Horrible diaper rash

My child has horrible diaper rash from diarrhea. I called her doctor he said it could last up to a week, not to change her diet and to use extra thick ointment such as Vaseline. We are using Vaseline now and we tried corn starch based powder and Desitin. Any other suggestions would be helpful. She is in so much pain she cries so hard and I can hardly hold her down changing her. I feel terrible every time we change her diaper.

Has she been on an antibiotic, if so they can get a yeast infection that looks like a horrible diaper rash, is so use the mylecon yeast cream like a diaper rash cream will clear it up in a few days.  My daughter use to get rashes so bad her skin would peel off this worked wonderful.

my daughter had the the  same prob as a baby.......the health nurse i phoned at the health link number, told me to give her yogurt. because what is causing the diaper rash is not only her poop but the urine too. the yogurt will balance out the ph levels in her bowel movements as well as the urine.  trust me it works. everytime my daughter got a rash, i would give her yogurt, with that and the diaper cream, with in 24 hrs it was clear.

Hi Stacey,

Both of my children have diaper rash problem.I was told about this..It does work.First was out the wipes with warm water. Then make this butt paste as i call it.Its made of equal parts of all..First you need your doctor to call in a script for Nystatin Cream USP,100,000 units per gram...After you get this you also need desitin and Antacid Liquid,Maximum Strength..Just mix all equal parts of each in a container..Put it on a few to everytime you change her diaper..If you want put extra desitin over the butt paste you just made..I try to change their diaper every hour to two till they clear up...Plus a nice warm oatmeal bath from Alveno also helps..Good Luck!!!Hope this helps it does for my kids..

Oh that's the worst, sometimes it just happens so fast. What really worked for us was, and I know this is a lot of work but it clears it up really fast. Washing the butt every time they poop with warm water and gentle soap, pat dry then put Balmex on the rash, then keep them in cloth diapers. If she cries when you put water on her rear, try squeezing warm water in a stream from the wash cloth. The Balmex clears up almost any rash overnight! I felt that sometimes the Vaseline just didn't work. I just bought a bunch of cheap cloth diapers at Target and threw them out when they were really bad. I know that's terrible but whatever I'm not perfect;) This really worked like a charm. The key is washing though really.

My Daughter had this issue as well and I used Tripple paste it is thebest ointment. I even use it from time to time on her and she is 6 for things like chaffed legs it works great. I also agree with theidea of leaving her diaper off. with my daughter I would take the diaper off and and have her wear underwear for a bit that way if she pees the panties will catch it and it won't get all on the floor.

I always change from cow's milk to soy when the children get diarrhea, stops the diarrhea quiclky. I used a Rx ointment that is added to Aquaphor ointment and then they microwave it help the medicine combine to the ointment. I can't remember the name of it but it is a medicine used for cholesterol. you might want to ask the pharmarcist.

Hi Stacey,

Mix Vaseline and Mazina (which you use in the kitchen) into a thick paste and put that on the rash.  It works beautifully.

Aquaphor Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment.  It worked great for my daughter.  Boudreaux's(spelling?) Butt Paste was recommended to me.  I found it hard to clean off and went back to the Aquaphor. But, to each his own. I believe in A & D ointment for some rashes, too.  Good luck.

Try Flanders Buttocks Diaper Rash Ointment - 4 Oz they have it on amazon...CVS is supposed to have it also. My son went through the same thing when he had toddler diaherrea and Flanders was the only thing that worked for him, his doctor gave us a sample and I ordered it online.  Good Luck

Vaseline worked wonders for our little guy - put it on really, really thick and make sure their bottom is dry before applying. Also - there are some foods that really seemed to cause bad diaper rash with our baby - applesauce was one of the surprising ones! Good luck - I know how sad it can be - I was in tears, too when I had to change our baby with diaper rash.

