My son had terrible eczema as an infant all over his body! I tried everything from expensive lotions, prescription creams, and watched everything that his skin came into contact with...with no luck. Finally, my husband's friend, (who manages a funeral home), suggested a lotion he used on his son. It's called "velvetone" and it worked wonders! It didn't "sting" and his skin was clear within days. My son, now 3, will request it still if his skin gets sun/windburned. The only place I've found it is the funeral home and I've gone back a couple times! Sounds weird...but stop by your neighborhood funeral home and see if they carry it!

My daughter's was horrible her first year. We minimized the bath time and gave her baths with Aveeno Colloidal oatmeal. As soon as we got her out, we would gently towel dry her, and slather her body with aquaphor. We washed all our cloths in natural detergents for sensitive skin. The climate can also affect things... too cold or too hot is not good, moderate temps and moist air is good.

My now 4 year old son has had eczema from about one year old, so has my daughter now 9 months, since birth.
I used both dermatologist and pediatrician prescriptions which works for a while, but after a while it only returns again and again and again.
I started to bath both the children with Rooibos Body Wash and after bath use the Rooibos Body Lotion. After about 2 weeks the eczema on both children started to improve. After a month both of of their eczema has dissapeared. ever since I bath them both with Rooibos and teh eczema hasn't returned after 4 months to date

Have you tried Shea Butter...I have terrible allergies & it works. Check out this website http://sheainstitute.com/. Look under training and education, then consumer awareness.
WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF SHEA BUTTER?
Shea Butter, the multi-purpose all natural vitamin A skin cream, is derived from the seed of the Shea tree. The cream is extracted and prepared without the use of chemicals. The best Shea Butter for skin use is prepared by cold press methods without use of added chemicals or preservative.

My 20 month old has eczema, he is biracial. We try to only bathe him about once a week and daily use a lotion called Aloe Vesta by ConvaTec. It works great. During flare ups we use the Hydrocortizone from the Doc. Cetaphil for baths and California Baby shampoo.

If you haven't already, try Elidel. It works wonders!! I used it for my son who had eczema as a baby and a few times here & there. Its a presciption cream so ask his dr about it first. My son is 8 now & haven't had a break out in years after I've used the Elidel. Good luck!

the last poster is right, most times eczema is mis-diagnosed and it is really allergies. Try switching to no-odor or no- dye detergent, take certain foods out of your sons diet for a week or so and see if it improves. Milk, wheat, gluton, and peanuts are commonly mis-diagnosed allergies. Also make sure to use a very gental soap like Aveeno or Dove.

I use ALL free and clear for laundry. I also recommend Cetaphil cleansers and lotion. My husband teases me that I should be their spokes person. We tried a ton of prescription ointments and doctor recommended lotions and creams before I found Cetaphil. It has helped everyone that I have suggested it to. Just try to apply it after every bath and once the eczema clears up...you only need to apply it when needed.

Hi Nancy,
None of my children have eczema, but mom does and my dad has psoriasis, not sure of the cream they use I just know it is the same and they added drops of the tea tree essential oil. I told them that when I put in my shampoo it cleared up my psoriasis. My mom's eczema is virtually gone along with my dad's psoriasis and have indicated they will continue to use the cream as a preventative measure. Tea tree oil can be found in many health food stores, start off with a few drops if it doesn't seem to be helping add a few more drops. I would put some cream in a separate container this way if it does not work for your child than you have not wasted a whole lot of cream.

My son had eczema, we used hyrocortizone cream 1% with 12 moisturizers. (I used the generic brand from stop and shop) it worked wonders. I used on my babys face twice daily, especially after his bath.. My pediatrician recommended i stop using it once it went away, and use it when it comes back again. The eczema looked so much better the next day, and it completely went away in 2 days..It did come back 1-2 weeks later, as the pediatrician said it may come back again..now his almost 4 months and his eczema free almost 2 months but i still keep the cream on hand.. =D I hope it helps..

Dairy does make eczema worse. We also learned to rinse the children off with the shower or clear water completely after a bath, everytime. Only use soap part of the time. Blot partially dry apply Aquaphor lotion until they are dry and the lotion is rubbed in. Be careful that clothes are rinsed really well also as the laundry detergent can affect it also. it also seems to be worse some times of the year. Make note of that and be very, very deligent about treating it every day.

my daughter has eczema and the doc precribed triamcinolone acetonide cream. it works very well. she also said to use only dove or ivory soap when she washes. no perfumed soaps or body washes. changing the soap, helped immedialtly.

my son has it also-all on his back and the back of his arms- and now you can't even tell he has it b/c of these things I did: 1. Baths can only be lukewarm and 15 minutes or less since excessive heat/water exposure causes dryness 2. I no longer use a washcloth on him all over-only on his face, bum and private area, use your hands for the rest 3. wash with Aveeno baby wash and follow up immediately after bath with Aveeno baby lotion. Hope this helps!

I use Dermarest and Claritin for my 5 yr old. He has allergy triggered ezcema...poor kid..its chocolate that sets him off. That combination usually works decently enough for him and the Dermarest doesn't sting and is not a steroid. You can get it at Walmart.

All of us have extremely dry skin. I've never been diagnosed because I haven't asked the dr about it, but I think it is eczema. We have found some releif in using moisturizing shampoo in a scrunchie to wash instead of soap. Use a gentle moisturizing kind.

