My month old daughter has stomach problems, I'm on a 'bland diet', how else can I help her?

I've given her Mylicon after every feeding, most of the time she is okay but sometimes she has so much gas that she just cries and cries. How else can I help her to eliminate the gas pains??

if you are breastfeeding try not eating no dairy none what so ever for a few days and see if it gets better one of the nurses i work with did this and her baby stomach problems went away and she lost all her weight.

Dont eat any products from cow milk. Babies have a hard time digesting the protein from cow milk. Goat milk is generally fine. Also, try rasberry leaf tea or the pills. Good luck

my son had the same problems, and the bowel specialist told me to give him 5mls of yakult every day and i was to finish the rest as i was breast feeding that work and it has work for several of my friends littlens too when they suffered with really bad colic, i never used yakult as i didnt like it but i used actimel instead but anything like that as long as it is prebiotic and probiotic at the same time

I haven't read all of the replies that you have had so far but if your baby is cholicy, try laying on your back to feed. this takes some doing but it makes baby suck to feed, if you have a good milk supply your baby can gulp trying to keep up with the flow, feeding on your back slows the flow down. also try not to let baby get to hungry before she feeds. this can also cause her to gulp.

My son had bad cholic and this helped, he was also suffering from reflux, which can mimic the symptoms of cholic. I saw a doctor who has been in practice for about sixty years and he said that if is was very bad to give him .1 of a mil per kilo of weight of mylanta.

There were nights when he would just scream and scream and scream. I discovered that If I put him in the shower with me the drumming of the water on his back and on his belly soothed him a lot. I ran the shower at the temp that I would normally have it because I found that if the water was cooler he got fussy.

I don't know if that helps but I hope so

regards Kylie

Oh I forgot to say that after 2 and a half to three months most babies outgrow this. sounds like forever when you are living it but looking back it goes so fast

my four month old also had gas issues for a while. It was suggested to me to bend her knees and push them toward her chest, alternating mild pushing, and right circle motions. The pressure against her belly relieves built up gas and sometimes she even lets a few go at the time. I try to do this a few times a day. This has greatly improved the end of the day build up of gas. If you wait until the gas pains are happening it's too late.

Are you breast feeding? i wasn't able to to so my children feed off the bottle, my daughter and one of my granddaughters had stomach problems and had to be put on soy milk or formula. i am sure the doctor has tested to see if she is alergic to your ilk. or some part of your milk. if not you may start there. it may also have nothing to do with your milk but a problem with her stomach and digestive tarck, i had that problem as a baby. talk toyour baby's doctor.

Both of my kids have soy instead of whole milk. My 3 year old son had to have soy formula and now drinks Soy Silk milk. My 9 month old daughter was having stomachissues at about a month old and we switched her to soy formula and it worked. No more gassy fussy baby. Try soy and see if that helps.

My mother-in-law used to boil caraway seed, strain it and put in a bottle.(might have to add a little sugar) I used to think she was nuts but by my third child I was making it myself. It soothes the gi tract with NO side affects.

My daughter had bad colic.

I would sleep her on her stomach - this would help so much as the pressure on her stomach help her with the wind.

i would also bounce on a fit ball, this would help bring up wind.

I would also use Infacol.

a nice warm bath at the worse times... for us this was at 5-m - 6pm

One of my girlfriend ended up putting her daughter onto formula and that helped straight away... but this wasnt for me and may not be the answer for you either.

But i aslo found that after 2.5 months she just got better... Sometimes time is the only cure..

Hope that you find something that works for you... hold in there it will get better

Are you nursing? If so, a diet of whole grains, vegetables, fresh fruit, no sugar, no dairy, some good quality meat, esp. chicken and fish would be best for you. Oh, and did I say NO SUGAR? Someone here recommended soy, but I have seen studies that link soy formula to peanut allergies in children. And many friends of mine find that it causes gas.
Also: Cows milk is made for baby cows. Not humans!

My son's stomach would get so bloated and tight. He would cry and scream in pain. Found out his stomach wasn't completely developed. I was breastfeading and ended up having to stop and put him on formula...which took forever to find the right one for him. Had to take him off milk and juice. Juice was also causing his stomach to react. My son couldn't drink juice or milk until he was two and even then he couldn't have too much or it would again cause him stomach pains. I used to hold him in the shower to help his tummy plus giving him gas medicines. Putting him in a bath just made him more uncomfortable.

when my son was about 6 months old. he was havin alot of stomach problems. his dr.changed his milk about 6 times and it just seem like nothing else worked including that mylocon. he finally sent my son to get tested for acid reflux( i think thats how you spell that) and thats what it was. i thought only old people got that...he had to be put on some prevacide that dissolved when you put it in your mouth. not saying thats whats wrong, but dont rule it out.

oh i just wanted to add with the C HOLD, make sure you walk around a bit with them and keep them in the position (as long as she isnt distrssed) but with my son, it was his favourite way to be held. Your daughter might like it too. Oh and onther thing, i would wear the baby harness around the home, while i was doing the cleaning. Sometimes just being upright can help them, and they are close to you too, so that soothes them. ANd one more thing, WHen you put bubs on the breast make sure she is latching on properly and not swallowing too much air. And make sure your milk supply is up too. My milk supply started to diminish after only 8 weeks (due to PND) and he was basically sucking on nothing, which led to him being hungry which led to him crying resulting in a lot of air being swallowed and thensort tummy. There are so many things that could be going on here, im just trying to let yo know all the stuff i did coz it can be very distressing for you and bubs! Good luck!

