My son will be 3 in July - should we move him to a big boy bed?

My son is still in his crib. He has climbed into it several times, but has never climbed out and even attempted to. When he wakes up in the morning, he will take off the sheet and throw everything out (sheet, blanket(s), stuffed animal) and just sit or lay in the empty crib, talking to himself.

Other parents with kids (even boys) a few months younger have already switched to a big boy bed. Lots of resulted in unwanted destruction of bedroom or bathroom, since child can open up his door and wonder out. A few other parents are surprised that he is still content in the crib for both nap time and bed time.

Should we just let him stay in his crib how ever long he wants? Is there an age that we should be concerned? All thoughtful responses will be greatly appreciated!

He's been sleeping in his own room since he was a few months old. He was in a bassinet (sp?) in our room when he was born. When he started sleeping longer through the night, with fewer wake-ups and started to get a little too big for the bassinet, we moved him to his crib in his room. He's been there for naps and bedtime ever since.

we put our 1 yr old into her own bedroom, she was ready for the bed since she always wanted in with me lol.. wat we did with the door thing was put her safety gate there so den she couldnt get out and fall down the stairs.. if he still sleeps in ur room in the crib but has his own room to move into why dont u try putting the crib into there and just go from there

My kids now 5yrs and 2 yrs moved at 16 and 14 months and we have NEVER had their rooms or house torn up from them. They both sleep in their own beds in their own rooms and since they do not have toys in their rooms there is not much to do besides sleep. Just put the toddler proof doorknobs on important doors.

If he is happy and hasnt outgrown the crib then there is no rush to move him I dont think. My daughter is 2.5 and is still in her cot, same thing has never tried to climb in or out. We are moving her to a big bed this month but that is only because I am pregnant again and dont want to wait til the baby is here to move her, I want it to be done with so she doesnt feel the baby is taking it away from her. But with moving her to the bed we will have to key lock every door in our house as she can open all the doors including the front one. I think as long as its working then leave it be.

If he is content in his crib, leave him there. It hurts no one and why force it. He is obviously content and it most likely is a sense of security for him. My 3 oldest stayed in their cribs till they were almost 3. They are now 15, 13 and 5 and are quite normal and all in twin beds now. I imagine my newborn will be the same.

I'd put him in a big boy bed. Get a door child lock (doorknob cover) to keep him in his room at night. We do this with our 3 1/2 year old for safety reasons, we just put it on the inside of his door.
