I try and bring my almost 20 month son out to play with other kids. Birthday partys, Parks,Play groups with my friends kids. But my son doesn't want to seem to play with other kids. He just goes off and does his own thing while the other kids play together. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Your son is very normal. It's only recently that my son has started to play with kids his age and he's 29 months. You'll notice that your son may start playing with children older than him first because they adapt to his kind of play. Kids his own age just want to do what they want to do.
It can lead to frustration. Don't worry about it for now. You'll soon see that he's running and playing with other kids.

Generally, kids don't start co-playing with children until about 2 1/2 or so. Does he side by side play? By that I mean, will be play CLOSE to other kids? With toys that other children are playing with? If he's doing that then he's well within his social means right now.

There is nothing unusual about that, and don't think that your child has autism because of it.I attend playgroup where there is a child pyscologist in attendance who has told us that children don't start playing with other kids until they reach 3 years of age.Until then they do play by themselves for the majortiy of the time.My son is 22 months and still plays by himself sometimes so don't worry it'll happen

if you are worried talk to your health visitor,if theres nothing wrong you can then relax, but if theres something to worry about he can access all that he needs to,my son is autistic and doing well but i think only because he accessd treatment at 18 months, good luck but dont panic he's maybe just a bit shy,xxx

Yes he will play close to other kids and watch the other kids play. but for the most part he just does his own thing. and if one of the kids has a toy he likes he will sit there watch the kid play with the toy and then when the child is done playing with it he will go over and grab it and play with it as well.

Our son was the same..we worried about it at first.Once he started nursery at the age of 3 he started to mix more with other kids but if im totally honest it is only in the last year ( he is now 6) that he has come out of his 'shell'.Personally I wouldnt worry about this as many children at a young age would rather play on their own.

i wouldnt b worried at all...my daughter is very shy and also doesnt mingle very well but its a learning thing..they learn to mingle!

My daughter is also nearly 20 months old and goes to daycare...she has finally made friends there but still goes off on her own a lot..and ALL the kids do it! they LOVE playing together but they also like to do things on their own....it takes time..
