my best friends brother had this, her mom took 2 half dollars and soaked them in some alcohol or peroxide and let them dry then just took some bandage tape and taped them over his belly button. and it went away. and kept it from getting worse cause straining and crying can make it worse.

If you are ever alarmed about anything with your child...GO TO THE DOCTOR! Why you would choose to post to a parenting message board looking for advice is beyond me. If you child is in distress and you see something that is unusual... call the doctor immediately or go to the ER. We would much rather you tell us about your experience AFTERWARDS than look for a diagonsis here.

My sons belly button was sticking out and it scared us too.

It should correct itself soon, we use a round cover for a bottle and some cloth tape and it helped keep the hernia in and that seemed to make him more comfortable.

My 9 month old daughter has an umbilical Hernia and i didnt notice until the clamp came off at about 1-2 weeks old. The midwifes certainly never advised me even though really you could tell it was going that way.

A lot of people say they go away on their own but my daughters hasnt and it is very large when she cries or strains.

The one thing i worry about is she wont lie on her tummy to learn to crawl, she just cries, not through pain just cause she hates been laid on her tummy.

I certainly dont see any impprovement at all and am expecting her to have the op at some point.

My son had that as well, its a hernia. My sons doctor said will go away on its own but before it does it usually get bigger. And he also said to not push it in or cover it with something that could push it in then that could be dangerous.

my son had the same thing but it eventually went away. had to deal with a lot of drama from family, who thought innies was the thing. wanted me to tape it down and surgery and blah blah blah. it did go down.

My daughters belly button also stuck out, she's now four and its not an outtie but its not an innie either. It's weird, its an innie, but right in the middle there is a piece that sticks out. Doctor said it's just the way she is... she keeps asking me why her belly button is so different, i don't want to admit it but it really does look like a strange little belly button, lol.

I was also concerned about my son's belly button sticking out. My doctor told me that it was a hernia and it should go away. I would still have your doctor check it out, but I'm sure he'll be finel. I remember feeling that same way!

my son had one too, from crying so much, he was colic, it did go away, looks perfectly normal now. didn't take too long before it went down either.

I agree that if you are worried about anything, then you should make an appointment with her doctor. If she was in distress then maybe at the time you seen it and she was uncomfortable then take her to the E.R. It might be a hernia and might not be. When I saw my daughters, it was really sticking out there and I mean really out there, I made an appointment and it was an umbilical hernia but I am not saying that is what it could be. I would call her doctor and make an appointment immediately. Good luck and hope all works out for you. Keep us posted..

My daughter, who is going to be 7 on the 30th had this as well.
As others have said, it is called an Umbilical Hernia. The Dr.s said that this usually goes away on its own - however, my daughter's did not.
I was told to wait until she was 5 to see if it went away on its own.
Once she was 5 it still was not gone, but the Dr. said that if it did not bother her that we should just leave it alone.
It started bothering her last June (2008). I took her to the Dr. and they did surgery. She was very sensitive for several months as there were like 5 layers or so that had to be closed up.
It was an outpatient procedure and she is now fine - and has a cute little 'innie' belly button.

My daughter's belly button stuck out really bad when she was younger, but now you can't even tell. My twins were six weeks early, but my son's wasn't. My daughter was the smaller of the two though so we think that had something to do with it. Now however both belly buttons on my twins are fine and they are 10 months old.

It's a hernia, and is very common. When they get upset it will get bigger. My oldest (now 11yrs) had one and still has an "outie" because of it, but there should be nothing to worry about. Just remind your pedi to check it out at each regular check-up.

My now 20 month old son also had this. I started to notice it when he was about 10 weeks old. I noticed it got bigger and bigger time until it was about the size of a cherry. It was there for a while then it did go away on it's own by the time he was 10 months old. It doesn't cause pain, but do have the Dr. check it! I was concerned that my baby's belly button was sticking out. The doctor told me it was an umbilical hernia, and like Jess said, they usally heal on their own. Also, now he has an "outie" belly button- that is very cute, my other 2 children didn't have hernias and they are both "innies!" LOL...

Hi!

My son had the same thing when he was first born!

it'a called an Umbilical Hernia. His belly button was sticking out also. They said it's VERY common and doesn't cause any pain. It usually goes away on their own. My son's went away by the time he was 4 or so months. They said if it doesn't go away by the time they're nearing kindergarden then they'll operate. But they said it's very rare to have to operate on the hernia because it tends to go away on it's own.

I'd still have your Dr. take a look at it, just to make sure everything is going okay with it =) but no worries, its common and it'll go away!

hope this helps a little.
