My 3-week old baby girl is constantly crying while she's awake. I check to see if she's hungry and check her diaper, but even if its not one of those two things, she still cries. I walk around with her; cradling her and rocking her and sometimes that doesn't work either. Can anyone help?

Check that u burp her nicely and see if she is not suffering from any colic pain. Make a paste of Asafoetida (Ferula assafoetida), alternative spelling asafetida paste by mixing Asafoetida powder with warm water and then apply it very litle gently around her naval area and keep her tummy, back and body warm. Cover either the feet or the head. Not both at a time. You will see that she will start passing gases after half an hour or an hour. Lay your girldown on your lap on her tummy and pat her back slowly. This will relieve her as well. Take care. Stay in touch. She will be fine, inshaAllah.

My baby cried 12 to 15 hours a day everyday until she was about 5 months old. She still cried a lot but it got better once I started her on solid food. My doctor acted like I was being dramatic but it turns out she has a soy, egg, and peanut allergy with milk intolerance. It took me going around my doctor and seeing a specialist at 14 mo to figure out most of her problem. There is also a something called Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders (EGID). My daughter was always vomiting and crying, even when I was nursing her. The other common problem that causes the constant crying is a stage called Purple Crying. Researchers aren't 100% sure what causes it, but they do outgrow the stage at about 4 months. I know it is hard and frustrating, but you know your baby and if you sense something is wrong, push for answers. I hope

It could be anything in her environment...Is she too hot or too cold? Does she have gas belly troubles? A little yogurt mixed in their drinks helped our sons' tummy troubles.. Sometimes they cry because they are overtired. Or maybe something is too noisy, or maybe there is not enough noise-try soft music to soothe her.. Or a pacifier?

She might be experiencing colic. Sometimes using some baby lotion/oil and giving your baby a gentle massage can help. I used this on my sons and it was really a hit or miss... but there was days when it really helped and I felt a little relief. You can massage arms, tummy, legs... and look for cues... she will let you know if she doesn't like the amount of pressure. Good luck!

My oldest cried like that and needed an adjustment from the chiropractor. Consider your options and choose carefully.
Another thing, if you are nursing your child baby might be allergic to something you are eating. An elimination diet can help you find out what. My second child screamed every night from 11pm to 4am. Turned out that she is allergic to milk. When I cut it out of my diet she did great. If baby is on formula she might be having a reaction to the formula. Look into other options. Hope everrything is resolved soon!

My son had many problems including reflux but he has over come that now and is doing well.it's just his crying since september2010 he's just cried for me and now he's nearly 2 the tantrums have started so it's not getting easier he is just never satisfied with anything I do. He doesn't hardly cry for my husband which is good but he does have a bad temper!

Oh and to add a comment - someone made a post that said "absolutely do not take your baby to a chiropractor" that is just plain rubbish. I have an absolutely wonderful chiropractor that I took my daughter to from the time she was just a few weeks old. He was absolutely great with her and never charged me a dime. Chiropractors can be very good for infants, just make sure to get a recommendation from another parent or health professional.

My darling daughter (now 23 months) suffered from reflux and also cried and cried all of the time. How does she sleep? Poor sleeping can be a really good indication of reflux. Contrary to what people might tell you it is not "normal" for a baby to constantly cry. Talk to your doctor, and if he or she isn't helpful and you are still concerned get another opinion. It took us several doctors and finally a night in the ER to get our daughter diagnosed and treated and I am so glad that I trusted my own instincts and persisted until we found the help we needed.

Make sure your baby is getting enough sleep because if she is restless it will be harder for her to fall asleep even if she is sleepy, so look for the sings like yawning, lazy eyes, or if she rubs her eyes a lot she is def sleepy. And remember its only been 3 weeks, she will accustom to you and you to her soon.

