Was wondering what others mums have been told by their doctors about taking multi vitamins while breast feeding. Had a doctor tell me to stop taking them as they will cause serious damage to my little one if i keep taking them, made me wonder if anyone else had been told this.

We have been conned into thinking that vitamin supplements are necessary. They're not, unless you're ill or have an inadequate diet.
This is from the DGAG on Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010:
Many people understand the importance of good nutrition but believe that a daily multivitamin/mineral pill will substitute for actually eating the foods that they know are good for them. However, the more scientists learn about nutrition and the human body, the more they realize the importance of eating foods in their most intact forms without added solid fats, sugars, starches, or sodium.
Many mothers today are told to take multivitamins while breastfeeding (I wasn't.) But why?
"The evidence does not warrant routine vitamin-mineral supplementation of lactating women... Encourage lactating women to follow dietary guidelines that promote a generous intake of nutrients from fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads and cereals, calcium-rich dairy products, and protein-rich foods such as meats, fish and legumes. Such a diet would ordinarily supply a sufficient quantity of essential nutrients... Encourage sufficient intake of fluids -- especially water, juice, and milk -- to alleviate natural thirst. It is not necessary to encourage fluid intake above this level... Calcium, multivitamin-mineral supplements, or both may be advised when dietary sources are marginal and it is unlikely that appropriate dietary practices will or can be followed."

Despite all this, the multinatiomnal companies who produce vitamin supplements, who have a vested interst in selling the things, continually bombard us with "advice" about vitamin supplements. It's a billion dollar global industry.
But we don't need it. let's not be conned.

There are breastfeeding multivitamins out there, so I doubt they'd cause serious damage to your baby!

AS Sarah says, if you're eating a healthy, balanced diet you shouldn't need vitamins. Let's not be conned by the multinationals!

If you're eating a healthy diet, you shouldn't really need any suppllements, with the possible exception of iron if you're anaemic following the birth.

I've never heard that. I was always told to continue taking my prenatal or another multi vit while nursing.

I was told to continue taking my prenatal vitamin as long as I was breastfeeding. Ask your doctor again, is there something specific in the vitamin you were taking he doesn't like...should you be taking prenatals instead? I can't understand why he would tell you to just QUIT vitamins all together...without an explanation.
