Your daughter is so young, I wouldn't give her anything but formula or breast milk! No drops or juice of any kind. My daughter had the same problem and I changed her formula to hypoallergenic made by Enfamil ( the orange can). Worked like a charm! Good luck to you.

I am a grandmother of 4 and a Mom of 3 sons. When my oldest was constipated, and he was alot, my Mom would take a sliver of ivory soap, very small, and wet it and insert it in his bottom. Then we would hold his bottom closed for about 3 or 5 minutes. The soap would soften his stool and would make him want to push. It is safe and worked alot for me. Lots of old remendies work the best.

I had the same problem with my son when he was an infant. Warm sugar water helped with the colic, and i used glycerine inserts/supositories for the pooping problem. Usually helped within 5 minutes. I was told by several ppl that it was normal for breastfed babies to not go for 5-7 days.....my son did nothing but eat and cry cause he was in so much pain. I wouldn't let it get that far.

I've read over some of the replies and some sound good but some are a bit frightening. I'd be scared to try anything that says not to use it until the child is 6 months old because the packageing says that for a reason. Don't mess with the mixture formula b/c the child could end up under nourished. My suggestion is to see your doc and find out what she or he has to say. My daughter started with constipation on the second day home from the hospital. We happened to be going for a check up on day three and they started us on the rectal stimulation as was descriped in anohter post. I would hold her legs up to her chest and my husband would stimulate the area with a thermometer. We did this every other day until she was 18 months when she was put on daily Miralax. We still had to stimulate about once a month. By age four, I was very concerned (an honestly a bit afraid of what the rectal stimulation was doing to her psyche) so we went to a gastroenterologist. Two years of testing and using every coaxing method possible and there was nothing physically wrong. Our best guess is that the spynxter muscle was under developed and while it developed she learned that it hurt to go potty so she just quite going. The longer she waited the more it hurt. Now at age 8 we have it all worked out and she is just fine. Good luck.

Quoting Pippa:
my daughter is 1 week and 2 days old and is very constipated she's also very stubborn with her wind i tried colic drops that just made her sick anything else i can do for either of these problems
My daughter had the same exact problem, at the same age. My pediatrician recommended putting dark Karo syrup in her bottles. 1 teaspoon per bottle. I did this with every bottle for 1 week, and then every other, every 2 ,etc. until she was having normal bowel movements. It's an old fashioned remedy, but it worked. You may want to check with your pediatrician. Also, they switched my daughter to a soy based formula (isomil). The iron is easier to digest with the soy.

My son was like that when I changed him from breastmilk to formula. My Grand-mother told me to put flectcher's castoral in his milk and it worked for us. You can buy it in Wal-mart, Target and Pharmacy. Just one or two drops in the bottle not all bottles just like 3 of them a day. Little drops!

Try any baby milk with soy! and dilute it more if it says 2oz. of milk use half or 25% water she is constipated because she can't drink regular milk in the can or powder so soy will work better!

Hi Pippa, my daughter suffered with terrible wind when she was tiny too. I was recommended Colief, its available on prescription (in the uk anyway). The feed is to be made up 4 hours in advance and the Colief added to it so that it can break down some of the enzymes in the milk. Hope this helps xx

My daughter was very constipated when she was an infant as well, oh I remember her colic time and to be constipated at the same time was tourture for her father and me and her! What seemed to work is a nice warm bath then we would just keep her in her onsie. try sitting down and laying the baby tummy down on your lap and gentley bouncing them. good luck!

I would say Gripe Water for the gas and either a glycerin suppository or diluted prune juice for the constipation, but dont use the supp. all the time because they will become dependant on it and not be able to go on their own.

Hello hun,
My little boy is now nearly five wks old i tried him with infacol and gripe water after a month old. But it never worked so i moved him on to dentinox u can get in from asda and i swear by it now. I also tried baby massage and moved there legs in slow mosion like riding a bike with out a nappy and that tends to let them get ride of there wind. But just watch if they she is consipated then she might she expoled after massaging her tummy by little boy did. I tend to give my little boy a massage an hour after every feed and it worked really quick and also helped with both colic and constipation. Also try giving her a 1oz of warn boiled water to help flush it through her system after every other feed. But hunni i was told not to worry to much and a baby can go upto a wk without a poo poo lol.
Hope she gets better but like i said my little one is great now he was subborn and first now he is a natral at both winds little piglet.
Gud luck katy xxx

Do you give her water at all? It helps. Put a little sugar in the sterilized water to give it taste, she wont gag. Also, exercise her legs as if she were riding a bike, it moves the gas and helps move the bowels. If that dont help, try cammomile tea (spelling?).
Congratulations!!!

Karo syrup and water works well for constipation, just put about 1 tbsp in 4 ozs of warm water. For winding, use a couple drops of pepermint extract with 4 ozs of warm water. These were two things I was never without when my kids were babies.

All of my four kids had constipation problems. When they were this young I would give them about a teaspoon of Karo Syrup (light or dark doesn't matter). These were per pediatricians orders so it wont harm the baby. As far as the colic, you may need to talk to her pediatrician about switching her to a more gentle formula. My daughter had colic so bad I would only get 2 hours of sleep a night. We had to switch her to Enfamil Gentle Ease. It worked wonders, but it does take a day or two to get in their system. Until it's worked you should try holding her stomach to yours. It helps ease the pain at least and she may not be as fussy. Good Luck.

HI, if she is constipated give her warm water with a little brown sugar, might sound weird and you might now want to give her the sugar cause she is so young but it did help my daughter! But dont give to often and to much cause then she might not want to drink her milk. Also try grip water!

Hi i hope this helps, i used to give mine just half an ounce of water. But dont give it to the baby just before or just after feeding. Try and do this around 2 hours before or after feeds.

My son is seven now, but he had the same problem. The Dr. told us that a rectal therm. may help get things going. Not To Deep! He also told us that it is a common issue with newborns that they just don't go and a week is when you should begin to worry.
DO NOT give apple , prune, or use any other juice since their digestive systems are to young to handle them. NEVER give a newborn a laxicative in any shape of form unless prescribed by the peditrican!

Honestly it worked! and for the colic have you tried lying him face down over your knees and rub his back? its meant to soothe them or something to that effect! I really feel for you cos its horrible when there screaming and nothing you do seems to work.

She's one week old!!!!!! She is a newborn baby, I have read that it is VERY unsafe to give anything but breastmilk or formula to a newborn. Are you truly convinced that she is constipated? A true indication of having constipation is if she passes some stool that is formed in a hard ball like a pebble. PLEASE call your baby's doctor before you give her any crazy concotions of syrup or sugar or anything else! Also, no baby has EVER died from needing to poop.

I have an 2month old and when she was about 2 or 3 weeks i thought she was constipated also. I spoke to her pediatrician and she informed me that it was no uncommon for infants to have no bowel movements for a few days. As long as she's having soiled diapers she should be fine.
My daughter hadnt had a bowel movement for two days and on the third day she had one.

Constipation-my husband and I gave our son some apple juice (watered down so it wouldn't be so strong.)
Crying- Watch DVD "Happiest Baby on the Block" My son would just cry and cry from about 10pm-2am. Watched this video did what it said to do he slept for a full 12 hours at 2 weeks. Doctor said his weight was great and he would wake up when he was hungry. Best movie ever! I was skeptical too but it is worth a try!