My son who is now 2 had terrible colic and reflux as a babie, i even took him to the hspital one night because i couldnt stand the screaming. If you are breastfeeding, be midful of what you eat. Chocolate, caffeine, too much acidic fruits like oranges, apples. etc, leafy greens like cabbahe, spicnach, they can all upset a small tum tum. If you are not breast feeding, try changing formula. Perhaps even speak with your health care nurse about this. Warm baths, and rubbing the small of the back and tummy helpo. Lay bubs down on the floor and push legs to chest. One of the best things i learned was the C HOLD. This is where you are either standing or sitting, and bubs back is agains your chest/stomach. Support bubs around the chest so as not to fall, and then with your other hand put under knees so bubs bottom is just hanging but still safe. In this position the legs are drawn and bubs is still up right so she can either pass the gas or bring it up.

I wish you luck, i really do, its horrible when your babies cry and are in pain and you can fix them. Just know your doing a great job, and colic will generally resolve itself. I found with my son, that i had roughly 2 -3 months of it but the reflux stayed till he was about 9 months.

If none of these help, go see your Doc!! GOod Luck xxx

Another mother that had a baby with milk protien "allergy". Have you seen the dr? I recommend a GI specialist. We went because DS was 8 weeks premie and I found blood in his stool. (Sorry if TMI) that's how his intolerance was discovered. They tried just having me cut all dairy (including casein) out of my diet, but it was taking too long to show a result. We went with Nutrimigen. This was 5 years ago and it was $20 a can, but my insurance covered it so that my be an option for you.

His twin sister had a gas issue, but no other digestive probems. Gripe Water from Baby Bliss worked wonders for her. She loved it too. She would suck it out of the dropper. She did better on her tummy, but I could never let her sleep like that, I was way too nervous. If she was really fussy I'd let her lie on her tummy, rub her lower back and then turn her over once she was asleep. Pumping her legs like she was running would help move the gas though her system too.

Hope she feels better soon. I know it feels live forever at this point, but it will be over before you know it.

Hi Ivana,

I see so many posts here. Some sound good, but some a bit concerning. If this were my daughter, I'd start by contacting my pediatrician just to rule out a medical issues. I found when my son was the same age that he was very fussy for no reason, or so I thought. I contacted my local La Leche League and they were a big help. They helped with my son's nursing latch, but they also helped me to go on an elimination diet. He ended up having a soy intolerance. Soy, Dairy and wheat can be very common problems. The good news is, he's 13 months old now, still nursing, and I can eat soy again with no problems. You need to do what feels right for you, but I'd stay away from formulas as some recommended here if you're already having potental food sensitivities.

Give her the Mylicon after her feeding and if she still has pains lay her down on her tummy as this will make her pop off.She may be sick a few times first but she will get used to it and start popping away. That was the only way l could settle my son he was very bad. Hope this helps good luck!!

The main cause of gassiness in a breastfed infant is a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. This is when baby is getting too much foremilk (and thus too much lactose) in too short a time. The best way to rectify this is to block feed. You would nurse baby off of one breast for however many feedings it takes for you to no longer be able to easily squeeze milk out of that breast. Then you would switch to the other and do the same. This will regulate your supply, and make sure she gets a lot of the fatty hindmilk rather than too much foremilk.

A couple of things to consider: regarding the suggestion of lactose intolerance- it is a very rare thing for an infant to be congenitally 'lactose intolerant.' If this was the case, your daughter would actually have galactosemia, and you would notice a failure to thrive. Human milk has the highest percentage of lactose of any mammal- so for an infant to not be able to digest lactose- rare indeed. 'Lactose intolerance' is actually a normally occuring condition, which typically begins at around age six for most of the human population, and progresses as the person ages.

Concerning your diet- the idea that certain foods cause gassiness in a baby is a myth. Vegetables can cause gas in you because of the nature of the way the foods break down in your gut from bacteria. But those components of the food that cause the gas in you do not go to your blood, and do not go to your milk.

Spicey foods, garlicky foods- there are plenty of cultures the world round that regularly consume these types of foods in large proportions of their diet- and they experience no more 'gassy' babies than cultures that eat a blander diet.

