my son is very sweet and bright and mostly well behaved. but today in his class he through a major tantrum over not getting his way. this is not the first time. it is very disturbing. when my husband and i take away his privledges he throughs another tantrum at home and sometimes throws things. i'm very concerned.

Unless he was being really violent towards other children or some other extreme behavior (like theft), I'd try to just let the school handle the problems at school. I'd talk about them with him, of course, and talk about appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, but it sounds like punishing him for events at school may be backfiring and just making things worse at home.
You say he is sweet, bright, and mostly well behaved, so maybe try focusing more on reinforcing THOSE behaviors and focus less on the tantrums.

So when he acts like this at school, exactly what are they doing? I think you need to discuss it with them. I am not a believer in punishing a child for their behaviour at school if the school has already implemented discipline of some sort. School issues should stay at school unless they feel the need to involve the parent, in which case, they should contact you to discuss a co-operative behaviour management plan. But punishing your child for the tantrums he is throwing at school, when the school might actually be managing it, is, in my view, unnecessary. Sure, discuss it with him, but don't add on additional punishment.

His school is all about positive reinforcement. They work with the students on helping modify bad behavior by time outs and avoiding triggers certain kids my have.
