What a cutie you have! For our baby girl we used apple-prune juice. Watered down half and half with water... it doesn't take much.... and she won't have a problem pooping any more. Annabelle used to go once a day, and if she went a day without going i used to just give her the juice so that she didn't get constipated in advance.... worked like a charm. Also we used to add an extra once of water to her formula bottle than normal..... and that helped alot too! GOOD LUCK!

Talk to your doctor. It may just be the formula you are giving the baby. Please don't put anything in the babbies bottom unless the doctor tells you too. My son was like that when he was first born and it was the formula, I had to use a suppository once on him and it was the most invasive thing I could ever do to a baby. Yes it worked but I did not like having to do that to my little guy.

First, I would make sure it's constipation.  Both of my girls seemed constipated when they were in their first month, but it is very common for babies to only have a bowel movement once a week.  If the stool is hard and round (pellet like), then it's constipation.  If it is runny, she isn't constipated and giving her things for it might only irritate a newly developing digestive system.  My girls both had fussy digestive systems.  I found the best thing for them was the "bicyle" legs.  I would softly push their legs in and out and then around in circles.  I would also rub their tummies in a circular motion a few times a day.  In a very short time, their digestive tracts were right on schedule.  My second baby was easier because I knew more of what was and wasn't wrong and had more patience that it was going to pass and she was going to be comfortable.  The first one was very scary and stressful because I was sure it was constipation, but the Dr. kept telling me it wasn't and that it was normal and would pass (I realized in time she was right).  If you cannot wait it out, please be very cautious with a rectal thermometer and make sure you don't use the older glass ones.  If it doesn't work, I would not try it again for some time as not to irritate her more.  Patience is the key, and I would suggest calling your pediatrician and asking before trying anything.

I would switch her bottles, I have found the Dr. Brown bottles to be the best, Yes there are a lot of pieces to clean but they prevented colic and for the constipation I use to use a little of the clear karo syrup about a teaspoon and that should help the constipation

I had the same problem with my daughter. I was a first time mom and it stressed me out so bad. Felt like such a bad mom because I couldnt fix the problem. When my daughter was born I tried to breastfeed but she got thrush in her mouth which then transfered onto me, very painful, so formula was the way we had to go. They put her on the formula with iron and that's when her consitpation problems started. The doctors told me to mix a little bit of prune juice with water, so we tried that and it made it worse giving her stomach cramps, but she still couldnt go. they then told me to use a rectal thermometer, which would make her go a little but not much. Next they said try giving her a tsp of dark karo syrup in her bottle, which I didnt understand but tried it anyway. Still nothing worked. Went back to the pediatrician office and come to find out the reason none of that worked was because she could not handle the iron in her formula. They put her on soy formula and the following day she was back to normal. So, you might want to ask about her formula being a problem. Long story I know, but wanted to share thinking maybe it would help u. good luck!!! She is 6 now and I have been through a lot with her, so if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. =)

Do not give your newborn anything other than breast milk or formula!!! It is unlikely that she is truly constipated, if you are really worried about it take her to her doctor. I would suggest a chiropractor thats treats all ages. Birth can be hard on their spine espically if she was in a bad position in the womb which will make her really fussy. You should help her get comfortable and hold her as much as posible during the early weeks, that will help her adjust to life outside the womb. Some babies do not handle stimulation well at first so if she's being pass around a lot from well wishers she may be stressed out.

If you're breastfeeding she may not go for days at a time (my boy's record was almost three weeks).  They use all the "stuff" from the breastmilk.

If she truly is constipated a bit of Karo syrup in the bottle will help.  Be sure you check with your pediatrician so they can keep on top of the problem.

If she's really fussy, an ipod while you are rocking her will keep you calm (so you can't hear her) and just hold her and don't take it personally

1 Tbsp. of Karo Syrup in each bottle and shake well  use until constipation is gone. The best because it is all natural, I asked the doctor because i was told not to use recently because of Bochalism from bees, But the doctor said that would be in old bottles of Karo syrup (over 1-2 yrs) so just make sure you use a unopened bottle of Karo for no risk.. It works GREAT and is all natural.

