hello, i have a question, my fourteen year old daughter wants my boyfriend of 8 years to be her father and change her name to his, however her real dad will not let this happen even tho he dose not ever see her unless we bump into him at walmart,is there any way to make this happen for her

in Iowa my son had to wait till he was 14...then he had to file the paper work himself....as long as one parent agrees......under the age of 14 both have to agree or have a court hearing

She can always use your boyfriends name socially and not legally.
That's what I did. I have my fathers last name on my birth certificate, so for things like doctors visits or anything else that needs your legal last name, I used that. But in school and to all my friends and whatever else, I used my moms last name. Hardly anyone even knew my legal last name. It's a good way to get used to it for the next few years, and then, as other people have said, she can change it when she's 18 :)

It's possible to petition the courts for a name change for a minor but without both parents agreeing its not very likely to be granted. Most likely you'd just be setting her up to get her hopes up and being told no. She can change it herself when is 18. Remind her that love is what makes family not dna or last names he can be her father without sharing his last name him loving her makes him her father in all the ways that really matter.

Unfortunately unless her bio dad signs off to allow it she will have to wait till she is 18.
