She is 13 months. We've been giving her the slippy cup and all of a sudden she won't drink from it anymore. In fact she throws a fit every time we offer it to her. I had to give her a bottle last night because her urine was strong smelling and I was worried that she wasn't getting enough to drink. Any suggestions or tips? How much milk should she be drinking a day?

I would say its more important that she drinks liquids than drinks from the sippy cup. keep offering the cup but if she won't take it, I would just give her whatever she will drink from. Does she drink other things from a sippy cup? water?

My Daughter is 2 and still has her bottle at night and sometimes in the day time, i have 3 other daughters and they also had bottles at night untill the age of two, they have lovely teeth and settled better at night after having the bottle. I dont think it is wrong for you to give her it, would you rather a happy baby with a bottle or a baby that has a fit when you offer her the cup, the amount of milk they say toddlers should have is about 12 floz but skimmed milk should not be given to under 5's, you can give semi skimmed because it has similar amounts of protein and calcium it is how ever lower in vitamin a than whole milk, you could also try juice if she wont drink that much milk, hope its helped, good luck x

My daughter did the same thing and her pediatrician told us to give her yogurt and she loved it.

I would try making it choc. milk or water down her favorite flavor of juice. As long as she is getting something every couple hrs. My ped. dr. would tell me to try her on something new juice wise and if she liked it, let her go.

There are several things you can try. If you're giving her whole milk, try skim or 2%. You might also try giving her a different sippy cup. My oldest daughter was very attached to her bottle and paci for way too long - I introduced a suippy cup with a nipple like spout and that helped for daytime. Also, is she cutting teeth? You might try warming up the milk slightly - it may feel better in her mouth. I gave my girls skim milk (they preferred it to whole milk) several times a day but I also gave them gummy vitamins and foods with added calcium. Also try juice - it could be that she just doesn't like milk right now and pedialite is wonderful if you think she's not getting enough liquids. It's expensive though - juicy juice is just as good. And of course - she may just want her bottle. I've heard so much advice from this but I let my daughter keep her bottle unil she decided she was done with it. I did this simply because at night and at naptimes - she simply refused to sleep without one. My youngest daughter, however, threw her bottles away herself at about 8 months old - she wanted a big girl cup. They're all different and on different schedules. Hang in there - it'll work out!

Check with your doctor first about how much milk she should be drinking per day. Will she drink anything else out of the sippy cup? If so, give her that. If she is close to dehydrated (dark, stinky pee) then she needs to be drinking something. I did not use a bottle, but have friends who did, and some of their kids held on to the bottle for much longer than 13 months, at least at bedtime. So it's probably okay if she still gets a bottle sometimes for now. Maybe you should try a different liquid in the sippy and see how that goes. Good luck!