Have u tried swaddling her maybe she's having a hard time adjusting to not being in tight quarters anymore.. My baby used to cry n wouldn't sleep for more than like an hr at a time in her bassinet but would sleep fine in her carseat then someone pointed our to me that the carseat is more snug than the bassinet n suggested rolling 2 blankets n putting them on her sides as well as swaddling her n from then on she slept just fine.. I know u said its during the day that she's crying but maybe that would help..

if she is crying after she's awake sure she is hungry try to feed her on time atleast every 2 and half hour don't lett her hungry her stomach will be empty until she will be 3 monthes let her have her stomach every 2 hrs try with this and burb her properly

I would 2nd the suggestion to get a sling. She probably does have reflux so definitely get her checked asap but having her in a sling, comforted by mamma's warmth, heartbeat and movement will help her a lot. The upright position will stop the acid coming up her throat so much and will ease her symptoms also. I would recommend a ringsling or a wrap. these are perfect for newborns as they support the baby in the correct position. Stay away from structured carriers (e.g. babybojrn) because these don't keep the baby's hips in the right position. www.thebabywearer.com is a great site for information and buying 2ndhand slings (these have been worn and washed so often are softer and 'broken in'). There are so many types of sling and different learning curves to using them so this site can be a big help. I found the stretchy wrap (eg. moby) to be fab for newborns but you need to learn how to put it on. I found it kept the baby so secure to me. the ringslings are so easy to use also but I personally preferred it when baby was a few months older (and right into toddlerhood)..
Also the suggestion to swaddle is a good one as the baby feels more secure but if she does have reflux then she will have pain regardless, especially when lying down.

I agree with Pam. It could very likely be a reaction to your own diet. If not, could be that she smells you and thinks she should be crying for something. I had that experience with my first born - he refused to sleep or keep quiet when I held him cuz he thought I should be feeding him. I'd pass him on to my mother-in-law or some other family member, and he'd settle down and go to sleep. Have you asked other people to try settling her? Don't take it personally if it seems your girl won't be comforted by you.

Mine cried all the time too and then I found out that I was eating strawberries and some of the wrong foods and she was having terrible stomach aches. I gave her the baby gas medicine and watched my diet and she turned into a different baby. She never cried after that!

Maybe it's because of abdominal distention. Lightly pat your childs tummy and listen if it sounds like a drum. what I do is apply a little amount of manzanilla oil over my daughter's tummy. Hope it helps! :)

I had the same problem with my daughter. She was tongue tied and suffered for collic. You should see a lactation consulant in your area. hope this helps :)

That sounds beyond a ' little normal crying '. Trust yourself !!! She is too young to be doing it for attention. Crying is the ONLY way for her to tell you something is wrong. Get with another momma, or doctor and look at possible causes. Like gas, formula or breastmilk, colic. She is telling you something is bothering her.

my son had a issue similiar and it was colic crying painful gas. until myvdoctor swiched his formula from fegular enfamil to enfamil nutramgen it stinks but literally cured him in 2 days literally he had a milk allergy

I'm sure it's been said, but I'm saying it to. Doctor! There are many reasons your baby would be crying, the LEAST of it is because he is simply a baby! It could be gas, constipation or reflux. If it's reflux (my son had it), babies will start to eat and then get upset and cry. There may be lots, LOTS, of spit up, and it all gets worse when you lay the baby flat on his back. Docs can help with that, my son was on PrevAcid and he was like a whole new baby! If your baby is formula fed, it can be worse, or if you're nursing you eating dairy can make it worse. For formula, try the Enfamil for gassy babies (My pediatrician recommended it if we wanted to use formula instead of breastfeeding). If it is just gas, try Mylecon or Gripe water, it helps relieve the gas pressure and helps them burp. Massaging the tummy in a small circle can help too (it also can help with constipation). Working the legs can help to, moving them to the tummy and back, works on both as well. Again, go to the doctor, even if you feel "foolish" for running to the doc for everything, they expect it from first time moms. You are not the only one calling. Good Luck!

