My 9 month old is gagging on textured foods...

I told the Dr. about this and he said if it continued, than we would have to see a speech pathologist. He is fine with the stage 2 foods, but any kind of 'wet' food with texture (green beans, soft chunks of carrots, even the brown rice cereal that has a few more chunks than the multi-grain or oatmeal). He has his two center bottom teeth, and is working on his top two right now. He has no problems feeding himself the dry 'puffs'. He also seems to have somewhat of a 'behavior' (the Dr. thinks its a behavior, I'm supposed to take video and e-mail it to him) where he jerks his head and arches his back and straightens his body....even when he's still hungry. He'll usually have no problems taking more food after this fit. These two things seem to be completely separate issues. He had reflux, but this he has grown out of and cannot explain these problems because reflux happens hours after eating, not during. At times, with the textured foods, he gags so much that he'll throw up his entire dinner. And if I offer these foods BEFORE the rest of his dinner, he'll get upset and won't want to eat at all! Anyone else dealing with any of these issues?

Quoting Lindsay:

Thank you all for your help! I kind of figured that he just wasn't ready, but when the Dr. said the words 'Speech Pathologist' and 'Behavior' I freaked out!

some baby's don't start eating solids untill they are a year old. nutritionally it is needed at that age and not before. your son just needs more time. your a good mom taking him to the doctor to get it sorted.

Stick with nontextured foods until your MD can do further investigation.

My daughter went through the same thing. She was fine with stage two's, but anything with the smallest chunk in it would cause he to gag and throw up eveything she ate. I was told that it just takes some longer to adjust to solid that others. Let your child feed himself as much as possible, even if its messy. It takes a while but it will end.

I had this same problem when my youngest was 9 mths old. He is almost 11 mths now and I just switched him to eating the foods that we eat. He was also my 4th child so I was comfortable to go ahead and switch him. I just cut up his food into smaller bites and made sure that it was soft enough for him to chew. My doctor said that I could even start giving him small bites of meat as well. I also made sure that he was still getting enough formula or breast milk also. I know that he still needs that more than anything else right now.
