I remember turning thirteen and suddenly hating spending time with my parents and being embarassed by them. If you can do a party that you don't have to attend (like being in another room or having an outdoor party while the grown ups are inside) it would probably go over well. Let her play the hostess. This time of year a pool party or slumber party outside would probably work out too. My daughter turned 10 this year and i know she wanted to have a less structured and adult run party so we baked up some cupcakes ahead of time and I let the girls sit around the table decorating their own with lots different frostings and sprinkles. They gossiped and decorated and nibbled cupcakes quite happily while I was in the other room with the baby. The mess was incredible, but they loved it!

is there a specific theme? i did a mardi gras for my daughter's 13th three years ago. i used OrientalTrading.com to purchase white face masks, feathers, beads and decorations. purchased paints from a craffts store and had the girls make their own masks to take home with them at the end of the day. if it's all girls, you can have them help make a king cake (any recipe on line), and whoever gets the baby in the cake gets a prize.

Wow, now that is a cool idea... I may have to steal that one :)

When I was 13 I had a dance at a hall. You see I have a twin brother, so he invited his friends and I invited mine. We ended up with almost 100 people there. It was so much fun.Certainly a birthday I will never forget. My older brother was the DJ, and my mom and 2 of her friends prepared the food. We had sandsiches, chips, pop, veggies and dip, and cheese and crackers. You get the idea just snack food.

How about a limo ride for a site seeing tour. It's comperable to taking them out for movie, pizza and decorating you're house.

Well my daughter thought she was too old for a "party" at 13 but what we did was take her and few friends to he mall (to spend her b-day money) and they got their pictures done together. Then we went to The Cheesecake Factory for dinner. They spent the night and entertained themselves after that. She had alot of fun though.
