I've worked in many day cares, and they teach children a lot... Perhaps you've been burned out by a few bad ones

wow beth, harsh much? kids at that age DO learn, they get taught their ABCs and how to count, they learn colors and shapes... exposure to these things LEAD to actual memorizing it

Nursery school is for the year prior to Kindergarten (around age 4) where some basic learning occurs. A 17 month old will be in daycare where no real learning occurs and they will just be watched by a daycare worker to make sure they eat, don't get hurt and get their diaper changed.

Let's call it what it is. 17 month old babies don't go to Nursery School. They go to daycare. Her immune system will be just fine. Kids in daycare often end up with stronger immune systems due to increased exposure. Their immune system gets "exercise" when exposed.

In my office my collegues are saying it is better to take your child to Montessori nursery school. What is the difference between the two?

Of course kids at that age DO learn. I didn't say they didn't. They just won't learn much of anything in most daycares.
