My six week old has had a dry cough with no other symptoms. I've only noticed it yesterday and seems like it's gone today. Has anyone else's little one had this and is it normal? She has been going through her growth spurt and having a lot of straining before pooping but the color is normal. Wet diaper count is good, too. Thanks in advance to everyone for your help!

Hi Brooke. My little girl is almost three months old already. When she was bout that age she had the dry cough. I took her to my ped immidiatly. He told me not to worry too much. See they still so little and all the dust and what ever else thats in the air gets to them and the only way they get rid of it is to sneeze and cough a little. I would suggest to just keep a little eye on her. if it carrys on a long time then take her to the ped. what also happens is that the milk you feeding her wether its breast or formula gets into their nasal pipes and gives a small nasal drip that could also be causing the cough. When my little girl was that age she had it on and off quite alot but it never got worse and it was on and off not consistend. So i wouldn`t worry too much. Just keep a close eye. Kind Regards Yolande

If you are feeling a lot of anxiety about your baby it is best to call the nurse line at your local hospital and get professional advice, it is free, open 24 hours a day and they are very helpful in telling you what is completely normal and what may be something risky...they will be able to calm your fears and tell you what to look for and when to bring your child in if they get worse in one way or other :) I can't tell you how many times I called the nurse line when I was nervous in the first weeks of my sons life

Hi Brooke. I agree with Shannon. The biggest thing with a cough is to watch the breathing. Good luck with everything!!

hi Brooke! Last winter when my son was around 6 months he had a really bad dry cough. We figured out it was due to our house being so dry cuz of the heat. so we put a humidifier in his room and it went away! No dry cough this winter so far :)

My five month old baby has got a dry cough that has lasted a few days now, took her to the doctor and the doctor said her lungs sounded good and unless she stats to have troble breathing or get a fever then it should just go away, well it hasn't and it seems to be worse when she is lying down or sleeping, any advice?

Hey Brooke- with my first baby, I would call the nurse's hotline for every little question or doubt I had. It never hurts to ask a professional. Never feel stupid! God gave you a gut instinct about your child and you should follow it, even if it turns out being nothing-- at least you'll learn in the process. : ) good luck!

I agree with shannon, watch her breathing and if she starts cough consistently again, it doesn't hurt to at least call the dr. and/or take her in.

Hi Brooke, I wouldn't worry about the stools. Infants usually make alot of noises and move around quite a bit before a bowel movement. If your baby is breastfed, they can go several days before even having a bowel movement. It can even take 14 days sometimes. I would watch the cough though. If it only happend a couple of times, and is completely better today, then she's probably fine. However, if you notice the cough again I'd watch to make sure she doesn't sound wheezy or look like she's having trouble breathing at times. I'm not trying to scare you or anything, but it is RSV season, and little babies can't handle having a common cold in the same way that we can. It's good that you're noticing wet diapers. That means she's not dehydrated, and she's eating okay. Good luck with everything!
