My little girl is nearly 4, she will go to the toilet for a wee, but won't go for a poo unless i put a nappie on her, which i have to do at night time. So she will make her self wait untill then. any idears?

I gave my daughter a present every time she did for about a month and then switched to stickers. The presents were from the dollar store so it wasnt very expensive but it was fun.

Okay Tabitha,

So I am the "mean" mommy I guess.  My daughter peed quite early, but like yours, would not go poop on the potty.  She wanted to wear underpants and not a pull-up, but would poop in her underpants.  I cleaned it up for a while and would try to rationalize with her and ask her why she was wouldn't use the potty.  This did not work.  Finally, after cleaning soft poop out of her underwear for the last time, I knew what I was going to do.  The next time she did it, I made her clean her underwear.  Being a healthy eater, you can imagine how nasty that was, I made her use her fingers to get the mushy mess off her underwear and she responded, "mommy that is so gross", I responded, "yes dear, then why do you think I want to continue to clean it up?"  After explaining that she would be cleaning any accidents from that point on, she never pooped in her underpants again.

I had the same problem with my daughter.... she always waited until she was off the toilet until one day I decided to show her where it goes. I let her watch me dump the poo in the pot and then she got it.

Just a thought but try stopping the nappie and once she realizes she does not like to sit in her own poo she will get it. My child was the same way and she learned to poo in the potty last. They really don't like having it in their panties , don't give her a choice.

Our daughter (3) has been doing the same exact thing. We spoke to the MD. He suggested sitting her on the toilet about 15 to 20 minutes after she eats and then spend some time reading a book with her to encourage her to do "poops" or as she says "put a stick in the toilet"! Since she is often constipated she gets Metamucil (a spoonful) in her orange juice every morning. Life and sleep has gotten a whole lot better with these for us anyway!

My oldest son was like this. I started baby sitting. He saw another boy do it and it seemed to settle in with him. After that, I didn't even need diapers for him at night. I know it's frustrating, but making a big deal out of it will only reinforce it to your daughter. Don't worry - she won't graduate from high school in diapers. My son is 17 now and fully potty trained - so I can say that with confidence :)

If it makes you feel any better, have a talk with your pediatrician. He may be able to give you some advice that worked for other parents.

Hi,  I was just thinking maybe she is afraid she'll fall in if she sits long enough to go poo. Do you have a removeable child toilet seat? It may make her feel secure. I would buy her a mattress cover and not put a nappie or pull-up on her. To me it sounds like she understands what the toilet is for and it to sounds like she knows if she holds it in that at the end of the day she will get relief when you put that nappie on her so why go on the toilet. If she does not like to be too messy and has an accident she will want to try the toilet. In the video/dvd Potty Power she can see that other children go on the potty. Here is a site to go to for toilet training ideas too: www.pottypatty.com. It was featured on the show doctors and Jim Sears the pediatrician. My other thought is she trying to assert her independence lately? Do you have her sit on the potty on a regular schedule? Do you or can you see the cues as to when she needs to go poo? Then placing her on the potty. The key thing is consistency in getting her on the potty. Letting her know it was ok that she did not go poo, that it was good that she tried anyways. How long has she been training?

Tabitha,

My son was the same way. He was 3 years old and had been peeing in the potty for over a year but wouldnt go poopie until we put the diaper on him at night. I talked to the doctor about it for advice and she said "dont worry about it, when he's ready he will do it. dont make a big deal out of it and leave it out of any conversation you have with him." so we let it go and one day he couldnt wait until he got his diaper on and he ran to the potty and went and he has been going ever since. it happened just like that. my advice is not to even bring it up to her. when she's not thinking about it, it will happen. :o) good luck to you!