The key to eczema is moisture, moisture. Use regular Dove soap so it doesnt take away the natural oils in the skin, no playing in the bath just wash and get her out water will dry skin more and grease her up like a little grease ball, the cheapest is plain vaseline no scents no baby fresh regular old petroletum from the dollar store every night, morning, and afternoon. I worked for a Dermatologist for years and everyone in America has had eczema at one time or another! Good Luck!!

The only thing that will help eczema is cortizone. I don't know if 1% is enough that you can get over the counter but it will help. It takes a long time to heal.

My daughter had eczema all over her body and we tried everything the doctor gave us to help it. Unfortunately, nothing helped. A couple of years later she outgrew it and she has no scars. The only thing I can think of is it wasn't eczema, but an allergy. We had switched laundry detergents after a couple of years and that was when I noticed it disappearing. I kept thinking it was eczema and had I known it was an allergy, I would have been more vigilant at finding the cause.

I like olive iol after a bath or shower. Add 10 drops of lavendar to about 1/2 cup in a swueezable bottle, rub on after bath while your little one is still in the tub. PAT dry! Don't rub. Olive oil has vitamins, and the lavendar is very soothing (smells nice, too).

My daughter has terrible eczema and I have found that the trick to stopping a flare up is to apply SpectroKids Eczema care to the wet skin, right out of the bath, and then apply a barrier cream, like Prevex right on top. Another good thing is to use Oilatum dermatological bath oil in the bath, and let her soak only for about 5 minutes in warm water and then apply the creams as mentioned.
I am not sure how old your child is, but another recommendation from my naturopath (which works wonders) is to give your child a teaspoon of fish oil, like Ascenta Nutra Sea Omega 3 EFAs, once a day. If your child is a still an infant and you are nursing, you can take the fish oil and your baby will benefit. I am nursing my 5 month old son and take the fish oil supplement and he does not have any eczema at all...where my daughter was covered head to toe with it from her second month on.

The other thing i forgot to say was that the clinic sisters advised that the reason they believed that she got eczema was from using supermarket products on her skin under 6 months. They sugested just olive oil in her bath until we got it under control and the dream cream went from there

my little one has bad eczema. any ideas on how to help it? and has anyone tried exederm?
My little one had really bad eczema and after trying everything from the chemist and otherwise stumbled across "Lush" (not sure that the shop is everywhere), and tried the Dream Cream and have not had a reoccurrance in about 18 months. Can't say it will work for all children but worked a dream for her.

Eczema can be an allergic reaction to gluten. I never had it bad, but going gluten free has been my path. Also to clear it up before that, I used 5 drops of tea tree oil in a tea spoon of plain sorbiline cream. Took it away in 2 days. The youngest age to use tea tree is 2 however.

Most people that have allergies suffer from eczema. I found this out after taking my child to an allergy specialist. My son is 6 years old and we have battled eczema since birth, but since he has started his allergy medicine in conjunction with some really good lotions he has been free and clear of the eczema. We use lotion that I buy from a BeautiControl consultant, it is called extreme hand repair. It is actually the only thing that has worked for him even over all the presciption creams. The only down fall to this cream is that it is full of alpha hydroxy which heals the skin but makes it more sensitve to sun light so sun screen is a must. Hope this helps you out.

My daughter has severe exzema I use all unscented soaps aveeno is the best. And for her hair suave just also came out with unscented shampoo. I only use aquaphor ointment as a lotion. I have seen her go to bed very broken out and in the morning it is gone. Only use a tablespoon of soap in the wash. I also give my daughter zyrtec daily because exzema is caused by allergys. Also taking her out in the sun in the morning helps alot. My hubby has really bad exzema and he says the sun helps the best. If it gets really bad take her to a dermatolgist and get an allergy test. We found out that dogs and peanuts make her break out more. Good Luck!

Gurl, my older child has eczema bad also. I take him to this pedatrician and she gives my child a steroid shot for his eczema and it helps out alot. It clears up but eventually it gonna come back, but it stay clear for awhile and she also gives him some cream and some grease for it and it helps. Don't let your be in the sun alot and make sure he don't play's in the dirt. Try to see if you can get a shot for that.

my child's doctor prescribed a steroid ointment before but i asked him to changed o a lower percentage lotion which is triamcinolone 1%. when i put it one him, i always mix it with his lotion so that it's not very concentrated. i also only use it when his eczema is a lot or itchy and visible. on regular days, i just make sure to put lotion on him aas often as possible. i dont stay in one kind of lotion, i uses different lotion every now and then. but compatible to his skin type is aveno and now lubriderm. just the mild type. i have tried baby eczema cream also by Gentle naturals and mix it with his lotion. it works.

eczema is not something you can treat topically. It comes from within. Your baby may be having an allergy response. I would seek a naturopathic doctor and he will explain more. Also, there is a book, that is my bible...called, Smart Medicine for a Healthier child. All moms should have this book. It will give you all the different ways in which you can look at issues with your children. It will offer the conventional, the natural ways and the homeopathic. I highly recommend it! It will show you how to deal with the eczema and also with the allergies. Trust me...ive done it with amazing results!
Wow this is a big help...good to know! Wonder why the doctors don't tell you that it comes from within??? I am willing to try anything at this point with my 5 year old cuz like I said in my earlier post, he is just miserable with it....Thanks!