I agree with all the ointments but my adivice would be when wiping your baby use a soft cloth like the baby washcloths..hey we all know the laundry is gonna get done anyway : ) the wipes may be stinging even if the say they are for sensitive skin. A warm soft washcloth worked very well when my son had a bad rash.

As silly as this sounds it works BELIVE me. Scorch some flour in a frying pan just enough to brown it, and use it instead of the cornstarch. I had teething twins and this was a Godsend trick.. I promise you it will work in a day. It is an old southern remedy.. Good Luck

something similar to corn starch powder is just ordinary flour, I have seen it used overseas as simpler and cheaper way of helping to heal the rash, however I have not tried it. My tested remedies were the following creams : SUDOCREM and PENATEN and was happy with both, they contain zinc which seems effective. From time to time I also buy aveeno bath sachets with oatmeal just to keep the skin of my daughter soft overall.

I run daycare and have my own children. I always use Aquafor and no whipes of any kind just a mild soap (like baby shampoo) and let the air dry as much as possible.

Ask your doctor for Nystatin cream. It is a prescription and works wonderfully. One of the hospitals I used to work at, we would put it on our patients who are on bedrest. So when my doctor prescribed it I was questioning it a little. But I was wrong. It was Amazing. Put it on everytime u change ur baby's diaper and it should be better in a few days.

I would wash her bum with water in the sink.  That will help with the pain.  Keep on top of changing her diaper, the less time she is in a messy diaper the better.

Hi! Do you have an Osco drug there? If not go to any pharmacy & ask for a butt paste or one with zinc in it.our osco here (closed now) had a pharmacist who made his own diaper rash ointment it was awesome...

Vaseline works wonders when it comes to protecting the skin, but I found that it did nothing to heal the skin. My daughter has very sensitive skin and when I couldn't find anything to work on a rash, my cousin recommended an over the counter ointment called Calmoseptine Ointment. It's not made for specifically for children's diaper rash, but it's amazing how well it works! It's about $7 at Wal-Mart, just ask at the pharmacy. Some Wal-mart pharmacies carry it and some have to order it. It can be used for about any sore. Another great thing to try is Eucerin Aquaphor Ointment.

The best thing I ever found that worked on my son was DRC (Diaper Rash Cream). Found at Walgreens and Walmart. Inexpenseive and easy to find. Saw a drastic improvment in less than 12 hrs from a bleeding mess. Good luck!!

Unfortunately, you will just have to keep doing what you are doing. I do suggest that you use a warm washcloth when changing her diaper instead of wipes. Stop using the corn starch. It could cause problems all of its own. I also would let her stay in a warm bath for a while. I know that the doc said not to use things like vaseline or butt paste but I would.

Hi  Stacey,

I know what u'r going through becuz I went through the same thing over 23yrs. ago when my first daughter was born.  I used everything that u are using now, but I found using Vaseline and a box of regular corn starch really helped her.  Believe me, I felted for my daughter and I feel for u becuz I know what u'r going through.  The only thing was my daughters was so bad it was eating at her skin.  I was angry becuz her father left her sitting in a wet and poopy diaper for over two hours and he never bother to change her.  So when I got back from shopping, I washed her up with a warm wash cloth, just caked on the vaseline and poured on the corn starch.  I did that for at least three days and it really cleared up.  But as Lauren Eckert said, keep it dry before applying anything and use a warm soft wash cloth to clean her with.  I also use to put her in a warm bath with nothing in the water and she seemed to like that too and I would just let her sit for as long as she wanted or could stand it.  I hope that helps u out too.

I found that using things like balmex and desityn usually made my daughter's diaper rash even worse (she and I both have very, very sensitive skin). I found a long time ago since I couldn't use things like neosporin on cuts and scrapes because it would make them worse, that I could use vitamin e ointment (usually found at gnc, but is basically a petroleum jelly with vitamin e - the vitamin needed for healing). I tried it on her bad diaper rash and it worked even better than the vasoline. Also, I would put her in the tub, at least twice a day to help cleanse her better. And cut down on juices.