You have my sympathy. All three of my kids have been like that. I know how heartbreaking it can be. Hang in there, it will pass eventually. I agree that you need to get her checked out by a doctor and rule out reflux or any other health issues. If she is given the all clear then here are some things that can help. Babies at around 3 weeks enter a new developmental stage and become more aware of their environment. This can be overwhelming for them so that is why a lot of babies will cry alot from around 3 weeks to approx 3 months. Reducing stimulus, making sure they don't get over tired, swaddling, white noise, rocking and patting can all help. If it is colic and you are breast feeding eliminating all dairy from your diet has been shown to help some babies. I would steer clear of most of the pharmacy wind remedies. Many contain sugar, alcohol and artificial sweetners. Not what your babies poor little tummy needs. All the best, try and enjoy her and remember that it is all worth it in the end.

Make sure you are not over feeding her. Lots of times, a baby thinks they are hungry cause they have gas and don't know the difference between hunger and gas pains. Feeding any earlier then scheduled should be avoided. If she has gas, feeding her will just make it worse and last longer. Make sure you get her burped really good and also try some leg to belly exercising. Just lay her on her back, move her legs up to her belly a few seconds and then back down. Helps the gas to move if it needs to come out that end :-) I'm sure all is fine, this is pretty normal. The digestive system has to learn how to work. And mom, when you're tired, it's okay to let her cry a bit, if you can take it.

It's best to let her doctor know. It could be something medical or it could be just normal for her. How well does she sleep? Do you swaddle her in a blanket to make her feel more secure?

I agree that it has to be reflux or colic. My son who is now a year old spent the first six months of his life crying his eyes out. It was horrible for me as a parent because I felt helpless. I tried colic calm which is a natural gripe water you can get at local supermarkets or pharmacies and that worked a little, I tried water and ginger ale but that still didn't help that much...hang in there it will get better when she grows out of it! Also it helped when my pediatrician changed my sons formula to soy.

Is she sleeping fairly well for at least an hour? More than likely she is fine. I still have nightmares from 26 yrs ago w my oldest son - did the same thing. At 6 wks he transformed into a lovely child. Swaddling is def. good for the sleeping part. wake time: slings are great! have you tried white noise? a swing? every child is diff. - keep working at it and know that "this too shall pass". sleep when baby sleeps you've probably heard this a million times. but right now all you need to do is take care of baby... it'll get better.

My granddaughter was the same way. She had acid reflux.. Medicine put a stop to that--she was a completely different baby---See a doctor. Babies cry for a reason--she is in pain!

if she is breast fed watch what your eating both my girls are allergic to dairy bub 1 cried constantly after feeds and rarely settled when down after 2 weeks i put her on cows milk based formula and 4 days latter onto soy within 24hr she was perfect no more crying. bub 2 is breast fed and i stopped consuming dairy after 1 week as that cry began with her im still feeding at 6 mths and have begun soy formula in foods she is an angle with sleep and only wants normal attention. PLEASE CHECK YOUR DIET OR CHANGE FORMULA Hope it gets better :)

Oh, another possible remedy is neonatal probiotics for her little tummy. My baby girl had terrible gas and the probiotics helped immensely. I used Biogaia. Not cheap but well worth it!

I would have her checked for a urinary tract infection asap. Carry her in a baby carrier close to you, she may need to be close to you to feel secure.

Are you formula feeding ?? If so she most likely isnt agreeing with the formula weather it be the milk base, soy base or what have you! Talk to your doctor!! Also if your breastfeeding maybe she isnt getting enough ? Could have stomach problems and colic

What Julie said about the reflux could be right too. My nephew had reflux because he was born with the umbilical cord around his neck.

see doctor i found out my son had reflux after taking him to the hospital about ten times very frustrating and upsetting, he was a lot better after being put on AR baby milk and zantac medicine

My daughter was like that until she turned 7 months old. She was a colic baby. Give her some gripe water and if she drinks formula instead of water use fennel tea. It was very helpful for mine. Just be patient, now my daughter is almost 8 months old, she's much better always happy and start taking naps. Be strong better days will come.
