Hello everybody,

I am new to this group. I was wondering what you all think of the name Anika? It is so hard to come up with a unique girls name that is not overused. My oldest is Geraldine and second oldest is Kimberly. Anika means sweet face. I love the name but worried if people will have a hard time pronouncing it or thinking its too weird of a name. (Ann nee kah or aun nee kah).

Thanks. Tamara

Best wishes Tamara and I bet you'll take one look at that beautiful baby's face and you'll just know who she is and my guess with that "sweet-face" that you'll fall immediately in love with that she'll likely be an "Anika!" I'm sure you had that same feel with the first 2. Make sure to get back to us all when you're up to it :-)

I love the name Anika it was actually one of the 2 finalists for my daughter. When she was born though she looked more like a Riley to us.

My best friend's daughter (who is now 11) is named Annaca, she occassionally gets called Anna but mostly is called by her full name because of it's uniqueness. It's different yet so pretty, nothing wrong with being unique--individualizes a child and creates a strong personality. And besides it means "sweet-faced", how nice is that? Besides, you and your husband are the only ones that matter in naming the baby and loving the name---Best Wishes!

I love the name.  I wanted to name our daughter something like India and my husband said no way.  Then I thought of naming her after a couple of friends.  But I didn't want to do that.  I have a friend who's name is Vashti and I love it.  My daughter ended up being Marissa Jade.

I agree, you need to pick a name that works for you and your husband.  People can mispronouce almost any part of a name these days.  It is all good and you get used to it.  For me, it has always been the last name that gets them - it is worse now that i hypened it.

OMG, I love that name! We are considering that name for our's if it's a girl (I'm due in September), along with Leah and Emily. Our Daughter is Megan Elizabeth, not sure what middle name would go with Anika though. If it's a boy, which I have a very strong feeling it is, he will be called Edward Alexander. I was worried Edward might be too formal for a child, but my husband and I both love it.

I really like Anika for a name. Some people we knew in another state named their daughter Annika or Anneka, one of those spellings, and it was after the mother's grandmother. They were not sure of the spelling, so made up their own version.

I have found, after having 4 kids, that picking a name is a very personal decision and you will get 20 different opinions about the same name. :) Some people have a connection with a certain name to someone from their past be it positive or negative. I think Anika (proun. au-ni-ka) is pretty...but she will prob. have a lifetime of mispronunciation. This coming from someone named Jacinda. :) LOL I have learned to deal with it and have been called everything from Jessic to Juacinta. We have picked most of our names from a baby book...oftensitting at Borders having coffee on a date night (yes, we still have date nights after 4 kids...very important!). Good luck...I'm sure a name will just hit you as fitting for this baby.

I actually considered that name for my youngest child (couldn't get my hubby to agree though). I think it is a beautiful name, and definately not hard to pronounce.

My 5-month-old daughter's name is Annika (means "gracious" in Swedish - I've seen a few different meanings.

We pronounce it AH-ni-kuh. But people very often call her ANN-i-kuh. As long as you can handle that, go for it! :-)

We have had all kinds of compliments on the name - people love that it's different without being wacky!

I love it! My daughters name is Azara so I know what you mean about people thinking it's weird, but who cares what anyone else thinks. If you and your husband like it then do it.

Welcome Tamara! You name her what you want to! Do not worry what other people will think. I like the old time names. Grace, Olivia, Ashley, Amanda, of course our daughter's name is Amanda Grace,so that is why I used those names. What does you husband think of Anika? Remember to include his opinion too.

Thanks for you input. I agree with you. My husband thinks it is a very interesting name but strange in a way. He likes it better than any other name so far. I like the names you have chosen too. Pretty. Thanks.

Hi Tamara-Anika is such a pretty and unique name!!! One of my previous co-workers naqme was also the same but hers was spelled with two NN's(Annika). She was from Sweden hence you will likely not come across that name very often, if any at all!!!

: )   Heather

Ps her name is pronounced ann-i kuh....