I would add some baking soda to a nice warmbath and let them soak for some extra time.  Don't be afraid to add too much, it makes the water very soothing for their rash.  then when drying off just dry completly and  let air dry for as long as possible without them having an accident.  The doctor always told me to do the BRATS diet when they have diarrea that seems to work- Bananas rice applesauce toast.  These are all pretty binding and not too heavy.  Good luck!

My son had a very bad diaper rash from diarrhea when he was 6 weeks old. the best thing to do it use a thick ointment. I prefer Desitin. When u are changing the diaper, and after you wipe, let it completely dry, apply the ointment, and put on the diaper. My sons rash was gone in 4 days of doing that consistently.

In addition to any cream, also add some Epsoms salts to the bath water and allow time for some good soaking. It will help with the diaper rash as well as smooth the skin. Also allowing air to heal will help. Running around for a while without a diaper will help the whole process.

try aquaphor by eucerin it is in a tub. It is similar to consistency as vaseline but works much better, Also try using a wet cloth to wipe instead of baby wipes, they can aggravate the rash and keep it from healing, good luck

We used Neosporine. My son would immediately break out is sores after a soft bowel movement, no matter how fast we changed him and they were open sores, like blisters. It was the only thing that worked without him screaming & it worked great! You could then apply vaseline or the like over it to get extra protection.

good Luck!

Not all diaper rashes are the same... two of my kids used to get yeast rashes when they were sick.  These rashes cannot be treated with the normal, over-the-counter stuff and may need a special cream prescribed by the doctor... they are often very red and very raw.  Good luck!

Give your child plenty of naked butt time on a towel.  Skip using baby wipes. Instead, use a soft paper towel in warm water or a washcloth.  When the rash goes away, it is ok to use the wipes again.  I found that combining the Butt Paste with a Calandolin ointment worked wonders on my daughter.  California Baby and Hyland's both make an ointment.  It is all natural and safe to use everyday.  It is very soothing and will lesson the pain.

I am a pediatric nurse in a very busy clinic.  Try mixing an OTC triple antibiotic ointment with some desitin or A& D ointment and some Lotriman AF.  Keep it in a container with a lid and apply with each diaper change.  After your baby has a stool, clean her up with a warm wash cloth.  Pat don't wipe.  You may even use a spray bottle with warm water in it.  After you pat her dry put liquid Maalox on her bottom.  This will neutralize any acid from her stools and keep it from breaking down her skin.  You can rinse this off after 20 minutes.  A warm bath with baking soda in the water also helps alot.  Let her go without her diaper if you can.

Hi Stacey, I'm a pharmacist in Canada and for diaper rashes we always recommend Nystatin as it is an antifungal cream that will eradicate the infection. It is available without a rx here, but I'm not sure where you are from, you may need a rx from the dr.  The Nystatin is to be applied up to 4 times a day, after a diaper change, and should go on first, before any other diaper creams that you may use.  Hope this helps.

My baby had really bad nappy rash and vasoline didn;t work. If anything it made it worse. The only thing that I found that would fix it is canesten cream rubbed in really well, with a barrier of plain zinc cream over the top. Once the rash cleared up i continued to use the canesten cream for about a week or so and the rash healed well and has never come back. I only use plain zinc now as a barrier cream. I find it is the best.

To help avoid painful changes, try using just plain old warm water in a squirt (not spray) bottle and a very soft cloth to gently pat dry.

Leave her naked as much as possible, bath WITHOUT soap in the water , but maybe add a little ground oatmeal, as long as she is just sitting in it.

For a moisture barrier, I have always used plain old lanolin or Lansinoh (breastfeeding ointment). You can get it at WalMart or WalGreens or any grocery store and a tiny bit goes a really long way.

I would most dinfinately avoide anything with zinc oxide and maybe even try a little aloe gel or aftersun burn gel when she is naked.

Hope it is all getting better!
