My 4 1/2 year old daughter just started wetting her pants again. Sometimes twice a day. I am hoping it's just a phase. She could be just feet away from the bathroom and have an accident. I am tempted to take her to the doc, but don't want to freak her out. Any thoughts?

My daughter is now 7. When she was 4, she began having accidents too. It just so happened to be summer too. I tried to be as patient as possible, especially when I had a friend whose daughter was doing the same thing. The phase definitely passed. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that she was so active that she didn't want to stop to go to the bathroom. So she just held it until it was too late to make it to the bathroom.

Someone else told me that if a child is going through a developmental phase (learning some new things), they can have more accidents because they aren't paying enough attention to their potty due to paying so much attention to the new things they are learning.

My four year old did the same thing while at preschool. Her teacher told me about the potty fairy. If she was dry all day and night (she was still in pull ups at night) then there was a small (dollar store) prize in the bathroom when she woke up. We have had one night time accident and no more day time one in the past 9 months. I will say that she started wetting herself right after a round of antibiotics and may have developed a yeast infection, but continued for a while after it had all cleared up.

I had a lot of trouble potty training my daughter who is now 4. She would do great for a while and then go completely back to wetting her pants. She did it to me so often I got so frustrated. I didn't do anything about it at the time, just figured it was a phase. She started getting alot of bladder infections and we found out she had a reflux problem and had to have a procedure done to fix it. This was causing her infections and why she was wetting all the time. We also found out her bladder is bigger than normal so she can hold it forever and then she ends up waiting too long and would go in her pants. None of this may be the case with your child and it might be just a phase but my advice would be to get her checked out. It might be nothing but at least you would know. Good luck with everything!

My daughter's doing the same thing. It seems like it only happens when she's too busy (like when her siblings get home from school) and she doesn't want to stop to go on the potty.

I had things similar with my daughter happen on two separate occasions across a year or two. Has there been any 'change' in her life; even if its good or bad? I put the two occasions I referred to down to an involuntary stress-reaction to the change - one being the birth of her little brother and the other when we moved house. It didn't last for too long though and with happy encouragemetn and patience, everything went back on track quite quickly.
