Ok so my son is now 19 months old and only says about 3 words, papa, doggy, & uh-oh..... should I be concerned that he doesn't talk more and that he doesn't say mama at all?

I would talk to your dr. There might not be anything wrong, but it could be as simple as not being able to hear well. Should know at least 8-10 words at this point, but all children develop differently. When I go to my pediatrician appointments, she asks a series of questions to see where my daughter is at. If its just one or two things he is behind in it's not as concerning as having multiple delays. Again, having this delay doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong but it can be an indicator
Enjoys being read to.
Follows simple commands without gestures.
Points to simple body parts such as "nose."
Understands simple verbs such as "eat," "sleep."
Correctly pronounces most vowels and n, m, p, h, especially in the beginning of syllables and short words. Also begins to use other speech sounds. These are some things he should be able to do in the 18-23 month range.
Says 8 to 10 words (pronunciation may still be unclear).
Asks for common foods by name.
Makes animal sounds such as "moo."
Starting to combine words such as "more milk."
Begins to use pronouns such as "mine."

My son was not talking much at all. When he was 18 months old, he was only saying a few words. His dr had him get an evaluation with Early Intervention. He ended up needing Speech Therapy. He's now almost 3 and no longer needs speech therapy. Talk to your dr if you are concerned.

Well my son is now 18 months and 3 weeks old. He signs "more" and "eat" and then says the words mama, dada, baba....yes, mine. He doesn't actually point to me or my husband and call us mama and dada he just walks around saying it. Since my husband is in the army we have access to all sorts of nice programs. There is this one called EDIS and so we had them evaluate my son. He scored very low on communication just as we had thought he would. So now he will be enrolled into their program and they are going to help us get him on track with his talking. Maybe you should say something to his doc....maybe find out if there is a program like what we have for you?

As long as he is healthy I would not worry. My nephew did not start talking until he was three. He just was not ready to talk, there was nothing wrong with him, he was and is a healthy child, but just was not ready to talk.

Try get his hearing tested... and if he is having trouble saying the words then try getting him into school like first step or head start.. its pre school.. you may have to get a referal.. My daughter is 2 yrs old and when she says five its pive, poor and stuff like that..ever since she started she has been doing great!!!

A friend of mine has a 2 year old that doesn't say anything! Not even Mama and Dada and she isn't the least bit concerned. I have asked her if she's taken him to the Dr, she said no. Anyways, if you're concerned a quick call to a nurses hotline or your Dr's office will put your mind at ease. My son is 14 months old and says a few words, many only I understand.
