews are the only time we've needed to cover them up. After that, it doesnt really matter. Tatts are becoming more popular so ppl are becoming more accepting of them... as long as you dont have a naked chick on ur arm & something obscene across your neck/ face, i think its fine =)

I have quite a few visible and non visible tattoos and piercings. I work in a grocery store and so far have not been asked to cover anything up. If i had been asked, however, i wouldn't. My ink and my piercings are a part of me and they should be accepted. My daughter is only 8 months old so she cant quite ask about them yet but when she does I will tell her that I love all of my pieces and i consider them art and that she shouldn't be ashamed about her mother and my choice in body art should anyone happen to say anything to her.

My tats are semi easy to cover up only the ones on my upper arms are hard at times - never had a problem getting work as most places just want them covered up which their work shirts do as best as possible.
My son is 3yrs and we say mum has pictures on her - when he is older i will tell him what it really is but i have more tats i want to get and my hubby is now joining in the fun and wanting to get his first

My husband and I both have tattoos and I have my nose pierced. I have had jobs where I couldn't show/wear them before. I am looked down upon at times for having them, but I don't let other people's problems bother me. I now work for our school district and they have no problem with piercings or tattoos as long as they are not racist, nude, ect. In fact, I'd say half of the teachers have a piercing somewhere on their body (excluding the ears).

My kids (5 & 7) LOVE temporary tattoos and I use them as rewards instead of having a sticker chart. It works so much better for us :). They were both facinated with our tattoos for years and would constantly touch them. My husband has both their names tattooed on his arm and the boys have had a higher sense of importance ever since he did that. They just thought it was awesome. My nose piercing was different and it bothered my boys for months, but after that they got use to seeing it and it's "normal" to them now.

My 7 year old wanted a tattoo really bad, until we were watching a show on TV and he saw how they are "applied" to the skin. He looked at me at one point and asked what was vibrating... I said a needle (actually 4, but I could see the terror already LOL). After the show was over he informed me he didn't want a really tattoo... he was fine with pretend ones. I cracked up, it was pretty cute!

My husband and I both have tattoos; mine are covered but his show alittle. I have pre-school age children and they don't think much about it, just get excited that daddy has their baby footprints on him. Neither one of us has been discriminated against, but i know of a few places that have refused to hire people i know becasue of tattoos on their forearms, that would show when "in proper uniform", most of which are quick service resturants. Also a amusement park I was employeed at as a teenager requires you to cover them, but they would allow band-aids, makeup, jewelry..basically anything you could find to cover it with.
I agree that your kids need to make up their own mind as far as wanting a tattoo, and if they decide its for them i would tell tell to think it over, find the best place, tattoo and artist that is right for them. But I won't be signing my permission for them to get one underage; so they will be 18 unless the laws get changed.

I have 6 tatoos and a tongue and a monroe peircing. My older kids, teens, have never had a problem with it. My youngest is too young to "get it" he just like playing with my jewelry. When he starts asking we will just tell him it is art...that is how we see it anyway. (Hubby also has tatoos and jewelry)
I have never had any issues at work. I can't really cover some of mine, one on the back of my neck and a fairly large chest peice. My last job, before I got pregnant, was as receptionist at my church and it was never an issue. I love my church! :)

I have tattoos and piercings as well. My daughter isn't at the age where she can inquire about them, but when she does I plan to just explain that when she's a certain age she can choose or choose not to have them. She is beautiful either way, with or without. Like you I will definitely advise her to think long and hard, and then think some more about what she gets put onto her body permanently! And also that it may in fact affect the way other people look at her. But, hopefully my daughter will choose to surround herself with people who are loving and supportive! (Like her Momma and Daddy do!)

I don't work so I haven't had an issue with my 1 tattoo. It is on my boob and you can't see it unless I have a swimsuit top or just in my bra most of the time. I wear tank tops most of the time and my son has seen it and points to it and says "Tattoo. Pretty Tattoo." DH (his daddy) has one on his forearm and DS says the same thing to him too. He likes temp tattoos. I plan on getting my next one on my thigh that looks like a garter belt but the "elastic" in the middle is going to be DH's name. So the only itme that will be visible in a swimsuit. I want to have about 10 or so. DH wants a couple more. When my son gets old enough to understand, I will tell him that a tattoo is something special and should mean a lot to you. He should think really hard about what he wants and that the only rule I have is to wait until he is 18.

I have a few piercings, mostly visible, and in my work as a teacher I have never been asked to cover or remove them.

I am at home with my kids at the moment, and before I return to teaching (once they are both at school) I intend to get a tattoo on each of my forearms, one of Ivy foliage and one of Rowan foliage, as these are the names of my children. It will be interesting to see if I come across any problems with their visibility, but the potential for this certainly doesn't put me off having them.

Just thought I'd throw in a cute story-

My brother has loads of tattoos and piercings, just about all visible and quite a few of them on his face ( 2 facial tattoos and 5 facial piercings by my count) as well as VERY stretched ear lobes. So he cuts quite a distinctive figure in our small rural village! We are very active in our community, and my brother had volunteered to be the santa at the playschool Christmas fair. I was quite worried that my 3 year old daughter would work out who it was in the suit, so he made sure he covered as much as he could with the beard and hoped for the best! All my daughter said when she came back from her chat with santa was "mummy, guess what, santa has beautiful patterns and jewellery on his face like uncle Ryan!" She didn't suspect a thing!
