I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet.....zincofax or penatin the same stuff for diaper rash. Worked quick and stayed on so we didn't need to reapply as often as other lotions.

My son is 7 now....has severe eczema! We changed everything! Use only detergents that are perfume and dye free. Dove sensitive skin body soap. As for a lotion we tried everything and I mean everything over the counter and perscriptions the only thing that has worked for him you can get at walmart or any other drug store over the counter...it is Gold Bond Ultimate soothing with chamomile, has been a life saver!! My sons skin literally felt and sounded like sandpaper and it hurt him to rub his back or legs I strongly suggest this product!

Don't use any cream with perfume or steroids in it that makes it worst. Use Aveeno for babies (light blue top) with oatmeal skin moisturizer. Its kind of expensive but very worth it and all you need is a little at a time to cure hours and days of scaling, itchy skin.

Good Luck,

My 8 yr old has eczema, and we use All free detergent, and downey free fabric softener. She takes 3 minute showers using lever 2000 soap, we cool down the water a little before she gets out, and dry off qickly. We use Eucerin or Aveeno lotion. Has really helped her! This was all under the direction of our family Dr.

Curel Itch Defense-it's safe for babies and has the National Eczema Association seal on it. I have eczema on my hands and I don't want to use anything that I can't use on the baby.

This version of Curel is new. I have used many other methods and lotions and this lotion has worked great. Doesn't burn, isn't too greasy feeling. Sometimes things made to stop itching can have the opposite effect if used too much. I can put this lotion on all day long and then get back to business and it's great. I have not woke up itching during the middle of the night since I started using this last month. I have used vaseline, Aveeno, cortisone, benadryl anti itch cream, and many other lotions and ointments. I had it under control until the last two weeks of my pregnancy. Probably because of the demands of the pg, I couldn't maintain the moisture in my skin, then the baby is born and I wash my hands all the time making the eczema worse. But I can't stop washing my hands, I was going to ask for a prescription during my next dr appt, but now I don't need one. You just really have to experiment to find out what works best.

My daughter has had it and when it is real bad, we give her oatmeal baths-or Aveno has a bath product that is similar. We also have noticed some foods that she is allergic to and now stay away from them- ie soy sauce and strawberries

My daughter has it to and i asked my doctor and he recommended baby aveeno lotion. Just make sure it has no dyes or fragrance in it.He also said to make sure she isn't getting a bath every night because that tends to dry out their skin. When then do have a bath to not use anything with a fragrance. He recommended Dove sensitive. Hope this helps.

My son has eczema so bad that over the counter medications did not work. they are very harsh and smell terrible. We found a great dermatologist that prescribed O-lux E and Protopic. These are the only things that cleared him up.

My son had severe eczema when he was little. Now his skin is so smooth, You have to dedicate lots of care to his skin and some patience, eczema is very tricky to deal with. Don't over bundle your child his skin will get sweaty and it will cause it to break out, everything has to be changed to hypo-allergenic. It would be best if he only wears 100% cotton avoid dark colors because of the dyes. I use the cetaphyl line of soaps, washes, and creams also oatmeal baths do the trick let him air dry as much as possible don't let his skin dry all the way before putting the cetaphil cream on him. I found out that putting a little bit of hydrocortisone ointment in the cream works great especially when he had a bad break out. he was about 6 when he was done with eczema he is now 12 and he still uses the cetaphil line. if the eczema is bad repeat the cream about 3 time a day. Good Luck

Jergans lotion for extra dry skin 2 to 3 times a day until it heals and once a day to keep it from coming back.

Also do not put bleach in your child's bath water! If it is weeping or oozing try a compress with water and alt on a washcloth to dry it out 2 times a day.

Hot water makes it act up so avoid hot baths when it is inflamed or toy see signs of it acting up. Also do not use anything to dry it out if it is not weeping/oozing, drying the skin out also makes it act up.

Hope this helps

There is a cream/lotion called Cetaphil that you can get at Wal-Mart that works well. Also, put 1/2 cup of bleach in a bath tub full of water 2 times a week for awhile, let him sit in it, then drain it and run a regular bath. It dries it right up!

We have had great success with EUCERIN CALMING CREAM. You can find it at any drug store..you don't have to worry about hydrocortozne or fragrence. Use it after the bath. I also noticed that we have taken all fragrences out, her laundry soap, her bath soap and it has help greatly. Luck to you.

I was recommended from owner of health food store that along with a topical treatment that it can be healed by ingesting fish oils. omega 3,6,9. You can get capsules or just straight fish oil. It does not taste fishy and it is usually flavored with lemon. You can start healing from the inside out. You could also use organic coconut oil as a topical treatment, it is great for your skin among other things and smells great too! I am pretty partial to natural healing and using natural products-chemical free. Good Luck to you.

Quoting ANGELICA: Maybe try Cetaphil or Dove Bar for sensitive skin?

