the routine is that we settle down and have an easy snack with some milk (does not seem to be an issue) up to bed, 3 stories and a couple of songs. He is continually stalling and getting up...please help

Thanks for the tips...we are going to try a reward system...some stickers, little animals, etc...just cheap trinkets, hoping that will help...

right on Veronica very smart.. Jenna-it's not wise to use food as a reward or punishment. Amanda I concur, however Debbie, you need to be firm with him. Not harsh just firm and don't give in. Once he knows which buttons work, he will continue to push them as long as he can. Keep up the good work with the routine. Stand your ground, Bed time is bed time.

Keep the routine; your doing great. Just keep up what you are doing. It is a phase and he will grow out of it. It is all about testing limits.

Well, my son is 3 1/2, and he used to do the same thing, and every once in a while he tries to pull it off again. :) But yeah, I think you're doing the right thing with settling down and stuff.. Stay consistent with having him stay in bed once you've put him down tho.. The more times he gets up today will probably be added by one more tomorrow. :) Sometimes not letting him have his snack the next night because he didn't stay in bed might help.. as a reward system. :) He's easier to deal with now. I think the older they get the harder it is to train them. :) Hang in there.. stay consistent, (not an easy thing to do but well worth the effort) and soon he'll be staying in bed on his own. :)

My son started this too about a month ago (he'll be 3 in march). I've discovered I had to take away his afternoon nap. If he doesn't go down for a nap by 11-11:30am then he doesn't get one. And on the days of no nap, he goes right to bed at bedtime.

hi debbie, this hasnt happened to me yet and i hope it wont lol i also have a 3yr old boy if this happened to me i might try and reward him sleeping eg say to him if u go to sleep for mummy in the morning when u wake up we can have a special me and you day at the park.. or something that ive tried successfully before on a couple occassions when he didnt want to go to bed (because he has a new little sister tahlia) ive bought him to bed and said 'ill be back in a min just need to go and feed/change tahlia's nappy and then ill come back' hes fallen asleep waiting, hope this helps and he starts sleeping for u again!