My daughter (who is breastfed) used to only have a bowel movement once a week and even went 10 days once without one. The doctor and health nurse both said that breasfed babies don't get constipated. She also seemed to have stomach cramps a lot and when she passed gas, she was VERY STINKY! She was also very fussy and had a hard time sleeping. Tried Oval drops and various other things. Thought she was colicky. I searched around online and one of the things I decided to try was to stop eating dairy products. Within a week, she was sooooo much calmer and was no longer stinky, yay! I can drink Lactaid (lactose free milk), which I like better than Soy milk. Also found out that there is no lactose in cheddar cheese which was a relief because I was missing all the things I used to eat, lol. After I stopped eating lactose, her bowel movements started becoming more frequent. She was going regularly every 3-4 days and sometimes more often. Now that she eats some food a couple times a day, she goes every day. If you are nursing, don't give her anything for constipation. Try eliminating things from your diet. The main one is lactose I think. Good luck.

glycerin inserts help a lot, and my daughter had such bad gas at that very same age, i used her carseat, and put her in the laundry room to try the washing machine (white noise) idea, and it seemed to put her to sleep and relax a lot.

i would turn the lights out and leave the door opened slightly so i could see her, and sit with her until she calmed down, atleast she got some much needed sleep as well.

i also got dr browns bottles, that are supposed to help with gas, they worked like a charm, it cut her gas down atleast half.

i hope this helps a bit.

Babies dont always go everyday, so I wouldnt say they are constipated. My daughter would go every 4 to 5 days...but oh when she did...look out. :) I dont know how the birth was, but if it was a c-section or a tramatic birth (forcepts used or suction) I would have your baby checked out by an Upper cervical doctor. My children were all c-sections and my husband is an upper cervical doctor.(specific form of chiropractic) he checked all of them moments after their birth and if they needed an adjustment he gave them one (its not forcful at all...its like checking the ripness of a tomato) anyway, they get checked every week (they have only had less than a dozen adjustment..all are under 3yrs old) and they have never had colic, ear infections, they have slept through the night since they were less than a month old, never had a cold....they have always been happy and healthy) People are always saying its just luck, but if its luck for all three, then we need to play the lottery... I truely believe in what my husband does. He just makes sure the body is the way it was designed to be in order for it to heal itself and work to the best of its ability. check it out.. Is she breastfed or formula fed?  If she is being formula fed, she needs to drink lots of water in between feedings to keep her bowels moving.

At your next well baby visit to the doctor, ask the doc also.  Not sure what's safe for you to use with such a young baby.

My daughter was constipated  from birth and after trying many things the best was diluted prune juice, I still giver her it now at 9 months old to keep her regular otherwise if you leave it too long then the stools may become very hard and very uncomfortable for the baby to pass. I also found rubbing her stomach gently in a clockwise circular motion helpful.

With my first daughter I had the same problem but it is said they can go 7 days without a bowel movement even though I do not agree with this so we gave her diluted apple juice and diluted prune juice to help her bowels move.  Don't give her too much maybe a ounce or two is what I would suggest.  Also make sure she is not receiving too much iron because that made my daughter constipated because she was receiving similac with iron, iron vitamin drops and breast milk so we found out that made her constiapted.  Let me know how it goes and good luck.  I am very sorry for your inconvience.

My daughter got really constipated when I would switch her to formula instead of breastfeeding. Once I "upped" her breastmilk intake it cleared up her constipation. However, once I stopped breastfeeding she became really constipated again. So I switched formula's from Similac to GoodStart this has helped alot. Hope your daughter feels better soon.

My little one will be a week tomorrow. They're not being stubborn with their toots or burps. They're still learning how to do this and sometimes it just takes longer to get them out. Also if you are breastfeeding she's less likely to burp as often as a formula fed baby. Mine burps sometimes after feeding but not always. Same with my 1st three... I breastfed them to to start with and after they switched to formula I noticed the difference, they had to be burped half through the bottle of they would spit up.
As for being constipated... she might, she might not. If she hasn't gone in two days then call your doctor, if she goes at least once in a day or two then there's no problems. Again, they are still learning and don't have complete control over these muscles, so while it seems like she may be if she's grunting or straining.. she's just learning! It's all new to her, can't expect them to just know right off the bat. =)

Anyways it did not stop until I used a supository and that was the last resort because he could not use the bathroom and would cry all the time after that he did not have a problem.

It's perfectly normal for very young babies not to 'go' for several days at a time - or to go several times in one day. So don't rush to the conclusion that she's constipated. 'Wind' is also a bit of an old wives tale - they either burp or they don't, they certainly don't have any control over it, so stubborness isn't an issue. Some babies just like to cry - if she's crying a lot, have her checked by the doctor just to make sure there are no other problems, but then just relax and let her get on with it. In another week or so she'll be doing something else to make you worry. I never found colic remedies worked - and I was always loath to give medication unnecessarily anyway. My son cried every night at 5pm, for about an hour. Why? No idea. Does he still do it? No. Why did he stop? No idea.
