my 7mo girl has what look like canker sores on the side of her mouth and came down with a fever last night also. I do not suspect thrush as I have no symptoms (breastfeeding) but her mouth seems to be bothering her and she doesn't want to really open it, although she is bf-ing just fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

thrush really sucks my one month old and I just got over it...in case you do get any symptoms it really helps to pump and feed from a bottle for a few feedings to let your nipples have a rest from the strong jaw of your baby, mine got so bad that I had deep cracks that were bleeding and what I did was put a little bit of canola oil on my areola before I would pump, this made it nice and easy to pump(and remember to start on the lowest setting and work your way up to the highest) be very careful you do not want to get it, we have had it for two weeks and it is just now starting to get better!

I agree with Jeni. Have her checked out. Also check the palms of her hands and the bottom of her feet for blisters like spots. Very contagious in children.

Your little one may have the virus called Hand, Foot & Mouth (Not to be confused with the cattle virus Hoof & Mouth disease!). It is a virus that causes mouth ulcers, fever, & rash on the hands & feet. Two of my kids have had this virus & it can be very painful. I would have it checked out by your doctor. My daughter had a very severe case of this virus but my son's case a year later was more mild. We made a mix of benedryl & maalox (equal parts) as a soothing mouth rinse but my daughter had to get litocain for her pain. Don't mean to scare you but definitely something to have the dr. check out.

more than likely it is just a virus (both of my daughters got these frequently when they were young, some people are just more prone to them) and there isn't anything you can do to make them go away, they will go away on their own, however my dr always prescribed my daughters with a litocain solution, its just a clear gel that numbs their mouth so that they don't feel the pain. You should bring her in before it gets too unbearable for her and if it is something other than a virus he can diagnose it then.

Hi! I am not sure how bad your little girls sores are but if they spread outside of her mouth, like on her lips, it could be a non threatning form of herpes. Not the sexual kind kind but just the cold sores form.

My son just turned one, and when he was nie months he got them in his throat, roof of his mouth, and then it spread to the outside of his lips for a while. We are not sure how he got it b/c there is no telling on what all he puts in his mouh. It was so scary but the Ped Dr. said that it just had to run its course.

I don't mean to scare you, but it was scary for me too.

Also you can go to WebMD.com and they have lots of answers to things.