Anyone have a suggestion for a 13yr old boy? He has it on his face and I have not been able to find anything he can clean his face with and not break out.

1) a definite allergist visit for food allergy testing
2) make sure you use only free/clear laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener for your childs clothing
3) a good moisturizer as listed above
4) in place of a steroid, I found (online) Calendula cream from CALIFORNIA BABY products..someone mentioned calendula above, but I LOVE this product for my dtr and myself as we both have eczema and food allergies.

My entire family suffers from Eczema some more severe than others, but Dove for sensitive skin works well. When getting out of shower or bath try not to rub the towel to dry pat the towel to dry and immediately, while his pores are still open rub him down in Walmart's brand Dry Skin Cream it is the cheaper version of Eucerin's Moisturizing Cream. This cream is thick, and I know most kids don't like it, but it works! If your looking for something a little thinner try Aveeno for Sensitive Skin. The key to trying to keep it under control is to stay away from items with fragrance, it is a HUGE irritant to Eczema suffers! Believe me, having Eczema can be costly until you find the right products for you. Good Luck :)

i suffer badly from eczema and have ever since i was a young child.
Cortizone cream is good for a quick fix but as its a steroid it thins the skin with frequent use, which can lead to more flare ups so dont use it all the time.
Avoid chemical based soaps and washes etc.. anything with petrochemicals, mineral oil, sulphates and parabens, or anything with Alcohol in it. Even though many of these are for 'sensitive skin' and 'eczema' these all contribute to making the skin worse.
Johnsons and Johnsons etc stuff is nasty.. if you are using that stop straight away!
Sometimes, but not all the times, diet is a contributing factor but also stress, heat etc have a big impact, its usually dependant on the person.

It depends on the severity of the eczema, for mild topical eczema which is what I have I use OILATUM cream and the bath oil. For more severe eczema you will need to be diagnosed properly with the correct tratment. I find my eczema flares up if I change washing powder. For my babies and young children i used Fairy soap powder and conditioner and had no problems with their skin or mine. I would avoid prolonged use of steroids such as hydrocortisone cos they do thin the skin with prolonged use.

Along with the cremes and ointment that others have suggested... I would recommend avoiding sugar. Sugar in your body can make eczema flare up and turn bright red. Also, look at your labels the soaps you use. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate both are very strong cleaners that are just there to make bubbles. Try to avoid them and especially check the label if you use a bubble bath. They are almost entirely made of these harmful products that are very harsh for kids skin. Especially if they soak in it for 20 min in the bath. We had some bubble bath that was made up of these products and I used it in the bath for the first time in a while to make bubbles for my kids the other night, and when my son got out of the tub he had a red rash on his legs and stomach where he had been sitting in the bath! I couldn't believe it happened so fast! It's gone now! Good luck!

My daughter is very sensitive, she is allergic to so many things so I am constantly checking everything that she eats. I tried Cetaphil, CeraVe, everything you can think of. I changed her laudry detergent to the Shaklee brand detergent and I used the Aveeno Oatmeal baby wash and shampoo. I put the baby wash in the bath so that she soaks in it and then I was her body with it. I also use the Aveeno shampoo. Then I lather her in baby oil lotion made by Shaklee so it doesn't have any scents or allergic ingredients. I let her air dry with the lotion and then I add the Aveeno Oatmeal lotion. When she does have breaks outs I put her in the tub with the oatmeal wash and once i'm done, I add the hydrocortisone cream and continue like I normally do. She is so sensitive I had to buy her the Aveeno Sun Protection as well any other brand and she breaks out. good Luck keep trying things until you find what works for him. I know they sell cetaphil and CeraVe at Costco and some Aveeno products.

I have read most of your replies. This is a process that dosen't have to be too expensive and it works. First change your laundry detergent to some with "free" on in like all free. Then bath your child in cetaphil or lie soap (old school). Then after bathing use vasline (petroluem jelly) hydrocodisone cream mix it together and really concentrate on the worse areas. Be faithful at doing this. I'm a grandmother of 5 ad one of my three as well as grandchild (2) had this problem. Good Luck !

My son Mathew was born with eczema, and so is his father. There are various ways to handle it, but not really treat it. Eczema is an allergy, so therefor you got try and regulate or minimise the exposure to what he is allergic to. And No!, not all eczema patients are allergiced to the same thing. We found that when we stopped smoking in the house, we saw changes immediately, we also manage his diet a little better, 100ml of milk a day only, plus a good daily vacuum of the house and beds. Good luck i know this can be traumatic.

Aveeno works well - as does Dove and Ivory. But it's also best to not use the bar soaps, always liquid. Bar soaps tend to dry you skin more and leave a film.

Lavigne Organics produces a Mayan Magic creme that contains the all natural products Tepezcohuite and Shea Butter. If you're concerned about the chemicals in most of the cremes, especially hydrocordizone, and what it will do to your baby's skin and organs over time, you should take a look at this. It is excellent!
