my daughter doesn't wear her glasses because she says her eyes can just automatically focus without them. is this normal?

that's a really strong prescription for such a little girl. she should wear her glasses. i think shes straining her eyes alot to focus hard enough for everything to be clear it must take so mcuh effort. thats why there are eyebags. you should get advice from some other moms who are willing to reply. im not some eye expert. does she ever squint alot?

she is 7 1/2. i took her to the optometrist and she is -3.25 in one eye and -4.75 in the other. she still does not wear her glasses. when i asked her to try them on and look around, she read everything perfectly, also the same without her glasses. im really frusterated. she still tells me she doesn't even need them. ive recently been seeing eye bags under her eyes but she doesn't say anything to me.

With myopia (regular short-sightedness), glasses aren't to prevent the problem from getting worse, they're just to improve quality of life. My eyes will always get worse, that's just how they are. Most people's will. They've stabilized for now, and have since my early 20s, but it's not because I've been faithfully wearing my glasses, it's just that my body has stopped growing and changing, until I start getting older and my eyes get worse again.

She's in glasses because her eyes DON'T focus normally.

However, depending on age, her prescription needs may have changed, so it may be necessary for new lenses with a different correction.

Is it normal for a child to not want to wear their glasses? Yes, and unless the parents make it a "cool" thing, rather than an "uncool" thing, they will always think that way.

My recommendations: Get her to the opthalmologist. Have her prescription checked to see if any adjustments are needed. Next, start reinforcing that it's good to wear glasses, rather than letting her get away with not wearing them.

Because, sooner or later, if she requires correction, and isn't using it, she'll get worse, and eventually go blind. Yeah, it's not going tohappen tomorrow, but still...letting her ignore something that's going to affect the rest of her life (I've been in glasses since I was 8), is not OK. She needs to respect the fact that they're needed, and be responsible enough to wear them.

It could be that her eyes have changed so they don't match the strength of the glasses, or it could be that she's just making an excuse because the other kids don't wear glasses and she doesn't want to, either. If it's just short-sightedness and not a lazy eye, I wouldn't push the issue. Maybe get her checked out again. When she wants to see properly, she'll put them back on.

I got glasses when I was 9, but didn't really wear them except to whip them out of my backpack if I wanted to see something far away. When I was 10, we went on a trip to some beautiful mountains and I wore them all the time so I wouldn't miss seeing anything. After that I was used to being able to see clearly, and I haven't gone back!

How old is she? Why does she have them?

My oldest son has to wear glasses because his eyes don't focus properly. He can see without them fine but just needs them for a year or two to help. It took for the optometrist to explain if he didn't wear them now he would be stuck with them for the rest of his life.