Other causes of gassiness in baby- an bad latch, crying, and last but not least- a simple, typical, immature infant gut that needs to work itself out. That's normal.

Gripe waters &c. - marketing. That's all.

#1 Warm teas (take a slice of a mac apple and boil the water and strain. use the apple water, you can give her the warm water 1 oz or so.) Also Manzanilla (chamomile tea) ****The tea is not a replacement for a feeding.**** #2 Massages rub the feet and the tummy and hands very softly often, and #3 Soy milk. I used to breastfeed and then I was with fever then I used Enfamil Soy. It was the one that helped out best. #4 When she sleeps don't have her lay flat have her lifted with a wedge. And lay her a bit slanted for the first 15 min on her right side so the food can digest fully and then change her to the left. I had reflux and BM problems with my first son. I was living in Bogota, Colombia when my sons were born so I learned a lot. And I must say everything I learned there worked well for us. I went the natural instead of using Mylicon. Mylicon is not bad, it sometimes works but it wasn't my main choice. The teas will work but try to only use it 2-3 times a day. You will have to choose methods that you think would work for you, but you have to at least give the methods 4 days to see some change in her. I hope what everyone wrote gives you a positive outlook. and I hope she feels better soon.

Make a doctor appointment for two weeks out. Keep a diary of everything you eat and drink, even if it is one bite from a candy bar, or one lick of ice cream, a sip of pop, a beer, everything! along with the date and time, and be honest, if you are not honest it won't help. And keep track of how long you spend burping after feeding, tummy time, when the baby has pain, date and time and how long. And take your diary in with you to the appointment. It will greatly help you and your doctor figure out what is going on. And hang in there, this too shall pass. and if you need a break (and you might) call a friend or relative to give you one.

I had this problem with my 2nd baby when she was very young, she would go stiff and just scream, nothing I did helped except for laying her on her belly across my arm, but the minute I moved her she would start again. Nothing I tried helped, I ended up accepting that it was just 'colic' and that I would just have to wait for her to grow out of it. It was horrible, stressful and very upsetting. She did seem to grow out of it, but then recently I noticed that her poos always seemed to be runny and very smelly, to cut the story short we ended up having her tested for lactose intolerance (it is a series of breath tests) and it came back positive. I put her on a formula (S26 I think) for lactose intolerant babies, you can also get Soy formula and her poos have firmed up. She is 11 months old, we only just found out, but I look back & think that is probably what her problem was as a baby. I also stopped giving her cheese, baby yoghurt, baby custards and use soy or rice milk in her baby cereal/ cooking etc.

It is SOOOOO much better that mylicon at relieving gas because it works on gas in their intestines not just gas in their bellies! I ordered an all natural charcoal based version for my baby, but I'm pretty sure it's readily available in most grocery & drug stores now!
Good luck....those were tough times!

Hi - my daughter was the same...ended up being a milk protein allergy..so i had to cut all dairy out of my diet. Alot of children who have a dairy allergy also have a soy allergy too. So mayb u should stop drinking soy as well as cutting out all dairy from your diet and see if she improves. I also used Brauer drops for colic...when I used the correct amount it seemed to help her. And as others have said lots of stomach time on your lap and rubbin her back to help. I also use a probiotic powder daily which i mix into her food, which helps strengthen her gut...though my baby was 6 months when i started givin it 2 her. The bottle however does say it can be used from birth. Anyways just a few ideas there for u...good luck!

Hi Ivana
I nursed boy my boys and when they would get gas is because I eat something and it came out in my milk. I could not eat broccoli ,cabbage or onions. I see you are drinking soya milk maybe try cutting it out for abit see if that helps. I used this site it is really good for food you should eat. I eat oatmeal every morning when you are nursing also enjoy a nice up of tea it is also very good for you. Of course caffeine tea.Putting a warm towel on her tummy. I also would rub my child's back by holding her in a foot ball hold which is placing her head at the top of your arm and body along your arm so feet are hanging. Rub her back in a circular motion. You can also place her on the floor and gentle push her legs into her tummy not too hard just gentle this should release the some of the gas. Warm bath should also calm her. If you have tired all these things take her to the doctor. I wouldn't recommend any medication not know her age or medical health.

Here is the site to help make your breast milk better for her.

I hope I helped a little bit.

Does it hurt when you feed, you may have attachment problems as Baby can suck in alot of air if she is not attatching properly. Also try feeding her so she is upright as this can help too. My first had cronic reflux, the doctors had her on $60 worth of medication per week, I finally saw a great ped. who sent us to the Riverton Centre (they are the babies helpline number in your Baby book). They explained to me that I had not learnt to settle her to sleep ect properly and all her stomach probs were due to being unsettled(not enough sleep, too much stimulation) as these things cause baby to tense muscles and hence cause gas ect. So maybe you could look into that too, may help, good luck I know it's so hard to watch your little one in pain!
